The Dolphins intensified their efforts to trade for Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton to be Miami's new starter in 2011, and reportedly are the clear-front runner to acquire the seventh-year pro.

But Orton's $8.8 million salary is a road block. The Dolphins are deciding if it makes sense to squeeze Orton, 28, in under the $120.375 million salary cap or to restructure his contract. At least someone's reporters are working tonight.

Are there even any Broncos reporters out there anymore?

Nobody knows anything about the team outside of basically what Schefter is reporting.

I don't know why Miami, or any team for the matter, would want Orton.

The other issue is pairing him up with Marshall, who doesn't care much for Orton's abilities. Marshall; “Wait, Coach, you mean this will get me suspended? I just thought I was mailing it in at Kyle Orton’s performance level…”. Though statisticians, Miami homers and DPost's Klis may cluck about the productivity when they played in Denver, like Orton's numbers the past few years it's a fluke caused by a crappy team throwing out of necessity.

Marshall is a baller for any QB that throws it his way and Miami is better off without Orton, who isn't any better than two of their other QBs: Thigpen (who Marshall preferred over Henne) and Brandstater (who looked better than Orton in Denver).

Because he's actually the best QB that is/was on the market?

Orton > Kolb
Orton > McNabb
Orton > Jackson
Orton > Hasselbeck
Orton > Bulger
Orton > Leinart
Orton > Gradkowski
Orton=Palmer (But he's technically not on the market)

There's a WHOLE lot of stupid in these Miami fan comments:

Sure hope this does not happen. Young has more upside AND comes without giving up draft picks or costing as much cap space.
Oregon Dolphin fan

"19 interceptions against 15 touchdowns as the Dolphins finished 7-9.

Orton has thrown 41 touchdowns against 21 interceptions in his past two seasons with Denver. "

Not really fair to compares a 7th years vet last 2 years to a rookies first 2 years with only one as the full starter.

I bet phins wait for Orton to be cut tomorrow rather then give up picks for a soon to be cut player
corners

Thsi is BS- we don't need Orton this bad at all! Sign a veteran like Bulger and let Heene play - Henne is his second year forr cripes sake. Talk like Orton is dan Marino. Sign better playrs around Henne and the team will be better. This is BS
BC

It's simple, sign ronnie and ricky one more year!
bond, david bond

the dolphins brass is like a dog chasing it's tail when it comes to finding a qb.
mike

Please do not get this team killer... If they allow Henne to play, he'll be okay. The Dolphins only asked him not to lose, never asked him to win. BIG difference.
Yamajasti

Getting Orton after the Broncos release him is ok, but trading good draft picks and a good DL to have him and have to pay 8 mil seems like the wrong way to go. I'd rather keep the picks, the DL, and the cap money.

There's a lot of confusion and no official announcement from the Broncos as far as I know, but here's a good article on the matter, probably comes from the same post you mentioned. This is the most detailed and thoughtful analysis so far that I've seen:

Its just fluctuates from 20+M to over by 5M! Its usually something agreed upon by now but im confused. Should I be mad Denver isn't spending or should i be happy we are cutting fat (Gaffney)?

I think I would agree with that. I know some here don't care for Orton and that's their opinion, but the fact that you have a team wanting to bring him in as their starter really shows everybody the facts. He's a lagit QB. He's not the most mobile guy but he does alot of other things well. If he was crap, you wouldn't see anybody trying to get him.

I just wish we had some details on what the heck was being offered for him.

I disagree. He's just fool's gold. McD and his system made Orton vastly overrated. Without that I doubt these people would desire him. NFL people are just desperate, too.

It's the same way people thought Orton would be worth playing over Tebow last year. That turned out to be an epic waste of time. All Orton did was put up meaningless numbers and his lack of aggressiveness and play making ability emboldened opposing offenses damaging his own defense. This is why Orton's seemingly efficient numbers are such fool's gold. Especially since McD's offense was designed to carry the team and didn't under Orton.

