I was hoping for Berry, too. Oh well. Hill sure could blow people off the ball in college, but the obvious question will be if he can do that in the NFL at only 5'8".

Yeah, his size will be a bit of a problem, but he can definitely run block. Should be an interesting camp with him and Larsen. They prolly will keep at least 2 FB's since we're probably going to be more tradtional formation wise.

good idea to get some DTs since the NFL free agents once signed can't get on the field until the full CB is officially ratified (possibly not for a few weeks) according to Rick Eisen on the NFL network.

Nick Bellore, LB, Central Michigan is a player I forgot about.

He is an UDFA who will sign and stick with a team.

I pointed out Frank Zombo from Central Michigan last year and he made an impact with Green Bay.

Neither Zombo and Bellore had great workout numbers, but both work their ass off and are true football players.
Looks like we picked him up. Let's hope you're right again.

Jerod Mayo's little brother, according to Lindsay Jones

0/05/09 - CAA OCT 5 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Deron Mayo, DL, Hofstra, played a vital role in Hofstra’s upset win over No. 7 James Madison, 24-17, Saturday in Hempstead, N.Y. Mayo, a Hampton, Va., native made nine total tackles including a team-best six solo stops in the victory. The junior posted three tackles for a loss of 15 yards and had a sack for eight yards midway through the fourth quarter which helped preserve a 21-17 Hofstra lead. Mayo and the Pride defense limited the Dukes to just 192 total yards of offense, and only 56 through the air. - CAA football

If you were really expecting some UDFA DT to come in and make a difference, THAT would be sad.

The point is that they can't keep (credibly) saying, oh we don't like this kid, or we don't like that kid. You HAVE to start getting some young talent in the system at DT. All of these prospects are flawed to an extent. Other teams are drafting these DT's, and given what we've gone through recently, it strains credulity to suggest that we know better than the rest of the league. We don't know ****. It's the job of the staff to coach up a flawed prospect. I'd much rather see them AT LEAST TRY and get some DT's in the mid rounds and then add a couple UDFA DT's and hope that maybe the staff can actual earn a paycheck and make at least one or two of these guys something other than terrible on gameday.

Rather, we're sitting back and putting all our eggs in one basket, and we'll be forced to significantly overpay for a guy like Mebane just because we have to have him. That's stupidity defined. Beggars can't be choosers and make no mistake, this franchise is a beggar. There are dozens of college teams that have better DT's than we do. We absolutely should have gotten one of...or actually ALL of the prime UDFA DT's...if it takes another 100k, so be it. It's not a big deal, that's not alot of money (unless your a cheapskate...like Bowlen). We have nothing in the pipeline and are guaranteed nothing in FA when the bullets start flying, esp when you have teams like Tampa Bay and Cincinnati who are legally COMPELLED to spend huge sums of actual cash to get up to the salary floor.

Denver is playing a dangerous game that is going to result in more suckitude unless we wake up and get it going at that position.

Fannin profile ... hmmm fumbling

10/01/2010 - 5 MOST DISAPPOINTING PROSPECTS THROUGH SEPTEMBER: RB Mario Fannin, Auburn: I touted Fannin as much as anyone heading into the season as a potential breakout star and while I still maintain that he has talent, there is no denying that he's again struggling this year with the issues (injuries, fumbles) that had sidetracked him in the past. Part of a rotation for the Tigers, Fannin had seven touches for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the opener againt Arkansas State. Since, however, the Auburn coaching staff has apparently lost faith in his ability to get the tough yards and hold on to the football, as he has accumulated only eight touches for 28 total yards (and no scores) since. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com
Full Mario Fannin News Wire
Overview
Fannin has been a quality part of the Auburn backfield for four years. As an NFL Draft prospect, Fannin is a bit of a RB/FB 'tweener, clearly with the ability to run the ball hard between the tackles, but also blocking ability close to fullback caliber.

The ideal fit at the next level for Fannin would be a scheme that uses fullback/running back hybrids, especially on passing downs.

Analysis
Positives: As a running back prospect, he is stocky, powerful and fast. Blocks well enough for fullback consideration. Runs low and hard between the tackles, keeps legs moving, gets yards after contact. Has the speed to break long runs. One-cut-and-go runner. Decent receiver out of the backfield. Excellent pass blocker. Healthy and durable.

Negatives: Lost starting job for fumbling problem, playing mainly fullback for the second half of senior season as a result. Not very elusive. Slow cutting and turning. Rarely makes defenders miss. Doesn't have great vision. Doesn't show great hands as a receiver, and will drop easy passes. Was never "the guy" for Auburn, and didn't get to 500 yards rushing in any of four seasons.

Oh, i completely agree with you, but I dont think this (undrafted FA) is the sword you want to fall on in regards to that argument.

I think the UDFA round simply demonstrates the continuation of the theme. We're not in a position where we can ignore any mode of DT acquisition. It's clear we're now going to basically hang our hat on one guy in FA, its an all or nothing proposition. If Denver fails to land the big stud, or the big stud gets hurt, or if he's a stiff in Denver, there's nothing to fall back on. Nothing. Like investing in a couple mid round prospects, the UDFA round could have at least created some kind of depth. As it stands now, unless things work out perfectly in terms of talent evaluation, contracts and injuries (re: those one or two guys they sign at the spot), Denver is going to be in a world of hurt against the inside run game.

That's just really poor planning and an inflexible ideology.

Your points taken, i just think this is more symptom than the actual problem (which is ignoring it in the early rounds of the draft). That said, i bet we hang our hat on two guys.

