So, it's done. The negotiating teams for the players and owners have reached a new collective bargaining agreement, a player source tells me. It's over.

Players are flying to Washington to vote on it. But it will pass.

"It's done," one player source said. "We have an agreement. Now we just have to vote."

Finally, some definitive, good news.

this nightmare is over tomorrow. vote and press conference tomorrow, free agency wednesday, camp opens wed or fri.

Football is back

Where did it go? I seem to remember last season, and then the Super Bowl....They had a draft in April, players will be at Dove Valley in July, NFLX in August and real games in September.

Much ado about nothing and anyone who thought games would be missed to the tune of billions of dollars needs their head examined.

Yeah, and not to mention this little thing of "re-certification as a union", which is the only way to actually approve a Collective Bargaining Agreement.

And, the fact that the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the NFL have to notify the judge in the case that they have dropped the lawsuit.

All that's gonna happen tomorrow is the player reps will vote to either accept or reject a "proposed CBA". This is far from a done deal.

Agreed here. I know some people here are truly football 24/7 365, and that's great, but nothing of relevance has been missed, nor was it ever going to be missed. This was never worth getting worked up about. I always found that odd, the people who got so mad over this.

And no, the HOF Game is not relevant.

That's true but I did miss free agency in March. I also Missed OTA's. Basically I got none of the usual tidbits that help to tie me over until the games start up again.

The thing that we did miss was the natural flow of free agency. Its going to be a free-for-all. How that works out for or doesnt work out for the Broncos is up in the air at this point.

The Broncos, more than most teams, need to hit a home run or two.

No...the lockout made it impossible for me to go this year since I would have needed to give my boss at least about a month's worth of notice for a specific week I wanted to take off. Couldn't do that without knowing when camp would definitively start.

It may allow the Broncos to dump a lot of players. There is potential for a lot of movement and for us to really remake our team.

It looks like we have a lot of dead money on the books this year. But Kyle Orton and Brian Dawkins have a lot of money on the cap right now as well. Restructure Dawk and deal or release Orton and you have freed up about $10m right there.

I also suspect they will be dealing with DJ Williams. I think it's 50/50 right now that he'll remain on the team. If they can restructure his contract he'll stick, if not they may look to trade him... I don't think he'll stay on this team at his current salary.

Von Miller is going to get about $30-35m, over 5 years with about half of that guranteed. Franklin and Moore about 12m over 4 years. So that will take up that $10m in a hurry. I don't see anyway we don't have a few more players that are cut from this team... some of them will be some guys we don't expect. DJ Williams is my darkhorse cut for that reason.

Yeah...I don't think Fox is stupid enough to give away a premier WLB just to save like 2m or something. I think DJ's actual salary this year is only like 4.9m (cap number may be a bit higher like around 6), but I don't see what's problematic about either of those numbers. He's a top tier 4-3 WLB, so what's the problem? That's not exactly a massive salary. If they ask him to take a significant pay cut, I would hope he would tell the team to **** off and force them to release him. There's no basis for it. Go ahead and try it FO...we'll see who's laughing then when they won't have a single experienced player starting at LB.

I think they'll get most of their savings by trading Orton and also by either releasing Dawkins or having him take a big haircut. They can probably clear 10-11 million just with those two moves. A few other tweaks and they'll have some room to get Mebane and maybe 1 more decent player.

John Fox was asked the question around draft time. Now that they can see where they are at in terms of the Salary Cap, anything and everything is on the table.

I know he is SoCal's boy, but I don't think he has done anything over the past four or five years to make the team think he is worth that kind of money. He isn't a premiere player, but he is paid like it.

Also, the money saved in the Orton and Dawkins 'deals' will be enough to sign our draft picks. We are currently about $1m under our cap (if you believe what Leggy and Schaefer say). The Broncos have the ability to 'borrow' up to $3m (I believe that is the number this first year) from next year's cap. They may decide to do that as there is some dead money on the cap this year.

IMHO...I dont believe they are mutually exclusive terms. He's objectively a premier 4-3 WLB. The two years he played that position, he had outstanding seasons (2004, 2008 pre injury).

