E3 2018!

EA kicked it off first this year. I kind of hate EA, but if you dig their sports titles...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4cfHaR6tjpk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

They showed off

Anthem

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9TrdCtCkghg" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Battlefield V

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TAMQMO6CEvk" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Unravel 2

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JBq1RFUOnHI" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

They announced a Star Wars game. The Fallen Order. Apparently it takes place between episodes III and IV. They had nothing to show about it...but...meh.

Today's press conference is Microsoft and Xbox. Not expecting much from them. I don't think they are releasing any first party titles for 2018.

I despise EA. Hard pass on anything they do. I'm all campaign play and they have lead the charge for just multiplayer

Agamemnon 06-10-2018 03:14 PM

EA is worse than AIDS. Haven't played a game by them in years.

Archer81 06-10-2018 04:03 PM

Microsoft's conference had some interesting games drop

The last one for me was Mass Effect: Andromeda. EA had me until Bioware announced no SP DLC and no more patches.

So...they can eat a bag of *****. EA gutting one of their flagship franchises and have the B team try to create the 4th game in the series in 8 months when they had 5 years to work on it just so they could go create a Destiny clone that fulfills EA's "games as service" model.

****. That.

Not to yuck your yums but I worked in AAA gaming for most of my adult life. Happy to be out of it. I have to say I see nothing new here (then again I didnít look that hard).

Johnykbr 06-10-2018 04:33 PM

I'm stoked about the new Fallout. It's great that they didn't do another major city. I would have liked to have seen Canada or Alaska though

The good games are rarely AAA games anymore. AAA games are almost all just formulaic cash-grabs these days. What games did you work on if you don't mind me asking?

Agamemnon 06-10-2018 05:11 PM

Oh ****, how did I miss the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer? Now that's a game worth getting excited about. Probably time to upgrade my computer a bit...

I'm pumped for it. I'm a bit disappointed in some of the art direction, though. Palm trees and sunshine? Are you kidding me? Give me the Gibsonian overcast dying earth cyberpunk. Looks way too clean.

"The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." That's cyberpunk. Its CD Projekt, though, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

cyberpunk looks awful lol

It looks Rockstary as hell to me. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not what I was hoping for. We'll see.

Ironlung 06-10-2018 06:29 PM

**** EA for forcing NFL2K to go away.

We'll see. Witcher 3 had a lot more color and rich environments considering the world is at war, ravaged by all kinds of monsters and has the wild hunt, an elven "end of the world" scenario all happening at the same time. You still get this:

Along with this:

So lets see what they come up with for Cyberpunk 2077. I think this was the first reveal trailer for the game.

Bethesda press conference:

That's true. The Witcher 3 managed to still give off a pretty bleak vibe despite the scenery. Reminded me of that melancholic feeling that Tolkien gave LOTR.

I don't want to hear about those jackasses at Bethesda until they announce the next ES. I love me some Fallout but I'm getting burnt out on it.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 06-10-2018 07:04 PM

Just googled and found this from Gibson, himself: "The trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 strikes me as GTA skinned-over with a generic 80s retro-future, but hey that's just me."

Then they made Destiny2 suck worse than 1. I can't even finish ME:A as I am stuck in some sort of loop of destruction. Pisses me off to no end. And I was a Huge ME guy- Ran the orginals all the way through multiple times and redid them when my old console died so my next game would know my choices.

Of course I am still upset that KoTOR never went further. This should have had HALO level of Games. Double Lightsaber FTW

Didn't he post about LA noire all the time?

Basically you're just falling into that silly notion that the sun is gone in cyberpunk. It's a great aesthetic but it's not at all believable when you actually think about it, especially not in a game that is likely going to have a day/night cycle just like the Witcher 3 did. I guess I've had enough exposure to the it's-always-dark-because-this-is-a-dark-future thing to actually find the sunshine and palm trees refreshing. I fully expect lots of dystopian themes as well, regardless. Anyway, I'm excited because CD Projekt Red is making it, and therefore I'm 99% sure it's going to be awesome.

No idea. I never was part of a conversation about it.

Eerie ROFL!

I saw all the "what does it mean to be human" motifs of cyberpunk in there. The woman with half her face gone while she does her makeup was a striking image in my opinion. Seems like even Gibson, even though he was one of the pioneers, doesn't actually know what the overall genre is about (it's not inherently about dark skies and endless nights), and he clearly doesn't know what Cyberpunk 2020 was like it seems. That's where the 80's punk vibe is coming from by the way: the actual source material for the game, not Gibson's version of cyberpunk.

I'm sure I'll end up loving it but "rampant ecological disaster" is a pretty significant theme of most cyberpunk (Gibson, Sterling, Watts, Morgan, etc). Hopefully they at least grime up major parts of the world (I'm sure they will).

EDIT: I don't need rain constantly to be happy but the cityscapes look too new in the trailer to be traditional cyberpunk, IMO.
