View Full Version : Who will be the Broncos' starting MLB?

Easily one of the most important positions in the 4-3 Defense, the MLB is one of Denver's biggest personnel question marks on defense. Who do you see starting at the position?

Joe Mays
Been running with the 1st team all camp. Had a strong showing late last season against the run in the 3-4 but there is concern he doesn't have the speed to play sideline-to-sideline or coverage ability necessary to be an effective 4-3 MLB.

Mario Haggan
Already moved to the 2nd team at MLB after being experimented with at DE. Has experience at the 4-3 MLB position and has also played 4-3 OLB, 3-4 ILB & 3-4 OLB. Has always been solid but unspectacular.

Nate Irving
Drafted in the 3rd round and in some opinions could've been a 1st round pick. Easily the most athletic fit for the position but currently dealing with injuries in addition to lack of OTAs and minicamps due the lockout.

DJ Williams
The intriguing, if unlikely, option. Wesley Woodyard has always been solid as a 4-3 WLB, the team could start him there and move Williams to MLB. He'd be out-of-position for the 6th time in his 8 year career but could be the best fit on the roster and get the team's arguably three best LBs (Williams, Woodyard and Von Miller) on the field together.

Hopefully Nate Irving.

DJ Williams, Really?

Joe Mays to start the year since our focus will be (or at least it better damn well be in this division) stopping the run first.

Irving will probably start by Thanksgiving though.

There was a gaping hole in the first team defense right up the middle of the field on Thursday.

The BBT needed to address the DT's and the MLB spot in the offseason. They may or may not have done one, and they did nothing about the other.

Joe Mays until he gets injured and then Nate Irving.

Mario Hagaan looked terrible out there against Dallas. He's always a step too late and misses tackles. Send him packing.

I like Mays, but really more in a novelty kind of way. He's the only true hitter we have out there right now. But, in the little action I saw from the other night, he guessed wrong a couple of times. I'm just not sure what kind of instincts he has.

DJ Williams is an absolute atrocity at MLB.

I haven't seen enough of Irving, but that's the guy you hope can step up and be a future starter.

Exactly this. Saved me from typing it out.

Williams is perfect on the outside, so I don't want him at MLB.
Mohammed will be a good ST player, but I don't think he'll ever start.
Haggan is a really nice guy and an asset to the team, but not starting caliber.

I like Mays to start the season. He's a playmaker, even though when he whiffs, he whiffs hard.... but I hope Irving can work his way into the starting lineup by the end of the year.

Interesting fact I heard from Griese during the Cowboys preseason game: when John Fox took over the Panthers, they had the worst defense in the league - the next year they were 5th.

+1

I don't think Irving is ready yet, I doubt he has the mental aspect of the position due to the lack of an off-season. MLB is so important in a 4-3, I really hope Irving turns out to be the real deal

It'll be Haggen. He's the best one we have.

Surprised at no Mohammad on the list. He's in direct competition for it as well.

I want Irving but I think It's Mays.

I hope this is the case and not b/c the Broncos are desperate.

I wish we would just cut Mays and bring in Kirk Morrison for a year.

Either way that position will be very "meh." Hagan and Mays both looked the same the other night, pretty good, big, run stuffers who miss stuff. I have no idea what Irving will do.

Irving is a third rounder so those expecting him to be our savior at MLB are being a bit too optimistic if you ask me.

This thread makes me think of Kirk Morrison and Lofa Tatupu......

Only replacement level players at best currently- but would not be surprised to see either in Denver w/in 2 weeks....

Exactly. We can cut Mays and Hagen sign one of those guys. That would give us hopefully Morrison and Irving with DJ as a third emergency type should we need him. Morrison is a much better run stuffer then Mays anyways.

It is Mays job to lose...and I think he will at some point after getting eaten alive in the passing game.

I would like to see more of Irving.

Maybe they will rotate guys in and use Mays on run downs and bring in a more athletic MLB on passing downs?

I'm expecting Mays on 1st and 2nd downs. When we go to nickel packages he'll be the first LB off the field, and when we play Miller on the line we'll go with DJ and Woodyard.

Mays as a two down run stuffer should work out well if the DL can keep him covered and he's got athletic standouts like DJ and Miller flanking him.

Long term it'll be Irving, but the loss of OTAs and his need to put on a few pounds before being a full time MLB make letting him sit behind Mays for as long as possible this year the best for his long term growth. No point letting him take tons of abuse in the middle while he's still developing.

I'm not understanding why everyone is so high on Irving? So far he has only run with the threes and Mohammed is above him, right?

How can we expect him to be a starter anytime soon?

Cuz he was a stud in college
Also he has the instincts and aggressiveness needed in a MLB, but also is athletic enough to cover
I think durability concerns dropped his stock after he got into that major car wreck and had those metal rods put into his body to hold himself together

for what its worth, Bill Parcells said he had a first round grade on him

also, I dont think he is behind Mohammed, he sprained his ankle and has been hurt for a while

well see but I think he will eventually get into the starting lineup and hold on to it
for now though Joe Mays is gonna start for us

When was the last time a team benched their starting MLB halfway through the year for a 3rd string, unproven, injured rookie, who hasn't had any reps? You must be dreaming. I can see IN ONE GAME, that this team has shown considerable improvement in stopping the run. That's what Fox and Allen were brought here for. This isn't the deep-zone monkey scatter, that you're used to seeing. That is evident.

This defense lives and dies with whoever starts game 1 at MLB. Right now it's looking like the joltin' Joe Mays.

And the offense lives and dies with whoever starts game 1 at QB. Right now it's looking like girly-arm Orton and his two left feet.
If that's the measure of our O and D, is it time to start a draft Luck #1 fanclub?

Figuring it is for the first game of this year, I hope he was smart enough to put an end date to the poll. So many vote after a particular poll should have been over but no end date. Really easy to predict what our record will be in 2010 when you can bump that old thread and vote on January 5th, 2011. Ultimate voting after an event would have to go to the cheating go_broncos and the Pick 'em League we had here at the Mane.
