View Full Version : Rum Suggestions?

Just checking out the state of everyone's liquor cabinets.

I have really been into fresh Mojitos lately (especially since mint grows so well in the summer). I have been making an awesome watermelon mojito using frozen chunks of watermelon instead of ice.

Anyway, I ran out of my really tasty rum I got in Belize (One Barrel Rum). I've got to go to the liquor store this weekend to replenish and thought would ask for suggestions. No Bacardi or Captain Morgan crap, I want a good mellow rum (possibly a spiced rum) with great flavor. The One Barrel I just polished off was very smooth, and had the smell/taste of vanilla. I would like to find something interesting like that, without spending $40.00 a bottle if possible.

Any suggestions?

I LOVE RUM!

Go for Sailor Jerrys. Its stronger than captain and cheaper! It tastes just as good too, maybe a bit more vanilla-ey. But its real close.

I used to only be a capitano guy, however now I usually buy Sailors. Stronger and cheaper work great for me.

I have heard the Krakken is a pretty good rum too, with a hint of cherry instead of the vanilla, but I have yet to try it.

If the LQ does not have any of those, a decent cheap rum to get you buy would be Ron Rico...It works.

I'm more of a Whiskey, Gin, Tequila and even Vodka guy in favor of rum.

Ron zacapa is arguably the best rum you can get.

Goslings for dark and stormies

I like Ron abuelo too (dark as well)

The key with rum is the quality goes in the opposite direction of the rank of the name on the bottle.

Monarch < Admiral Nelson < Captain Morgan < Sailor Jerry

Not sure where The Kraken fits into this equation (animal less than sailor?) , but I had some a few weeks ago and it's pretty damn good.

Flor de Cana extra dry is a pretty good white rum for mojitos (not sure why anyone would want spiced rum in a mojito). It's about the same price as Bacardi Superior.

As I said in the OP, it started as a mojito, but then became a semi-frozen Wetermelon/Lime/Mint rum based drink. The rum I was originally used was One Barrel Rum (made in Belize). It didn't announce itself as "spiced," but definitely had a vanilla aroma. The only Rums I have tried that are similar in flavor declare that they are "spiced." It doesn't need to be heavily flavored, but the vanilla hue sure adds to the drink I created.

As I said, not a straight up mojito, but based on the same recipe. The Watermelon actually cuts out any sugar or simple syrups, so in a way - it's not as sweet which I like.

There is something about Sailor Jerry that makes sorority girls very easy. We're talking so easy it's annoying.

Mojito's are ****ing disgusting, even for Sam Axe.

But if you are going to go the rum route, there are plenty of fantastic options out there and the great thing about Rum, its ****ing Rum so it tastes good whether its premium or low quality.

I just bought a bottle of Myer's dark, but I also enjoy the Captain for a bit of a twist and Bacardi if I feel like getting ****faced (I mean the One FIfty One bitches).

I don't think you can go wrong with the Myers Dark. Pretty much the only rum I ever buy. It's a good smooth, sweet Jamaican spiced rum, but the spice isn't as heavy as Captain Morgan's-- significantly better, IMHO. And it's not brutally priced. I think it'd be great for mojitos.

Best bang for the buck rum is 10 cane at about 20 a bottle IMHO. However, the best Rums i have ever had are the Martinique rums. St. James and Neisson are available in the states but are going to cost $40 a 750ML.

Zacaya and The others Chris mentioned are very good too, but their also pushing $40 and If I am going to spend that Then I am getting the St. James or Neisson. Neisson is here:

I have had this before and it sips pretty well and is awfully mellow for being 84 proof or 42% ABV. Had to open it last night and give it a taste and it was all I remembered. Fantastically smooth for a Rhum, much better than my 10 cane which would be an ideal mixer instead of sipper.
