Flash Mobs are becoming a global epidemic.
Thanks to social networks like Twitter and Facebook, more and more so-called flash mobs are materializing across the globe, leaving police scrambling to keep tabs on the spontaneous assemblies.
Flash mobs started off in 2003 as peaceful and often humorous acts of public performance, such as mass dance routines or street pillow fights. But in recent years, the term has taken a darker twist as criminals exploit the anonymity of crowds, using social networking to coordinate everything from robberies to fights to general chaos.
In London, recent rioting and looting has been blamed in part on groups of youths using Twitter, mobile phone text messages and instant messaging on BlackBerry to organize and keep a step ahead of police.
And Sunday in Philadelphia, Mayor Michael Nutter condemned the behavior of teenagers involved in flash mobs that have left several people injured in recent weeks.
"What is making this unique today is the social media aspect," said Everett Gillison, Philadelphia's deputy mayor for public safety. "They can communicate and congregate at a moment's notice. That can overwhelm any municipality."
The National Retail Federation said 10 percent of 106 companies it surveyed reported being targeted in the last year by groups of thieves using flash mob tactics.
"Retailers are raising red flags about criminal flash mobs, which are wreaking havoc on their business, causing concerns about the safety of their customers and employees, and directly impacting their bottom line," the federation said in a report, which advises retailers to monitor social media networks and report planned heists to the police.

These mostly tend to happen where there are relatively large amounts of socially marginalized youths in a small area, I just don't see this happening in Martha's Vineyard or Rhode Island.
With modern communications technology it has certainly become easier to organize groups in a very short time and once a group is assembled it takes only a few bad apples to escalate things beyond control. With TV images of revolutions in Egypt, Libya, Syria, Qatar and other places I think some who would have been common gangsters and petty criminals instead turn on society in general to get revenge for wrongs and percieved wrongs that have been done against these kids.
Like World War I it just takes 1 spark to set off the powder keg, and for a lot of these kids who really do not have a future in the job market due to lack of education and maybe a criminal record or children to support it becomes an easy way to guiltfree crimes of violence, theft and destruction of property.

Small retailers in the larger cities are at great risk, it's really just the tip of the iceberg. A liquor store can be wiped out in a matter of minutes and the cops can't control a spontaneous mob that large.

I experienced it in Vancouver a few years ago. Out of no where a bunch of punk teens starting pouring into the streets. They got their asses handed to them rather quickly. Almost had to pop one myself.

It becomes somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy, you protest and riot because of percieved injustice often racial, and by doing so you justify the racial profiling and increase the discrepancy in arrests and convictions between races.
I believe the kids in London have some genuine complaints, they are being profiled by the police, but now they are doing everything they can to prove the police right in using profiling.

http://thesheaf.com/news/2011/02/14/new-app-tracks-police-kettling/
Police in the U.K. have used kettling at times to break up the ongoing student protests and college building occupations. After being herded onto a bridge and kept there for several hours in freezing temperatures, a group of students at the University College of London have created a program to help protesters avoid the same fate.
“There’s been a huge series of protests as well, marches in the streets, around this, which have met with very, very heavy-handed police violence, basically,” said Tim Hardy, Sukey press director. “Very aggressive kettling, including pre-emptive kettling, batoning, charging people with horses.”
Sukey is a smartphone application, SMS text message service and online program that will allow people to find out where police are kettling protesters before they find themselves trapped.

There is no solution, that is the beauty of it.
There have always been outlaws and social pariahs, there will always be. Only when resources become endless will this end.
A societal hierarchy requires people at the bottom, just as any pool requires a number of less fit members because they carry the greatest potential, look at W Bush, was it an achievement for him to become president? It was handed to him, he never in his life struggled with anything that wasn't his own doing, he never had to overcome any odds - when the leading class becomes too inbred and decadent it will fall, that has happened to every monarchy that didn't relinquish power voluntarily, it has happened to many despotic nations.
True change can only come from the lowest ranks of the societal ladder because only they have no interest in the status quo. That is why many great military leaders have come from relatively humble backgrounds, they have no interest in how things are usually done, they have an interest in how things should be done to achieve maximum success.
The only thing we can do is attempt to appease the masses enough that the revolution when it comes will be peaceful and most societal structures we benefit from will stay unharmed, and we avoid a Khmer Rouge like purge. The sad truth is that in 500 years, the man celebrated as the greatest president since the year 2000 will decend from people who are almost certainly among the bottom 20% of earners today - the next Lincoln will be like the first one.

