OT: Norway killer gets only 21yr sentence for 77 person massacre

WOW...remind me never to travel to norway...unless i wanna kill a bunch of people and do little or no time...the guy is eligible for parole after 10yrs.

Miss I. 08-24-2012 03:53 AM

The sentence could be extended, potentially indefinitely, in the future if he is considered still to pose a threat to society. Norway does not have the death penalty.
Per the article.

Just different set of rules. They don't in general encounter this kind of thing much. I've been there many times and always felt safe. The max penalty is what they gave him. Had they agreed he was insane he'd get less time and only go to a hospitAl. I agree he should be locked up longer but that is unfortunately the law. Still if the time comes maybe they will just keep extending him if they still consider him a threat thereby effectively being a life sentence anyway.

yeah it just goes to show that living within the constructs of the law can be just as ridiculous as not doing so

You're joking right? Norway's muder rate per 100,000 people is .6. The U.S. Murder rate per 100,000 people is seven times higher than that.

Go stock up your guns fellas we gonna kill some people and drink some beer.

He would've probably been acquitted in the US, so 10 years is still better than nothing.

So cynical bean. He'd be dead In the US. He not only shot up the island he bombed a government building. In all likelihood he'd have gone the way our previous domestic terrorists went in Oklahoma city and either be executed or in prison but I think he'd have been executed like Mcveigh

BroncoInferno 08-24-2012 05:44 AM

21 years is the max under Norwegian law. This was known from the beginning. I think they can it extend it, though, if they deem he is still a danger to society.

End thread

They can keep extending in 5y increments (I believe) with continued assessments. They do try to rehabilitate their inmates so, conceivably, he could be back on the streets in 40+ years if they feel as though he's no longer a threat to society.

But we'll all be dead anyway because of the Mayan prediction so it's just whatever, you know?

Yup, they can keep extending it - most likely they will if they deem him to have improved they will allow him out during some days but monitor him to see what happens and then go from there.

What a bunch of ****ing pussies...

I've done quite a bit of business in Norway. To be honest, they get a LOT Of things right. They don't throw their citizens in jail with the frequency or the glee that we seem to, for one.

They're a tremendously optimistic and rather happy people. Except for the weather, I'm consistently impressed (and a bit jealous) of what they've done.

pricejj 08-24-2012 07:27 AM

Europe is wack.

I suppose saying 4.2 murders per 100,000 people is not as impressive as saying 7 times .6 is.

Of course the USA is horribly violent. So what if Mexico (22.7 per 100k) or Brazil (21.0 per 100k) or Columbia (33.4 per 100k) are far worse?

Yay stereotypes...

You're comparing the US to countries with serious problems with the rule of law.

Norway's an amazing place by the way and a much less aggressive society, which makes what happened all the more shocking.

Jason in LA 08-24-2012 08:20 AM

One thing I find interesting. Punishment in the US is much harsher than Norway. Maybe because this country is much more violent. So maybe we shouldn't be ragging on them when we have a much greater problem. (That in no way means that I feel that 21 years is a good sentence. I hope they continue to extend his punishment until it really is life in prison.)

Rohirrim 08-24-2012 09:21 AM

They just don't know how to ensure public safety in Europe. Hell, we lock people up for life for three burglaries. We lock people up for twenty years for pot. It's made us the much safer nation we are today.

While your post gleems with sarcasm, it is statistically true our country has been safer with 3 Strikes You're Out law. It has in California. I just hope criminals think after the 2nd time that it might now be for life or at least move to your state if it doesn't have the 3 Strikes, You Are Out law. :)

Pot heads should get death penalty too! We are too lenient.

Three strikes laws have done little to overall crime rates, while increasing the costs to the taxpayers. It's a failed idea.

Are you nuts? Crime has gone down significantly in my state. What cost can you place on saving a life or injury due to the criminal not being able to commit those aggressive and deadly offenses? Get your "Hugs not prison" attitude attitude.

The overall crime rate in California, as measured by the Department of Justice’s California Crime Index, began declining before the passage of the Three Strikes law. In fact, the overall crime rate declined by 10 percent between 1991 and 1994. The crime rate continued to decline after Three Strikes, falling by 43 percent statewide between 1994 and 1999, though it has risen by about 11 percent since 1999. Similarly, the violent crime rate declined by 8 percent between 1991 and 1994 and then fell an additional 43 percent between 1994 and 2003.

While the national average has also gone down, many states have adopted the same as California. Let me know when keeping career criminals locked away forever not reducing crime? Are they inside prison with a multi level marketing scheme recruiting 3 clean citizens to now do 3 times the amount the prisoner was doing? Get real.
