I don't think the refs understand the "roughing the passer" rule... not even close there.

They gave Buffalo one on Doom's roughing the passer, so makes it even.

Maybe you missed when we were running the ball and taking our time to start the drive.
And then not to mention running the ball with 13 seconds left at the 7 yard line.

it APPEARED that his helmet earpiece wasn't working at the start of the drive....I know it sounds corny, but I like the way he took over and called a couple nice plays.

As I'm typin this, tough break on that tip. Hopefully they give him some more reps after the half, would like to see him make some plays after getting some rhythm.

AND, good answer by Fox going into the half (regarding the rahim hit), but you KNOW he knew it was a legit hit, he's gotta be happy we're out there layin some ****ing wood!

yeah...playcalling at start of that drive was strange...no sense of urgency.

I'd assume they wanted to just run the clock and give Quinn a clean slate for the 2nd half. Instead he made some key completions and Ball does solid rushing, so next thing McCoy knew we were in legit 2 minute drill territory.

Good Christ, when doesn't he? His apologists abound.

It's okay, Bailey got the teflon treatment for years too. Champ never actually got beat till 2010....the times it did happen, it was because of lack of safety help, it was never his fault. ::)

Tebow gets the opposite side of the spectrum just as much though where no matter what he does to help win the game or the stats he puts up, they'll still call him a failed QB with mechanics that will never work in the nfl

Yup. A guy that stretch the field like that at that size needs is a weapon in any offense.

Frustrating, but at least WR is a position that we don't necessarily need to worry about at the moment.

If previous Achilles tears are anything to go by he won't have his full explosion back until 2012.

Now that he can do some work though he needs to be polishing his route running. It was his one big weakness coming out of college. If he takes this time to refine those core elements of playing WR he could be amazing when he's back healthy.

Totally agreed on the 2012 timeframe for full recovery for the tendon rupture. I ruptured both of mine at the same time in high school. Took 18 months before things began to feel "normal". He's definately ahead of me by only having to rehab one, plus he has the finest medical treatment and rehab that money could buy. 2012 sounds right to me, and I know he will come back just fine. I did.

As for the route running. The weakness perceived coming out Ga Tech was primarily due to the style of offense run by Paul Johnson. Triple option receivers get that rap all of the time. One thing it does do is develope blocking skills in your wideouts. The thing to remember about Thomas is that he is a very, very smart kid. I live here in Atlanta and am a Tech fan (wife is a grad on the GI bill). Thomas developed a water pumping and purification system that he then went to Africa and the desert Southwest with. He will just need to be coached up and he will be fine, and frankly I will be suprised if he doesn't become one of the dominant receivers in the game.

I'm not really sure how people can be upset with the first team defense in this game. Yeah, it's Buffalo, but glasses houses, last year was the worst Bronco football in 40 years.

Von Miller has a ridiculous first step, had a sack and was a slight mistiming of the snap away from a second.

Elvis looked like a beast, even made a wicked play in run support.

Bunkley was active throughout the entire half.

Fox looks like he's finally going to utilize D.J.'s athleticism in a straight line fashion. D.J. responded by blowing things up.

Moore decapitated someone.

Franklin had a solid game. Lloyd made the best catch I've seen in a preseason game this season. Orton played well, Brady played well, sans one tipped pass.

No doubt, but the sideline to sideline speed with Doom, Miller, and D.J. is encouraging to say the least. I'll have to rewatch the half, but Bunkley really did an excellent job of gap integrity and was really active too.

