Aldon Smith
Is anyone else not impressed with him?
I watched him pretty closely as i imagine a lot of you did. He took a lot of plays of when rushing the passer and playing the run. He did not look very good against the run and he looked pretty lost when dropping into coverage. That is what I saw. He did bring it a few times int he first quarter but his effort was nothing like we see with Miller or Watt. |
The guy is a one trick pony. Everyone knows that. His one trick is very nice though.

Watt had three sacks and three TFL today, on the other hand... |
I thought I heard Justin Smith was out of the game.
Focus shifted to Aldon Smith and he was shut down. |

Smith is a " one trick pony " but he's a 3-4 pass rusher. I dont expect too much from him in the coverage game. If Aldon doesnt break Strahans record, Miller should win defensive player of the year, because of his all around impact on the defense. On top of that, Miller has been improving in the pass defense area too
|
Aldon isnt gonna break the sack record without Justin Smith
|
Watt on the other hand gets to feast on Ponder and Luck again.
Hope Miller could somehow amazingly pull off 7 sacks against Weeden and Quinn |

It looked to me like he gave up on a lot of plays. The effort wasn't there 100% of the time. |

As for Aldon Smith, he is not just a one trick Pony. Guy had a really nice pick versus Brady after he read a screen pass last night. He was chipping the slot receivers and then rushing as well some plays. He is not as polished as Watt or Von at this point but he is also younger than both of them and he is getting better. I would LOVE to have that guy on my defense, its just that he is not as consistent at dominating play as either Watt or Miller at this point.
To call him a one trick pony though, would be a gross mis-representation of his skills. |
Von is a much more efficient pass rusher than Smith according to Pro Football Focus. It's really not even close.
Line up Von next to Justin Smith, Willis and Bowman and he probably has the sack record already. And that's no disrespect to Woodyard, Bannan, Wolfe, etc. but we're talking about three of the best players in the league. |
not really sure why you wouldn't be impressed. it was well known before the draft and last year that he is a pass rush specialist and that what they really want from him.
he's a John Abraham type of rusher. he's not going to be stout against the run, he's not going to be a coverage LB, he's going to come off the edge and get to the QB. Von and Watt are definitely more complete players but 19.5 sacks is 19.5 sacks regardless of if you can play the run well or not. |
