Pete Duranko, a star defensive lineman on Notre Dame's 1966 national championship team who went on to play eight years for the Denver Broncos, has died of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 67.

Notre Dame announced Sunday that Duranko died at a hospice in Windber, Pa., on Friday. He had battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for a decade.

Originally from Johnston, Pa., Duranko started at defensive tackle for the Fighting Irish in 1965 and '66. He had 73 tackles for the '66 team, which allowed only 3.8 points per game and had six shutouts in 10 games.

The next year he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL in the fourth round and the Broncos of the AFL in the second round. He went on to play defensive end and linebacker for the Broncos from 1967-74.

Pete Duranko and his brothers are legends in Johnstown football history. My parents grew up there and I was born there. ALS is a c***sucker of a disease, RIP Pete!

Before my time but sad when you die of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was on a great football team but I am sure Notre Dame wouldn't have been as good if they were in the SEC.

I guess I should be ashamed that I've never heard of Pete Duranko, but it (like BCJ said) was also before my time. However, I'll say RIP and condolences to the family...

Very sad, He is one of the few early Broncos who's name I know, those teams were so bad Pre-Floyd and SB XII that he had to be good to stand out this long.

RIP

Yep, the Bronco's had a pretty strong front four with Duranko, Costa, Smith, and Jackson.

They just never could find a QB.

Pete Duranko could play DT and DE. He was a tough, consistent player.

The Broncos didn't have a great defense during his time, 67-74. But the pass rush was always formidable: Duranko, Tombstone, Dave Costa, Paul Smith, Lyle Alzado, Barney Chavous and let's not forget Jerry Inman!

^ I just dont know about putting funny **** on a RIP thread for a former bronco. Betty Ford was off limits for me too. No other Pete's to put up there at least?

I agree that is all serious business.
