Catholic Archbishop proclaims American secular media unfit, incapable of providing trustworthy information about religious topics:

“And with relatively few exceptions,” he said, “the mass media tend to cover these disputed issues with a combination of ignorance, laziness, and bias against traditional Christian belief.”

The Archbishop continued: “We make a very serious mistake if we rely on media like the New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, or MSNBC for reliable news about religion. These news media simply don’t provide trustworthy information about religious faith — and sometimes they can’t provide it, either because of limited resources or because of their own editorial prejudices.”

“These are secular operations focused on making a profit,” he said. “They have very little sympathy for the Catholic faith, and quite a lot of aggressive skepticism toward any religious community.”

Okay...this is a big deal.

There are many, many catholics in America. From Nancy Pelosi to Justice John Roberts, there are catholics all over the country and all over the globe. When catholic leaders speak, the words reverberate with power down to parishes.

Here you have a proclaimation by a significant catholic leader that New York Times, CNN, MSNBC, Newsweek, and the greater American leftist media with a secular agenda can no longer be considered a trusted institution for catholics. Instead, he proclaims them untrustworty, and thus worthy of skepticism.

This has direct political implications.

What are the direct political impications? I'm assuming you mean for all parties involved.

Look forward to your response.

The Archbishop probably thought differently when the Catholic church and its pedophile priests were getting plenty of media attention.

The media outlets that the Archbishop is referring to are the biggest, most influential leftist outlets in the country.

This is an explicit rebuke from a church leader. That means that parishoners who maybe havent thought about it before will be more likely to question those media outlets.

That means that the leftist propaganda flow is getting cut off from the biggest organized religion in the country.

Da bishop is just upset that the media doesn't treat religion, especially the Catholic church, with kid gloves any more.

Ahhh, kind of the way the Catholic church handled the priest/sex scandal overall.

Right. Billions of Catholics were waiting for what this one archbishop said at a conference in Spain to decide whether to read those papers.

The conservative Catholics who follow every word from on high were already watching Fox News. This guy didn't say anything other spokesmen haven't already said in terms of the church's persecution complex about media coverage. (Why oh why would the media treat us skeptically after a decade of uncovering massive, systemic cover ups of kiddie rape? They must hate God.)

The rest of the church will do what it has always done - go to mass occasionally and think for themselves on every other day of the week. Kind of like the 98% who already use contraception.

There are many devout Catholics who may not be interested in understanding the dichotomy of media spin in this country. They just got word from the church to treat those far leftist outlets with skepticism because of their inability to accurately cover religion. That's now what they understand about those outlets.

And they have reason to set themselves opposed to those outlets. What do most non-Catholics hear about the Catholic church through that media? That the priests are all sexual predators, that wacky conspiracy theorists drum up some new conspiracy every week, that the Pope is bad because he is "anti-gay", etc. The media treats the Catholic church much harsher than they would treat Muslim citizens in this country. Heck ,that same media has been promoting the installation of a victory mosque near Ground Zero.

The words of Archbishops reverberate throughout all Catholic communities. To Vietnamese, Hispanic, Irish, Italians, etc, etc.

Its a big deal.

There is extreme big gap between the Papacy and American Catholics. One of the policy that Pope and Cardinals have be purposing in the last couple of years is an attempt to reconnect with US/Western European catholic base. It hasn't be going to well.

As seen here:

Just as predictable as the Catholic higher-ups, who the vast majority of Catholics disagree with on a vast array of topics and issues, being "anti-media". I mean, is this really a surprise? To anyone?

As a Catholic who lives in a city with multiple parishes that are inundated with Catholics that are cultural in nature and nothing more, this message will not resound. Nor is this really anything more than a non-binding opinion of one bishop who is addressing an issue that is not a precept of the church, a doctrine or dogma. Consider it good advice, but not much more inasmuch as it is not theological and not meant to be a rule to follow by Catholics.

Is he right? Yes, but this pronouncement is hardly novel or new. The Church has put out TONS of stuff on the mass media and its obligation to society in its Social Doctrine and it really boils down to 'Stay close to the Church, cultivate your faith, and use your head for something more than a doorstop.' Educated Catholics already know this, and will either gain strength from this or pretend they didn't hear it, just like the 2008 elections. Uneducated ones could care less and are likely part timing at their local Methodist church already anyway, so there it is.

BTW, this bishop's book is right on the money. But one thing he neglected to mention was the part the media has played in getting the abuse scandal out in the open and holding criminals accountable. While it has been overly zealous and unfair in many instances, it has also shed light on legitimate victims and their stories. Yes, even MSNBC.
