Running with the 1's at practice. Kid played a solid game and is being rewarded for it.

I do like this quote from the coach
"If you can play," Fox said, "I don't care where you came from."

Is Dawkins at practice too or getting some rest like coaches do with aged vets from time to time?

I think that's the real question.

interesting player, wonder if he has "impact starter" ability? doesnt seem so, though i think he had 2 sacks against the cowboys?

He was refering to him being an UDFA, not that he played at Notre Dame ;D

Kyle was the most sharp assignment sound defender at DAL from my notes. What was nice to see is how quickly he read his keys and then made plays.

Where do you think his floor & ceiling are?

No idea really. I can only grade what I see, and his first game film was top grade though. Easily the top grade too. Where he goes from here depends on his next few games.

Nothing against any of our rookies, but this kid out played all of them against Dallas. Never heard of him before but if he keeps that kinda play up I glad we have him.

The kids a baller. I was pumped when we got him. He'll be a back up and soak up knowledge from BDawk. But our future is this kid and Rahim I believe.

I thought he played a great game. He was very active and was involved in a number of plays.
He always seems to be the first one at the scene...

Is notre dame pumping out NFL starters anymore?

But yeah, it was referring to his UDFA as pointed out above.

He made a clutch open field tackle on third and short, had a couple sacks, and some really nice stops. He really impressed Thursday.

Can we just call him White McCarthy? Or at least Whitey?

He reminds me alot of John Lynch or Tom Zbikowski.

Yeah, that open field tackle on the Dallas TE to prevent the 3rd down conversion was textbook. Didn't waste time trying to wrestle the TE down, just took a good angle and took his legs out.

McCarthy was just lost last preseason, horribly bad.

This year, he is playing like a high draft pick with a mean streak. I would have cut him last season (shows what I know), but this kid has really showed up this year. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him play against Dallas and hope he continues to develop.

He went to Cardinal Mooney HS in my hometown. It's really cool to see him do well for us.

Fixed for accuracy. Josh Barrett, this could have been you..... if you could tackle and cover like McCarthy did on Thursday.

I thought McCarthy had a chance since they kept him as a UDFA from the former regime, but then they drafted Moore and Carter to go along with McBath and Bruton. I thought McCarthy had some potential, but it looked like he might be on his way out. Apparently, not so.

The only thing I'd temper the optimism with is that he was blitzing their 3rd string QB. An experienced QB would probably beat him. He looked great against their second and 3rd team though. On the second blitz..he was blocked by their RB and he got off it. I hope we see more.

I love it when UDFA end up being starting quality - it generally means they have amazing work ethics and it always makes for one heck of an inspirational story

definitely. going up to combine, pro day and finally UDFA signing period, these guys bust their ass to try and get a look from a team. imagine spending 4+ months preparing after the season to get signed then find out no one is calling you, or to make it onto a 90 man roster only to get 1 or 2 reps per practice and waived without even getting a chance to show what you can (or cant) do.

a TON more udfa than drafted guys make it into camps (read 615 this year) and only 1-3 per team make it. crazy.

I saw something about more UDFA's are on NFL rosters than 3rd round draft picks. Something ESPN came up with last year.

He timed his blitzes perfectly, and that's all he can do. Some QBs would see it and get rid of the ball, others wouldn't. Either way he did exactly what the play asked him to do, and that's all that matters.

You missed it.

Of course McCarthy isn't really a hard hitter so it has no basis in reality, but it happened all the same.

only 30-something (depending on compensation picks) third rounders a year, versus the hundreds of UDFAs. not too surprising.

McCarthy running with the one's in place of Moore.

I still think Moore starts week one, but it's nice to see there's some competition and we'll ultimately have some depth there when the season starts.

I think that's the real question.

Finally got an answer to this question in case anyone else cares:

McCarthy stepped in for Moore and not for Dawkins.

"Broncos coach John Fox has told his players that the "best players play." Fox wants constant competition for starting jobs, and he is getting it. McCarthy, for example, worked with Denver's No. 1 defense Saturday in practice after playing well in the preseason opener at Dallas. McCarthy's promotion dropped rookie safety Rahim Moore, a second-round draft pick from UCLA, to the No. 2 defense Saturday. Fox's message to Moore: You need to have better practices to stick with the No. 1 defense."

RT @MaxBroncos (http://twitter.com/MaxBroncos): Now Rahim Moore back to working w/ 1st team, alongside B. Dawkins in a red-zone period. #Broncos (http://twitter.com/#%21/search?q=%23Broncos) looking at lot of D combos

------------------------------

Personally wouldnt be surprised for Moore to be in on passing downs and cover 1 looks while McCarthy gets longer looks for running downs and easier coverage responsibilities (req less range)

I think Moore starts week 1, but it's nice to see McCarthy has the ability to provide some depth at the position. Coaches may be testing Rahim as well.

This guy McCarthy continues to impress. Dude ran down Leon Washington, ran him out of bounds. Took the good angle on Leon Washington, shook off the stiff arm and ran him out of bounds. Nice play.
