TerraDaily.com 07.05.2011http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Japan_groups_alarmed_by_radioactive_soil_999.html

-snips- "Soil radiation in a city 60 kilometres (40 miles) from Japan's stricken nuclear plant is above levels that prompted resettlement after the Chernobyl disaster, citizens' groups said Tuesday.
... all soil samples contained caesium exceeding Japan's legal limit of 10,000 becquerels per kilogram (4,500 per pound), they said. The highest level was 46,540 becquerels per kilogram, and the three other readings were between 16,290 and 19,220 becquerels per kilogram, they said.
...
The highest reading in the city of 290,000 people far exceeded the level that triggered compulsory resettlement ordered by Soviet authorities following the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine, they said. Kobe University radiation expert professor Tomoya Yamauchi conducted the survey on June 26 following a request from the groups. ..."

In line with findings of radiation being concentrated in whales, as they're the top of the food chain in an ocean contaminated by radiation, beef coming from near the F.kushima plant has been pulled for elevated radiation levels, but not after some were already sold on the open market.

"...The meat came from one of 11 cows shipped this month to Tokyo from a farmer in Minamisoma city ... The 11 cows all showed high levels of radioactive caesium, ranging from 1,530 to 3,200 becquerel per kilogram, compared with the legal limit of 500 becquerel ... But a Tokyo official said five cows from the same farmer in Minamisoma have already been sold into the Tokyo market on May 30 and June 30 ... ***ushima prefecture has checked radiation levels of the outer skin of all livestock shipped from areas near the troubled nuclear plant, and the 11 cows had cleared external inspections ..."

Run away you coward. But know this.

You can run but you cannot hide.

Even as you flee you will be breathing in hot particles.

NYTimes yesterday... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/19/world/asia/19beef.html?_r=1 ... had a piece about the extensive radioactive contamination in Japanese beef. Much worse than the dozen or so I mentioned earlier. The meat of the story (pun intended);

"... Now Japanese agricultural officials say meat from more than 500 cattle that were likely to have been contaminated with radioactive cesium has made its way to supermarkets and restaurants across Japan in recent weeks. Officials say the cattle ate hay that had been stored outside and exposed to radiation.
... underscoring the government’s inability to control the spread of radioactive material into the nation’s food. Radioactive material has been detected in a range of produce, including spinach, tea leaves, milk and fish. Contaminated hay has been found at farms more than 85 miles from the crippled ***ushima Daiichi plant, suggesting that the radioactive fallout has reached a wider area than first suspected. ..."

And an article today from another site... w w w .seeddaily.com/reports/Japan_bans_***ushima_beef_shipments_over_radiation _999.html (you'll have to copy/paste/correct the edited word to read)

"Japan on Tuesday suspended cattle shipments from ***ushima prefecture on fears of radiation-tainted beef in the country's meat distribution chain ... Around 650 beef cattle, including more than 500 from ***ushima alone, are thought to have been contaminated with radioactive caesium from hay they were fed before being sent to meat processing facilities across Japan since late March. ...
Hay stored outside is thought to have been contaminated by radioactive materials spewed by the ***ushima Daiichi nuclear plant in the weeks after it was hit by reactor meltdowns following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. ... On Monday, ***ushima officials said they detected up to 157,000 becquerels of radioactive caesium per kilogram in straw used at some farms -- about 520 times the government-designated limit. ..."

-snips- "A scare over radiation-tainted Japanese beef deepened Thursday with the number of cattle ... As many as 1,485 beef cattle in nine prefectures... The animals had been shipped to 45 of Japan's 47 prefectures as of late Wednesday, according to tallies by Jiji Press and Kyodo News ... Municipalities, including areas in Tokyo, have said that the affected meat has already been used in school lunches and sold at stores. The central government has banned shipment of certain vegetables, tea, milk and seafood from ***ushima and areas beyond including tea grown south of Tokyo. ..."
