View Full Version : Joe 'Idiot Cannonball' Mays dislocates DJ's elbow

Boomhauer

Earlier this preseason, quite a few pointed out Mays wiffed on an RB in the hole and struck Dawkins instead. Last night, Mays slammed into DJ's back while DJ was making the tackle, freeing the RB to get another 5-7yrds and dislocating DJ's elbow. DJ is expected to miss 3-4weeks because of the scrub Mays.

Another major whiff came with 2min left in the 1st half. The RB took a release pass on the flat and turned up the sideline. Mays rumbled his way over and dove at the RB -- missing about 2yrds behind the RB. It wasn't even a juke by the RB or desperate attempt by Mays. It was a flat out 2yd whiff and would likely have been a tackle if Mays wasn't such an idiot. The RB got another 5-7yrds before being tackled.

What's a guy that's slower (both quicks and topspeed) than most DE and has the coverage/hand skills of a DT doing at MLB in a 4-3? What's a guy that whiffs so badly I wonder if he's cross eyed and regularly slams into and now injures his own teammates doing on an NFL roster? Most of all, who in their right mind would have him as a starting 4-3 MLB in the NFL? Cut his dumb az.

I haven't seen Mays 'destroy' anyone to date. He's usually the second or third Bronco to the play and if the play is right at him - he completely whiffs. If everyone stood still like tackling dummies and there was no play, just Mays running to a target, then I'm sure he could deliver a hit. But during games, we'd be better fielding 10 with him on the sideline.

His lack of contributions wouldn't be missed if he was riding pine and he wouldn't be able to harm his teammates. Better yet, cut his dumb az and let a backup that can at least make a tackle, move through trash or deflect a pass take his spot - Irving and Mohamed come to mind. Even if they're not fully ready, they're significantly better than Mays and his less aggressive equal, Haggan.

He hit the Seattle rb yesterday and drove him back about 5 yards. Last year he knock the shyt out of the kc te. Football is a violent sport and people are gonna get hurt. It happens, even in figure skating.

I was about to refresh my Avatar, but I'm now going to leave it in place for a few weeks in honor of this thread.

He should get more playing time now. By taking out our leading tackler the last several years, Mays might be staying in for nickle like he did yesterday. Woodyard was the nickle LB that usually replaced him, but now that he's starting WLB we get to see Mays 'excellent' pass coverage highlighted. Unless the Broncos sub their #2 nickle LB for Mays - Mohamed.

To me he seems a little out of shape. Constantly has his hands on his hips. I didn't expect him to start this year, maybe I'm just a little disappointed after Parcells gave him a first round grade. His story is great though. Hopefully just thinking a little to much like most rookies do.

Oh right, I forgot...what an ass!

To think, I'm a DJ Williams fan, and I said that Joe had a good game. The calamity!

Joe was great in his gap assignments, very effective rushing the passer, and used his explosiveness to absolutely wreck anyone (including DJ) that got in his way. Best play from the MLB position I've seen from a Broncos player in a while. I hope it continues into the season, because if he keeps this up I think we can have a VERY good defense.

Yea, I think after Von missed wrapping up Jackson on that one 3rd down he got some coaching on the sideline. It payed off because he came back with a vengeance on that hit.

Joe Mays is fair and just, there is no arguing his compassion for human life. The Bronco faithful should be proud to have such a noble and worthy starting MLB. Between Mays wholesome perspective on life and insatiable appetite for destruction, Brian Dawkins flying tackles, and the blitzkrieg developing outside the tackles, I would Dennis Allen is putting together a very formidable defense. Ah, how could I forget Rahim Moore! We should just call Dennis Allen, Helmuth Von Mulke (The Great Prussian general that was one of the key inovators of Blitzkrieg tactics)

On a serious note, Joe Mays had a good game. It is unfortunate that he hurt DJ and unfortunate that Mays isn't a true starter at MLB, but he'll do just fine for now. He has a heavy head and when he takes good angles can tackle and be physical. When you are a crappy team, that will work. Rome wasn't built in a day and this defense won't be rebuilt in an offseason. A physical but slow MLB who is a bit of a retahd isn't the worst thing in the world.

Mays is nothing special but he fits the big play mentality of this defense. He may miss a few tackles but he is probably going to have some big hits possibly resulting in fumbles or negative yardage. He's probably no more than a placeholder until the Broncos can find their MLB moving forward, but this defense can succeed with him in that role. I would've preferred Nick Barnett, but let's see what Mays can do in this role. As someone else mentioned you can't expect the team to fix everything that was wrong with a last place defense in just one offseason especially as they try to get younger.

I'd say Mays is a very solid backup MLB. He hits hard and makes enough plays that would easily give him the backup MLB job. But he sucks in pass coverage, lacks great ball/player awareness and quickness/speed isn't all that impressive. We definitely need a starting MLB. Was hoping Irving would have fit the bill but he's still a work in progress. He may eventually get there, but I wouldn't rule out the Broncos going for another MLB in next years draft.

I don't agree completely with you very often but I certainly do here. If nothing else, at least he'll make the opposing offense think twice about running right at him or HE WILL break something more times than not.