If the injuries hit our first team where ****ed, but player for player on first team defense, there is talent and speed there. We'll see week one, but I'm pleased so far with the defensive progression. I'm going to call it, Von gets 10 + sacks this year.

i thought we were done with this kind of BS when Shanny got booted, then they hired McD and he was right back to pulling this kind of BS (see Hillis et. al.) and now it looks like Fox and Elway do things the same way.

don't forget that Orton wants a big money deal. he's getting $8M this year and he'll want more than that and a longer term deal wherever he signs for next year. this alone is enough reason for me to be soured on this season. if a miracle happens and Orton actually wins 8 or 9 games, we might be stuck with him as our QB for the next few years because Fox and Elway are too risk averse to rock the boat, and at a high salary too.

sadly, i think you're right. if Tebow isn't in their plans, the best thing to do is find a team who wants him and get the best possible deal for him.

i'm not optimistic about this team if Fox and Elway have decided that Orton is the answer to their QB problems. Quinn might turn out to be a competent QB if given the chance as well. i just hate to see the Tebow experiment end just because Fox and Elway are under so much peer pressure from the so-called "experts" around the league to give up on him without ever trying to find a way to utilize his talents.

you can almost hear it in their voices when asked about Tebow, both Elway and Fox both seem a bit embarrassed even having him on the team... as if the whole league thinks he's a joke and only the Broncos were dumb enough to draft him. i even read one former Bronco who said, "there's a reason 31 other teams didn't want him" in that article linked here the other day. if it's now the conventional wisdom around the league that Tebow will never be an NFL QB, there are alot of guys who will go along with that rather than be ridiculed for believing otherwise. it sounds to me like Fox and Elway are more comfortable going along with everyone else rather than digging in their heels and showing the "experts" that they are wrong.

Orton is a competent QB. but he's not more than that. he never has been and he never will be. with a stellar team surrounding him, he could win plenty of NFL games. he just wouldn't win them by himself with his arm. his deficiencies would be masked if the rest of the team was truly playoff caliber. however, this is not the 2011 Denver Broncos and Orton is not the guy to rebuild around in my opinion. i don't hate the guy. i don't love the guy. he is what he is... a guy the Bears gave up on in favor of Frown Cannon. that tells me all i need to know.

That's the sentiment of every Broncos fan whether they admit it or not.

We all know that Orton has proven himself incapable of delivering the plays that lead to victory. We have seen him float through games time after time three-and-out after three-and-out only to turn it on when the game is in the tank for the other team.

If the Broncos were the 2000 Ravens, it wouldn't be so bad. But we're not. Its frustrating watching QB's earn a paycheck for themselves and earn nothing for the fans. Orton epitomizes that.

If we're going to suck (more likely than not at this point), then I'd much rather pull for the wild card who has shown flashes of brilliance, who WANTS to be a Bronco, and who lays it all on the line every play for the team and the fans.

This whole thing is just strange. It doesn't make any sense.

REP.

This is the corner the team has backed itself into. You have an exciting unknown upside in Tebow who's still very raw and probably not quite ready to start, but who the fans are clamoring for.

You have a slightly better than middle of the road game manager who will never take a talent deficient team and carry them. The same slightly better than middle of the road game manager who you did everything to get rid of.

Lastly, you have Brady Quinn, a guy with tons of talent, but has never put it all together. Even though he has looked decent this year in preseason, it's different when DC's are throwing all sorts of exotic blitzes and smokes at you.

that's 6 AFC teams for sure better than Denver and the AFC only gets 6 playoff spots.

the AFC West isn't going to get a wildcard spot, so any team coming out of that division is going to have to win it.

KC won it last year. Oakland manhandled us last year. Sandy Eggo has manhandled us for the past few years.

so i'd call that a talent deficit compared to the teams actually contending for playoff spots.

I'm fine with Orton or Quinn starting as long as we have a successful running game and a better defense.

Let Tebow sit - what's the big deal? This is a tough schedule this year and it's clear that the FO isn't behind Tebow so what do we, as a team, gain from starting Tebow when the FO almost clearly does not have long term plans for the guy?

If he develops when Orton wants more money then give him a shot but until then lets see what Orton does with a running game and a better defense. It's crystal clear that Orton is light years ahead of Tebow and to be honest Quinn looked far more solid than Tebow has to date.

that's 6 AFC teams for sure better than Denver and the AFC only gets 6 playoff spots.

the AFC West isn't going to get a wildcard spot, so any team coming out of that division is going to have to win it.

KC won it last year. Oakland manhandled us last year. Sandy Eggo has manhandled us for the past few years.

so i'd call that a talent deficit compared to the teams actually contending for playoff spots.

