No Red Tape'? New Jersey Turns Away Non-union Relief Crews

How desperate is hurricane-ravaged New Jersey? Not desperate enough to suspend a union monopoly that keeps the state in the bottom ten states for economic competitiveness (and #48 for business friendliness). Relief crews from Alabama who were specifically called to New Jersey found themselves diverted to Long Island, NY after they arrived because they use non-union labor. Alabama is a right-to-work state.
WAFF-TV of Hunstville, AL reports:

Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees....

Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told "thanks, but no thanks."

With so much at stake--and lives still in danger--it would seem logical to tell special interests to step aside.

On Wednesday, while visiting cleanup efforts in New Jersey in the company of Gov. Chris Christie, President Barack Obama vowed: "We are not going to tolerate red tape, we are not going to tolerate bureaucracy."

Unless, of course, that red tape is enforced by Obama's union cronies. Then stranded residents have to wait.

The International Association of Fire Fighters' ads supporting President Barack Obama, like the one at the link, came out earlier in October.

But Hurricane Sandy is a strong reminder of the importance of their message, and IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger drives it home:

Rumor About Non-Union Utility Workers from Alabama Being Denied Access to NY/NJ Work Areas DEBUNKED...by Alabama Utility Workers

houghtam 11-02-2012 09:44 AM

LOL nice find. I was going to debunk this just by pointing out how these things work (my brother works for the power company, and has served in several different states in situations like this). But the article sums it up a lot better:

Quote:

"We were not turned away," he said. "It's a lot more complicated than that. One of the problems is whenever this kind of thing happens people call and ask, 'Are you going to send crews out?' but it's not a situation where everybody jumps in truck and heads up there. You have to work through trade associations. You have mutual-aid agreements and you've got to find a system that needs you and is able to take you."

He said some systems don't use the same voltage and may have different configurations. "You don't just go up there and say, 'Hey, we're here. We're going to start putting up poles for you."
Has nothing to do with unions, it's just partisans (like you, Dan) trying to find problems with something Obama has done.

Gotta slow down Dan. Think before you post. Once you post it, you own it. If it's a bs story, either admit you were wrong or let the thread die.

Prime example. I have no idea what you're trying to say.

Pony Boy 11-02-2012 02:04 PM

In Joplin MO where the whole town was wiped off the map by a tornado, people showed up by the thousands with pickup trucks and chain saws, some charge a modest fee but most helped for free.

The governor didn't ask if they were union members and didn't even require them to have a business permit to work in the devastated area.

Actually, if you just stop posting all together, it would make the board better for all. Phonics isn't your friend obviously and us reading Dan-ics is nearly impossible.

DAN_BRONCO_FAN 11-02-2012 02:34 PM

Then delete the thread. Don't make excuses about it. I saw it on Yahoo but didn't click. I am sure there are some truth to it but best to find it first but delete this thing.

Its almost like with internet, we never will know what is true. You can't trust sources anymore. Even the big metworks been caught lying, doctoring pictures to fool us, etc etc.

Not pointing at anyone side i am saying neither liberals, or conservatives, have a media outlet that is non-partisan. Journalism and reporting is a quagmire of crappola nowdays. I believe this story is false. Why? because its too soon for people be organized enough to turn away non union workers. Just my opinion this is a union/non union propaganda BS story or maybe a small handfull were turned away and its been blown out of porportion.

Who cares anyways the fact is this hurricane sucks for the whol country. We just can't seem to catch a break. Here is to us having better luck regardless of who wins the election. Just 4 yrs with no big terrorist attacks and no big disasters would be a huge help to the economy.

Even though I don't agree with you very often, I don't think you should stop posting. Just try to make it a point to organize your thoughts. Capitalize the first letter of your sentence, put a period at the end of that sentence. Try to craft your sentences with one thought at a time. I know some people can't get the hang of it and it doesn't mean you're stupid.

But like ant1999e stated, just organize your thoughts. You don't have to be perfect either. But trying to do this will make you look more credible.