Anyway, as I've mentioned above, if they ask him to take a significant haircut, I hope he tells them to **** off and release him, instead. I don't think Fox is that stupid, though.

just because he is head and shoulders above any of our other LBs doesn't make him premier at his position, just that he's better than his teammates, which isn't saying much considering our talent pool on defense over the years...

i like DJ, and i really hope he remains, but he's never been voted to any pro bowls or even sniffed an all pro team to my knowledge...his stats certainly don't show of a premier talent either...i am just being honest, he hasn't shown to be a premier WLB to this point but i believe he still can be one...there is time left, he is a great athlete...

Broncoman13

Sorry bud, I'm not trying to take digs at DJ. I think WLB is his most natural position and I think he can be above average at the position. Maybe he gets a year to see how he can be integrated in Fox's style of defense.

I just see a lot of roster trimming coming. They are going to add a lot of players over the next couple of weeks. That money (or available cap space rather) has to come from somewhere.

DJ isn't the problem. He is talented, but is he talented enough to overcome the fact that they need $ to pay free agents?

I get that they need to open up room for FA and also the draft class. I think they'll be able to open up a decent sized amount of room with Orton and Dawkins and also using that 3.5m exemption. While there should be some other roster trimming, one must also evaluate whether the benefits of each individual move outweigh the potential costs. I don't see any market-based reason to justify asking DJ to take a significant cut in salary from 4.9m. If he were on the open market, he would probably be able to get that and maybe more. If they don't believe that, then they can take that gamble. If they feel alright going into the season without a single experienced starter at LB, that's fine too, but I certainly would hope he turns down any requests for a significant salary decrease. It's unwarranted and its not his job to keep taking one for the team every year. Enough is enough. I hope he rejects any such request. There's nothing to negotiate. I'm not going to support the team making stupid moves...again. We're 4-12 because some of this fanbase were blind, militant cheerleading homers (I'm not talking about you, others rather) and that got us a nice seat in hell for two years. There's nothing this FO has ever accomplished, so there will be no honeymoons, no presumptions of correctness, no nothing. I'm not going to support their stupidity. You make cuts that make sense in the big picture. That's it.

So that's why we lost those games. ROFL!

Anyway, DJ'S contract is only slightly more than Eric Winston's (right tackle of the Texans), so it's not like it's an exorbitant contract. In fact, with the new CBA more money should be going to vets and less to rookies, so it may be a bargain contract.

I stoked for some football... Crazy how the restricted free agent thing could work out.

Take Harris for example. We could make him an offer, have him practice for a couple of weeks... install the offense with him as the starter at RT, and then have a team like the Chefs or Raiders offer him a nice contract and he bolts on or around Aug. 12. So now you have a player with knowledge of the system going to a rival and also taking away the player that received all of the reps.

Kind of weird how long of a window they left there.

Why would any player practice with a team before a contract is agreed to? I have trouble believing either side would agree to that. If the player is injured the team could pull the offer. The team would have the concerns you just listed.

NFL players unanimously approve CBA

Representatives from the 32 NFL teams voted unanimously to approve a new collective bargaining agreement after a lengthy conference call Monday afternoon.

The player reps approved the 10-year agreement after the executive committee, who met here at the NFL Players Association headquarters, gave its approval. The CBA can’t fully ratify the agreement until the NFLPA recertifies as a union, which will likely take place by Wednesday.

“Big smile! Footballs back, footballs back,” NFLPA’s Domonique Foxworth said on Twitter.

The updated timeline for league business:

• Monday: The NFL will announce that teams can go to 90-man rosters and the official free-agent list will be distributed to teams.

• Tuesday: Trades can commence. Teams can reach agreements with rookies and undrafted free agents beginning at 10 a.m. ET. Teams can reach agreements with all free agents and signed players are allowed to enter team facilities.

• Wednesday: Players can begin reporting to training camps 15 days before their first preseason games. According to the proposed timeline, 10 teams would report on Wednesday, 10 more on Thursday and 10 additional teams on Friday. "We care greatly about the special relationship we have with our fans, and it was our responsibility to resolve this matter and return football to the field. The loyalty of our fans, in particular our season ticket holders, has been truly remarkable during the last few months.

"We are all excited in advance of the 2011 season and are looking forward to a successful year of Broncos football."

The concocted drama known as the "NFL Lockout" comes to an end--unsurprisingly, in time for all parties involved to continue making money, and the NFL was able to only boost its own exposure due to media attention, most of it relatively neutral

A 50% discount from last year's #2 pick (roughly).