I would really enjoy if you could explain how Indy and San Diego are head and shoulders above us talent wise...Manning and then??? And San Diego has been a team losing talent every year for the past 3 years

You just picked the 6 teams with the most recent success

this league is now a QB driven league. this is precisely the argument against Orton that many make. if you're happy with 7-9 or 8-8 (maximum), then Orton is fine. getting to the next level requires an elite QB (IND, SD, NE, PIT?) or a team so good and well-rounded that the QB need only not lose any games (NYJ, BAL, PIT). that defines those 6 teams. 5 were in the playoffs last year, and SD with Rivers (who i hate) has been raping the Broncos for most of the past 4 years. we're not better than those 6 teams. not on paper and not on the field. it sucks but it's reality. the Broncos are a team rebuilding. rebuilding teams with new coaches and new front offices in their first year should not be expected to beat playoff teams. if you really think they should, then go to vegas and place some bets. you'll get great odds. my only advice is don't bet your meal money or you might go hungry when reality hits.

are we talent deficient? and if so compared to who?

Compared to two thirds of the league...

Love the single back set with #27 in the backfield (or McGahee)... yep, love it!

In addition to the AFC teams already mentioned, Green Bay, Philly, NYG, NO, Atlanta, Tampa and probably Detroit. You could also make an argument for Chicago and Dallas.

After re-watching the game, here's my current 53. I expect 2, maybe even 3 of the reserve OL to be different once guys start getting waived and I expect Ty Warren to land on IR before the season opener as Doom did a year ago.

(3) QB: Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn, Tim Tebow
(5) RB: Knowshon Moreno, Spencer Larsen [FB], Willis McGahee, Lance Ball, Jeremiah Johnson
(5) WR: Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal, Eric Decker, Matt Willis, Britt Davis
(4) TE: Daniel Fells, Julius Thomas, Virgil Green, Dan Gronkowski
(8) OL: Ryan Clady, Zane Beadles, JD Walton, Chris Kuper, Orlando Franklin, Chris Clark, Russ Hochstein, Eric Olsen
(8) DL: Elvis Dumervil, Broderick Bunkley, Marcus Thomas, Robert Ayers, Jeremy Jarmon, Kevin Vickerson, Ryan McBean, Jason Hunter
(7) LB: DJ Williams, Joe Mays, Von Miller, Wesley Woodyard, Mario Haggan, Nate Irving, Mike Mohamed
(5) CB: Champ Bailey, Andre Goodman, Cassius Vaughn, Syd'Quan Thompson, Perrish Cox
(5) S: Brian Dawkins, Rahim Moore, Kyle McCarthy, Quinton Carter, Darcel McBath

Not bad. My only change would be putting in Bruton at DB, and getting rid of Cox.

David Anderson is a lock to make this team.

I had that up until Bruton's injury, now I could see him on IR - hope I'm wrong though as he's a good STer.

David Anderson is a lock to make this team.

I like David but I'm not going to go as far as to call him a lock, I have a weird feeling they go with a backup WR that's really active on ST (other than Anderson being a return guy obviously). And I don't expect to see Demaryius Thomas on the active roster at any point this season - again, hope I'm wrong.

That's just stupid.

F the circus. Tebow has value at goal line and short yardage. Use him there until he learns the other skills necessary to be a starting QB.

LOL. Gator fans would blow their brains out. ROFL!

Its on again right now. Before I start talking about the game, I would like to say one thing. Thank you McD for Brandon Lloyd!

From what I've seen so far in the first half. If Moreno and Willis stay healthy, then our running game will be vastly improved from last year. Orton looks better and the front office does have a tough thing to deal with. All of this talk about Beadles and Walton, I don't really see, but the line looks good and improved from last year. Yeah, they get beat from time to time, but for being second year guys, they played well. Larsen looks lost out there half of the time. Joe Mays in pursuit is pretty bad. I'm very excited about this aggressive defense. Especially the back 7. DJ looks happy to be back on the weak side. Moore should not have been flagged and definitely not fined for that hit.

I'm just excited for the season. It will be an interesting year.
