An aviation agency spokesman, Sergei Izvolsky, told CNN the plane crash occurred around 4 p.m. (8 a.m. ET) during take-off because the plane couldn't reach a safe altitude fast enough.

The aircraft collided with the antenna of the airport beacon, fell to the ground and broke into several pieces and caught fire, Izvolsky said.

The plane carrying Russian, German and Swedish hockey players crashed as it took off from Russia's Yaroslavl airport Wednesday afternoon, killing 36 people.

[Updated at 10:45 a.m.] Lokomotiv Yaroslavl had a number of players with ties to the National Hockey League, according to the NHL website.

They included defensemen Karel Rachunek, Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins, as well as forwards Pavol Demitra and Josef Vasicek, the NHL website said, as well the team's head coach, Brad McCrimmon, who had played and coached in the NHL.

Man, what a tragedy. Entire team killed. I know Salei just had a kid and McCrimmon was going to Russia for his first head coaching gig. Very sad.

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl is a leading force in Russian hockey and came third in the KHL last year. The team's coach is Canadian Brad McCrimmon, who took over in May. He was mosly recently an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, and played 18 years in the NHL for Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Hartford and Phoenix.

The Russian team also featured several top European players and former NHL stars, including forward Josef Vasicek of the Czech Republic, Czech defenseman Karel Rachunek, Russian defensemen Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins, and Swedish goalie Stefan Liv.

Other players on the roster with NHL ties include Russian forward Alexander Vasyunov, who played for the Devils last season, and Jan Marek of the Czech Republic, who was drafted by the Kings in 2000.

Wow that's sad. It's obviously not more sad than non-athletes dying in a plane crash, but it affects you more when you're familiar with some of these people.

RIP to Demitra and those that lost their lives in the crash.

It's not confirmed that Salei is among the dead, there is a report that he was already in Minsk waiting for the team to arrive.

I'm seeing conflicting reports about Salei. But, the ominous thing is that there are no reports of him tweeting or emailing or whatever to not worry because he's OK. Which seems to suggest that the news will be bad.

Salei has been confirmed among the dead.

The only player who survived is Galinov, and he's burned over 90% of his body, so not sure how much longer he'll survive.

SlavaMalamud Galimov's doc: "Burns on 90% of body, including respiratory system. Lots of internal injuries... Condition -- beyond critical".

I hope you are correct. Salei was a former Duck and enjoyed his play. Hope more were saved or not on the plane. RIP for those who died.

Unfortunately the Belarus Hockey Federation, Russian Emergency Ministry and Belarusian news agencies all now confirm Ruslan Salei's death. :(

It is sad anytime a vehicle crashes. Just goes to show how anything can fail at any time and makes it more amazing when guys like Sullenberger can pull off the impossible.

Peace to their families.

For as enigmatic as he was during his Vancouver days, I always liked Demo. Watching him wire shots off the pipes and in was a treat. This sucks...so much.

Wow, that was hard to read. Skrastins was one of the toughest players I have ever seen in the NHL. Would go down to block every shot he could, but still managed to play nearly every game. He was the iron man for quite a while with the avs.

Vasyunov was an up-and-coming prospect for the Devils that went back to Russia this year to be close to his family.

If he he'd stayed with our AHL team, he'd still be alive. So, so sad.

Also, this is the Russian team that Varlamov would have been playing for if he went back to Russia and hadn't gotten traded to the Avs. Crazy.

This is...just about the worst thing ever. I've been despondent all day. Skrastins was a real favorite of mine, but it's not like that even matters. Just awful.