I know that the liberal hard-cores have been programmed to reject it with irrational platitudes, but the Tea Party is exactly what you have described.
It is an individual rights-first movement that has rejected the impersonal march of the globalist elite. That's why it has been met with such fierce resistance by the globalist interests like the GOP establishment and the DNC arms that are controlled by the same interests that control the mainstream media.
What they aren't realizing is that people are not following their "lead" in the march further towards globalism...people are being left out to dry financially by the movement and are being forced to become politically active.
What you'll see in the forthcoming years is that there will be further divide between the elitist political/banking class and the rest of the populace. At this point they are acting as if the vote is a mere formality that can be manipulated by controlling what people see on TV and how it is presented. The Tea Party threw a monkey wrench in that operation...the first time it has ever been done.
The Tea Party is truly a peoples' rights movement...the same kind of movement that spawned America from the force of British oppression in the mid 1700's. Its no mistake that the Tea Party has stuck to the same principles that divided the colonists from the imperialists the last time this happened on this continent, and that it has been met with the same imperial resistance.
People are wary of the Tea Party because the media has presented it first as uncool and unstylish, then as uneducated, then as racist, now as "terrorist". Instead of being unnerved by the language that they are using to pretty much slander the Tea Party, people should question why the media and the DNC talking points are the same, and why they have gotten progressively more inflammatory. What about "fiscal responsibility" deserves such inflammatory language? Seriously. That's all the Tea Party is about. Thats it. Its something that every single person in the country who has ever met a budget understands, and therefore it is a universal truth that is easily understood.
The Tea Party is a nonviolent, peaceful movement to replace elitist establishment political/banking class politicians with practical people who want to actually address the financial problems in the country by voting them into office. It is a fantastic movement, that in the eyes of non-biased historians will be perceived as a model political movement.

PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Michael A. Nutter, telling marauding black youths “you have damaged your own race,” imposed a tougher curfew Monday in response to the latest “flash mob” — spontaneous groups of teens who attack people at random on the streets of the city’s tourist and fashionable shopping districts.
“Take those God-darn hoodies down, especially in the summer,” Mr. Nutter, the city’s third black mayor, said in an angry lecture aimed at black teens. “Pull your pants up and buy a belt ‘cause no one wants to see your underwear or the crack of your butt.”
“If you walk into somebody’s office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won’t hire you? They don’t hire you ‘cause you look like you’re crazy,” the mayor said. “You have damaged your own race.”

I'm sure that will happen here at some point, one of the reasons the UK is in such turmoil is it’s citizens are unarmed. They are buying baseball bats online from the US to protect themselves. They probably also involve black/hispanic racial tension which is really fierce in the inner city.
The worst part about it is what happens to the kids of people who have brought them here illegally.

I talked to a friend of mine the other day who is trying to get a green card for his wife from a middle eastern country. He complained to me (and rightly so) that it was impossible to get anything done without a headache for him when he dealt with the US bureaucracy. He thought it was because of his country of origin (though he is a citizen). I said "That's how you know you're an American", and he said "how?". I told him "You're ticked off at our inefficient, crappy bureaucracy. Can you believe that people actually want to expand the power and control of that friggin monster?" He laughed.
Most people who come here think that this is an America still defined by the constitution, when it has in reality become an America defined by regulatory agencies and the police powers that enforce them.