Love, love, love the Nick Bellore signing -- was one of my favorite players in the draft this year.... below is his bio that I posted for the OM Mock Draft:

Nick Bellore, ILB, Central Michigan
http://www.cm-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/jwm_NickBellore_a.jpg

Player bio from CBS Sports: (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1244136)

Overview
Bellore is not the biggest, and definitely not the fastest, linebacker in the draft. But not many pro prospects have been as consistently productive (472 career tackles) as this Central Michigan product. Bellore immediately asserted himself as the team's best option inside, starting all 14 games as a freshman and setting a first-year record with 102 tackles. As a sophomore co-captain, he was the team's Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-MAC selection, a trend that continued throughout his career. He notched three straight 100-tackle seasons and started his first 51 games, another team record, before lingering ankle issues ended that streak in 2010.

He will not wow scouts with measurables, and his frame appears to be maxed out, but Bellore is a hard-working, relentless tackle machine and leaves CMU as the school's third all-time tackler with 472. His lack of speed and range makes him a poor fit as the only linebacker in the middle, but his high-motor and outstanding effort could earn him a few late looks as an inside 'backer in a 3-4 system and promising special teams player.

Analysis
Strengths: High-effort, high-motor player who seeks contact and works to the whistle. Possesses great instincts and diagnoses plays quickly. Has a nose for the football and seeks the ballcarrier out in traffic. Extremely productive and is an underrated straight-line athlete. Solidly built and steps up to fill the hole with nice leverage and balance. Has enough of a base and displays the lower-body strength to hold up at the point of attack. Flashes adequate awareness in zone coverage.

Weaknesses: Undersized and carries a maxed-out frame. Does not break down and wrap up in the open field and often has to dive at the ballcarrier's feet. Lunges and misses when attempting to make tackles away from his frame. Is a below-average athlete who won't be able to run sideline-to-sideline with NFL backs. He lacks the speed to recover once beaten and will overcompensate, losing his balance when changing direction. Chops his feet and wastes a step attempting to break on the ball. Lacks tenacity as a blitzer and gets caught in the fray at the line. Allows blockers to get into his body and will not use his hands to disengage.

Career Notes
Started first 51 consecutive games of his career … second longest streak in school history … started 52 games in his career, which is tied for the most in school history … ranks third in CMU history with 472 total tackles … 24 career 10-tackle games … three consecutive 100-tackle season … just the sixth player in CMU history to earn All-MAC first team honors in three different seasons … selected to play in 2011 East-West Shrine Game.

2008 Season: Co-captain … All-MAC first team selection … named CMU's defensive player of the year and most valuable linebacker … led the MAC and ranked fourth nationally with 11.4 tackles per game … collected at least 11 tackles in 10 games … matched a career high with 16 stops against both Eastern Illinois (8/28) and Eastern Michigan (11/28) … collected 11 tackles and forced two fumbles in win at Ohio (9/13) … second forced fumble at Ohio occurred at the CMU 1-yard line and resulted in a touchback with 3:09 remaining … tallied 14 tackles against Buffalo (9/27) … made 13 stops against both Western Michigan (10/18) and Toledo (10/25) … made 13 tackles and recovered a fumble in the Motor City Bowl (12/26).

Mark Dell is interesting. A nice deep threat for the team with some serious YPC.

Fannin is not a bad rookie runner, especially considering what we have. Could easily be a #3 back to get some reps once we sign another 1(B) veteran to go with Moreno. Other than that, whatever.

None of the other guys stand a chance.

I think the new CBA actually limits the amount that can be offered to UDFA.

Haven't watched Dell play at all besides that short clip...doesn't look like he gets ANY separation and was typically tackled right at the catch. He looks like a big guy, hope he can make some plays during TC and preseason. Excited to see what Fannin can do, looks like a tiny tank.

No Shiiiiiiiit! The kid also runs a 4.38 (that's right...speed baby). He was hidden by Cam "fig" Newton.

I think there's some truth to this, but I think it's also as true that he lost interest/focus by being an underling, and lacked the effort needed to make the coaches utilize him.

It's undeniable that he has some potential, but as an UDFA he's going to have to prove he doesn't curl up into a ball when he's asked to earn everything he gets.

Hence my point a few weeks back that they are going to try to generate pressure from the LB spot a few weeks back, and maybe go DL heavy next year.

At some point they have to have TC bodies that can play DT right? It appears they are going to either draft Orton for a DT (or picks they can use to trade for a DT) or bust the bank on FA DT's. I can't see them going through the year with the 3 guys they have on the roster now.

If they are going to truly neglect the DT position this year I hope they at least ask Ayers to bulk up and move him inside, he would be a better run clogger inside than from DE position.

The guy averaged well over 5 yards per carry at Auburn. Seems to me he just never got many carries. If he's fumble prone as many are claiming that probably explains why he never got much of a chance a lot more than the notion he "can't run for ****".

Bolded another new name. Only noticed because it was another DT.

If JaTarvis goes to the SeahawksI hear they're finalizing talks that would send McNabb to the vikings...

Overall I think it's a good haul. Would liked to have seen more beef at DT, but I imagine it will get done through FA signings \crosses fingers

Harris move turned out thus far! Let's hope a couple more names on this develop.

You can say that again. Is any of the others still with the team?

Sylvester's the only other one "on the team". Weber, Goodwin and Grant are PS. Dell and Fannin are IR.

Otherwise, no.

Harris has been a very good pickup

Harris is already one of my favorites on D for his great open field tackling.

Anyone know the status on Larsen's injury? Are we going to see Sylvester this Sunday?

I really liked both Fannin and Dell, they were impressive in camp.

Unfortunately, looks like Nick Bellore has changed his mind and signed with the NY Jets.... Dammit!

Looks like we really missed out on Bellore....

I hope Dell gets a long look at camp this summer. He was a stud for Sparty.

Fox seems to like him, so I'm sure he will.
