ehhh.... none of the players are going to be THAT amazing. They wouldn't have been cut otherwise.

That being said, we might be able to pick up some depth at CB or DT

"That amazing" is obviously true...

...but there are situations where over whelming depth forces very capable players into the market. Like Tony suggested, being available isn't as much a knock on Hanson as it is a testament to fielding Aso, Samuel AND DRC

Can anyone think of an example of a waiver wire player makign a big difference for the team that picked them up?

Wasn't Danny Woodhead a waiver wire pickup? He's been pretty good.

LeGarrette Blount was claimed off of waivers after he was waived by Tennessee. he rushed for 1007 yards in 13 games.

i approve of how the Broncos have handled the waiver wire. I know we are pretty thin, but no reason to take the cap hit when we will be sub par this year anyway. (sub par, not winning a playoff game)

I'll never understand the "we're bad so let's not try to improve at all!" concept...

Think he was an offseason FA pickup from the niners but not sure. I thought though he went to San Fran from NY? then when Shanny came here Shanny signed him.

No joke.

Did anyone else see how ridiculously thin the roster is? When the starters go out, it looks like we're sending a team of Electric Football figurines out there and expecting the field to get hit by lightning to turn them on.

This is what happens when you cannot manage a football team.

With all the draft picks from the last 2 yrs being crap I'm not surprised. Broncos have no depth and will be lucky to win 8 games, but still they got better IMO. Just that the roster had some deep deep problems not only at the starting spots but all along the depth.

To build a deep team you have to draft, develop, your own picks. Broncos haven't been doing that even when Shanny was here. I love this draft though, we just need another one like it next yr, then maybe it will start to improve.

Not a ton of great players out there, obviously. But a few I think the Broncos could be looking at for some depth.

Stroud - DT
Hayes - MLB
Totupu - MLB

I'd bring in AJ Edds for a look, likely to replace Haggan in the LB Corps. I was pretty high on him last year when he went in the 4th Rnd to Miami. He blew out a knee in camp that year and was just released Monday after a productive preseason.

Guys a tackling machine that's very instinctive in coverage, solid against the run and would be a good backup at SLB.

Oh when you have very little starting material to work with.

Fox and company got rid of the trash. No sense paying for **** that sucks. That left us pretty thin in some areas but also got rid of the ****.

I don't think the Broncos will make many moves prior to the beginning of the season. After game one, I would expect them to go out and sign a player or two... Guys like Stroud or Lofa. The benefit is their contracts would not be guaranteed at that point. So if they suck you can cut them and you're only out a few game day checks. If they play well then you're getting what you pay for. If they sign one of those guys now, their contract is guaranteed for the year as an opening day roster player.

It'd be a NECESSARY step in the right direction for sure.

His ratings at Football Outsiders are ridiculously good. 8th in success rate, 2nd in yards per pass, 1st in YAC allowed. I don't get why more teams aren't interested. He's smallish, he's 30, and he's not "inexpensive" but I think he's good enough to start for some teams, and play nickel for most.

New England picked up Boomhauer's boy, AJ Edds.

Not really newsworthy, but I figured it was worth it to bump this thing to the front page.

Never trust FO -- Karl Paymah was the best DB in the league! -- on defensive back rankings. They're far too ambiguous to create an accurate/definitive stat line for.

I like Hanson to be a proven depth player for teams. Sadly, he'd probably be our #2 here, but what can ya do.

I like Hanson because of what's already been said multiple times by multiple people about the players in front of him in Philly. I confess to knowing almost nothing about him, but veteran depth at CB not named Nate Jones is something Denver really needs.

A team that really needs CB's decided to sign him.

Now that contracts aren't guaranteed, who should we be making a run at?

Drek
09-14-2011, 06:57 AM
We should sign Lofa Tatupu and Marcus Stroud, still. Both would be upgrades over our current starters even if they're all beat to ****.

Pat Williams is available still, not a bad guy to check on.

Jovan Haye is still fairly young and he's available, played in similar offensive systems including being drafted by Carolina when Fox and co. where there.

Benny Sapp got released from Miami after giving up Welker's 99 yarder, but their entire secondary was getting torched up to that point and he made the play that resulted in Brady being picked. He's got to be better than what we've got at corner right now.
