View Full Version : 51st State? South California

epicSocialism4tw

Riverside County Supervisor Jeff Stone apparently thinks so, after proposing that the county lead a campaign for as many as 13 Southern California counties to secede from the state.

Stone said in a statement late Thursday that Riverside, Imperial, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, Kings, Kern, Fresno, Tulare, Inyo, Madera, Mariposa and Mono counties should form the new state of South California.

The creation of the new state would allow officials to focus on securing borders, balancing budgets, improving schools and creating a vibrant economy, he said.

“Our taxes are too high, our schools don’t educate our children well enough, unions and other special interests have more clout in the Legislature than the general public,” Stone said in his statement.

This is not news. People bring this up every 6 months or so, and have been for decades.

Not going to happen, but South California sounds lame.

Name it Nuevo California.

It happened in Western Virginia...

Granted, they seceded from a state that had seceded, but WVa had the same complaints about the rest of Virginia that Socal has about NoCal. Stranger things have happened.

Before California became a state the southern half of California wanted to become a state called Colorado. Where Colorado is now wanted to be called Jefferson and wanted to encompass 2/3 of Wyoming, New Mexico, all of Colorado and about a third of Kansas. Before that the Mormons wanted to set up an independent country, then a state called Deseret that would have had parts of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, NM, Arizona and a teeny bit of Nebraska.

Ah, history.

Without LA, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo, it should be called Mojave.
Maybe see if Yuma, Mojave and La Paz counties in Arizona want to join too.

What about water? Doesn't most of the so cal water come down the aqueduct? What makes that guy think they would still send it down without charging a ton more? Also by not including LA county in the split it would make a strange looking border.

Hmmm which state would be first, SoCal or State of Jefferson - they've been trying for years to get that going (Northern Cal + Southern Oregon). Wonder if that old barn off of I-5 still has "state of Jefferson" painted on it?

LA County area is the liberal part, Orange County all the way down to San Diego is pretty conservative, hence these areas want to split away.

Cali is much like any other state, the big cities are left, the rural is right. Most of the coast is liberal while the inland areas are conservative.

Not a good argument. Look at West Virginia compared to Virginia. That's not really an argument in favor of this idea.

That's why he's suggesting Inyo, Mono, etc........That's most of the Sierra Nevada range.

I'd be all for this if it included the coastal counties. In other words....Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, Tuolumine & Alpine counties would make up the Southern border of NoCal.

Here lies the problem. Years ago, Benjamin Wilson (As in Mount Wilson) wanted to seceed from Northern California back in the mid 1800s. We need their water and I doubt they will give or charge a huge rate for it. I would love the state to be divided. I would take mid California and everything east and south of Los Angeles. I would also take Long Beach if they wanted to go our way. Our new state would have less problems but would need to pay off the debt now in the state.

Considering the differences between Virginians and West Virginians, it made perfect sense to seperate the two. Same with Massachusetts and Maine, North and South Carolina and the Dakotas. If people in Southern California feel that Northern California no longer has much in common with them, why not become a state of their own. But we would need to add a 52nd state to make it even.

Puerto Rico, come on down...

Why add a state for the sole purpose of "making it even" and not an actual reason?

I was just curious why you said that. Maybe there is some law or something that I don't know about.

Because even is good. I never here anyone say "Odd Steven" it has always been "Even Steven". Only BroncoSteven would answer to the Odd Steven. Let us make the teams even never "let us make the teams odd". That is already in effect just go watch Women's basketball. You want your debts paid? You don't tell the bum "Odd Up!" or he might pull down his pants. Would you say, "The garage door is jammed or odd worse"? Seems it is now sticking out of your neck. You want to odd up the score? I already saw it and 59 to 14 vs the Raiders is what it came to.
Now go drink a Miller Lite (or was it Bud Light?).

I'm three beers in. That's an odd number. You're about 12 in. That's an even number. Even>Odd (in that case). You win.

There is a huge project hopefully taking off in LONG BEACH. First they found a way to access a bunch of oil in the LBC area. We always had a lot of oil but now they put some technology to it and will be getting a ton more. Also a big project might break sand by the queen mary. It will be a huge resort with 20 rides, 30 restaurants, bunch of stores and other goodies all sprawled out around the queen mary. We screwed up port Disney, which instead got built as calif adventure in anahiem, a huge loss to Long Beach.

Long Beach is the most diverse city in the nation. We have white, mexican, black, vietnamese, korean, chinese, straight, gay, lol! Hey just trying to include everyone! I think in 15 yrs Long Beach will be one of the coolest cities on the west coast. Still it's all about San Fran, LA, and SD but Long Beach catching up.

The oil companies came around planting sensors in our yrds. I guess the then set off charges somewhere and read the shockwave to the sensors to see what the rock and underground oil looks like etc etc.

They generally get added in pairs. I dont believe a law exists that states when the US adds states it has to do it in pairs. But Puerto Rico has been there for 100 years as a commonwealth/territory.

Makes sense.

LoCal would include our maner Baja and there is no way people will vote for that. 52nd state would be Canada.

Unless they plan on securing the border maybe we would be better off just invading mexico and turning it into a new state. Lots of natural resources, good beaches, there is some stuff to work with in Mexico. In fact they have all they need to be a world power, just never have been able to get it together.

Didnt know the person who proposed it was a liberal. Try reading it before commenting on it. I am sure the vast amount of conservatives want to split. Those few smart minded liberals here in Cali probably would love to split from the massive mistake too.

It takes a big boy to know when he is wrong. We do understand your reasoning though. All I need is for LABF to come in and tell us how wonderful the state has been run. There are democrats then there are liberals. Farther down the line is California liberals. A weird breed that embarrasses the Democrat party.