IMO when a mob is out of control like that the govt should use some lethal force to regain control. That is BS to let anarchists take to the streets like that. Whoever in charge over there can forget about it now. The people in England will be pissed the govt let this get out of control.

And you think having the cops (and the military?) going in, guns a-blazin', shooting first and asking questions later, will make the Brits happy with their government.
Damn, you can be stupid, but in this case, you're stupid^2.

I am fortunate to not have a run in with brutality - but I was detained road side for 2hrs:
The reason: I "fit the description", and I had bubble wrap.

What did having bubble wrap have to do with it?
I figure there was some break-ins in the area - but who knows. They grilled me on that for a while.
"Why do you have bubble wrap"
I helped a friend move.
"yeah, why'd he move?"
uhhh, cuz he hated Vegas.
"so what are YOU doing with bubble wrap?"
"I helped a friend move"
"From vegas?"
"Well, yes/no. He moved into his grandparents house for a few weeks till he found a place, and today was moving day to his new place"
"Where'd you get bubble wrap?"
"From his moving truck"
It went on and on...
Then they searched my car - put me back in the car - kept me there for 40min or so - then let me go.

Twitter refuses to close accounts of rioters to protect their 'freedom of expression'
Twitter has refused to close the accounts of London rioters who used the service to spread unrest and insisted that Tweets must 'continue to flow'.
The US-based company said that 'freedom of expression' was essential and that information would be 'kept flowing'.
Social networks have faced criticism for allowing rioters and looters to incite violence and public disorder across the country since riots began last Saturday in Tottenham.

The thing is we already know this guy is a full on douchenozzle, I don't think I want to be associated with him in any way shape or form - even if it involves catering to his clearly inferior intelligence and sense of fashion and taking his money in the process.

I just read up a bit on the man that was shot, that was a precursor to the riots:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Mark_Duggan
On 4 August 2011 Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old man, was shot and killed by armed police officers during an attempted arrest during a police operation in Tottenham, London, England. His shooting led indirectly to riots in Tottenham, which were followed on successive days by the 2011 England riots.
[edit] Interception and shooting
The Metropolitan Police stopped a minicab which was carrying Duggan as a passenger at about 18:15 BST on 4 August 2011 to carry out an arrest as part of a pre-planned operation, and shots were fired. Duggan was killed by a single gunshot to the chest. He was pronounced dead at 18:41 BST.[1]
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) initially said that it appeared a police officer had been shot, and police had returned fire.[2][3] It was reported that a bullet was found embedded in a radio worn by a policeman, and the implication was drawn that Duggan had fired on the police.[4] Friends and relatives of Duggan claimed that he was unarmed.[5] A loaded Bruni BBM blank-firing self-loading (semi-automatic) pistol, illegally converted to fire live ammunition, was reported to have been recovered from the scene.[6] It was reported on 10 August that later tests had determined that the weapon recovered from the scene had not been fired.[7] The Guardian reported that initial ballistics tests on the bullet recovered from the police radio indicate it was a "jacketed round", a police issue bullet, consistent with having been fired from a Heckler & Koch MP5 semi-automatic carbine, as used by the police.[8] It may have been due to a ricochet or overpenetration.[4][9] Police who shot Duggan were part of the Specialist Firearms Command (CO19), accompanying officers from Operation Trident, a London Metropolitan police unit which deals with gun crime in black communities.[10]

His family and friends claim he was unarmed and have demanded ‘Justice for Mark’.
But the man whose violent death triggered the Tottenham riots at the weekend makes an unlikely martyr.
On the streets of the Broadwater Farm estate, where Mark Duggan grew up, he was also known by another name: ‘Starrish Mark’.
It sounds like an innocent nickname; it was anything but. In fact, the word ‘Starrish’ denoted his membership of a notorious ‘crew’ called The Star Gang who strut the streets of London’s N17.
The stock-in-trade of such ‘postcode’ gangs is violence, intimidation and, more often than not, drugs.
Duggan himself, according to some residents, was a crack cocaine dealer who routinely carried a gun.