Sure Orton was pretty bad in 3rd down situations but to call him fool's gold or junk is a stretch. His numbers would have been better if we had a decent running game behind him and our OL wasnt exactly top notch in 2010. If the system has him throwing and he is connecting, then a team will want him. Now if he completely failed at that, I would see your point. Give Orton some room to throw, able to hand off on 3rd and 3 and receivers that can catch and he will be all right. A team will want him enough to improve.

Orton is the definition of a game manager. There's only a handful of games where he was the primary factor in us winning or losing. He just goes along with the flow. Unfortunately, Denver sucked. I still think Detroit would have been the perfect team for Orton, but Stafford messes that up.

Orton can't pass down field. If you can't pass down field it gums up your running game. It makes the job of the opposing defense extremely easy. Orton also can't take punishment. So you need a stellar O-line to protect him. If not you really have no chance. So in essence he is juts a role player. That means he isn't valuable. You could have a lot of QBs fill that role.

Exactly.. this is also why he is very smart though. By never taking any risks he makes it so he can't be benched.

It's brilliant in a way.. but also diabolically evil and manipulative. But he will make a lot of money that way... and he will have a huge string of delusional (that think he is great) and disgruntled fans.

That was because of McD's system, the good receivers he had AND the fact teams dared him to do what he doesn't want to do - throw down field. Defenses make players/teams do things they don't want to do. That's sports 101.

What has to happen more:

A) Denver moving Orton, opening the door for Tebow and getting cap room
B) Miami getting a QB upgrade over Henne, after publicly pursuing Orton?

I think it's B. Miami has basically just told the world that Henne isn't good enough...heck, a lesser QB would demand a trade in that situation. Also, it will be tough for the Dolphin mgt to convince their fans that they want to win now, after admitting the QB isn't what they need...IMO they need to make this work now more than we do.

NO ONE in the NFL ALLOWS you to throw downfield. That is suicide as a defense. Teams play shell coverages to protect specifically against a team who can throw the ball downfield. Orton throws a great intermediate ball, no one wanted to let him pick up 15 yards automatically ROFL!

Another thing worth considering is that Ireland has a lot at stake in picking the right QB. He could ultimately lose his job if he passes on Orton and picks Bulger and then Bulger plays like he did for the last several years in St. Louis. Orton at this point, is a little more of a known commodity, is younger, and is safer in that its easier to explain in retrospect. In other words, if Orton doesnt work out, Ireland will have an easier time explaining why he went after Orton since Orton made the most sense at the time.

The sad reality is that Orton is a better QB than Cassel and costs a whole lot less.

No, he's not.

No, it's not. Most of those dudes are 1st round busts, and got paid a lot more than orton, who will garner value for the broncos upon his departure.

In related news you are fat and stupid and have TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND POSTS on an unofficial board of a team YOU AREN'T A FAN OF.

Strong life, bet you do well with the ladies.

The book was written on Orton when you got him...everyone knew what he was.

And yet your idiot front office still gave him big money and now it's holding up a trade. ROFL!

That's vastly different from giving slotted money to a player you know nothing about as far as his NFL abilities.

Yes, a stopgap for the Broncos. Hence his 2 year contract guaranteeing only 5 mil. lmao @ 'big money'.
You are a moron, and it's accurately reflected in all of your 25,000 contributions here.

Again, strong life.

ROFL!

Don't ****ing come off like that. Half this place thought he was leading Denver to playoff wins.

And don't get me started on what you all thought about him after his first season. ROFL! Hoo boy! You all thought you had struck gold.

Are you suggesting Orton is a better QB than Brandstater, Quinn or Simms? I never thought so.

Are you suggesting that you're smarter than a third grader? A tree? That rock outside my window?

I never thought so.

sorry for the misunderstanding, I get it now, you just come off as a flaming jerk when you say stuff like "you guys are going to be sorely disappointed when tebow stinks it up." but on the inside, you are a real fan too. :egbgb:

The other long-running Chefplanet gag is the one about KFC not making it back to the SB in 41 years.
