After losing 2-1 to Mexico in the Conca CAF semi-finals, the USA faced a play-off against Italy from the Uefa group for a place in the finals. The two-legged game saw the USA win both matches 1-0 to earn a place in Germany. The key players are likely to be goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Abby Wambach. Upcoming striker Alex Morgan may also be a threat. Former Swedish international Pia Sundhage is the team coach. They have appeared in all five previous final stages, winning the tournament in 1991 and 1999 and finishing third the other three times.

i can't get into soccer. and then it is women's soccer which just adds a whole new level of lame to the sport.

it's like the WNBA, sure they try hard and understand the fundamentals, but when watching sports i shouldn't have the belief that i could outplay all 10 starters on the court. which i believe every time i see an WNBA game, because i know the fundamentals, try hard and unlike about 98% of that league, i can dunk.

Reasons to Watch by ESPN:

4. The U.S. jersey: Love it or loathe it

The designer, Nike, claims that the away jersey with its black bodice and red piping was inspired "by the beautiful but deadly Black Widow spider." Critics have been quick to deem it a "hot nurse" outfit.

If you succeed on that mission, you will then become just one of the millions of soccer fans out there now.
I won't watch it but good luck and don't embarrass the USA. Maybe highlights on any sports show and that is about it. How unfull is that stadium going to be unless Germany is playing?

Damn! How you describe it, if this happens, WWIII can be on its way. I hope the superpowers will be watching and stratagizing carefully. I am feeling another blietzkreig rolling into the Alsace-Lorraine region.

To be honest, women's soccer is one of the few women's sports that I do enjoy. The only sports where women's is superior to mens is: Tennis, Volleyball (Beach), Figure Skating, Gymnastics.

All else = lame

The list you have makes the women better than men but I would think those sports would be described or compared as just as exciting (or boring however you feel about the sport). I went to high school with one of the professional volleyball players (as of last year, 40 and still playing!) on the circuit and there is no letdown of excitement from either sexes.

Not sure about regular volleyball but 2 women beach volleyball has tight one piece so nothing is jiggling around. It is one of the sports where it isn't dumbied down because it is women participating in it. I know it is on FoxSportsWest a lot when it is in season.

Player ratings (1-10, 10 = best)

G Hope Solo, 7: Solo wasn't called upon often, but was sharp when she needed to be. Her save against Kim was top-notch.

M Lauren Cheney, 6: Did little to justify Sundhage's decision to start her over Megan Rapinoe in the first half. Often caught in possession and only clogged space when she got forward. She made no mistake with her header, though. Even on a day of struggles, she made the play that counted.

Clicky (http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/news/_/columnist/carlisle_jeff/id/6712444/women-world-cup-grading-us-performance-north-korea-jeff-carlisle)

I don't get why Solo only gets a 7 . I also thought Cheney played better than a six. Yeah her shots were right at the keeper, but she was the only one really getting any shots off in the first half.

Finally, I'm intrigued by women's soccer:

French female footballers strip off to provoke

With France set to face defending champions and hosts Germany at the women's World Cup on Tuesday, members of the French squad say they have posed naked for pictures to draw attention to their sport.
Juvisy forward Gaetine Thiney, 25, plus Olympique Lyon's Elodie Thomis, 24, and Corine Franco, 27, said they posed provocatively for the pictures which appear in Sunday's edition of Bild to spark controversy and generate publicity.
The trio posed for the pictures under the motto: "Is this how we should show up before you come to our games?"

Wow. Quite a day for the WWC. England choking on PKs after their goalie spots them a lead on the first shot (and yes, those girls choked 2 shots not even on frame). Then Japan not only pushing Germany the tourney hosts and favorites to win it all to overtime, but then winning it in stunning fashion with a quality goal. Very happy for the Japanese squad today as their country can use anything to boost their spirits right now. If the US women play flat and tank against Brazil tomorrow, I'll be pulling for the Japanese to win it all. Great game.

Rapinoe played her ass off the whole time we were down a man. That final cross was perfect, just perfect.

Hope Solo has cemented her place as the face of the US women's team. Be interesting to see how many endorsment deals roll her way after this tourney.

Morgan will be the future of this team. Look for her to be one of the big names going into the Olympics. Girl's got game (and being that easy on the eyes don't hurt).

even the US women's coach who is from Sweden alluded to this in her post game interview. She was obviously very emotional about the "grit" shown by her team and credited it as an "American personality trait"

Nothing like our women anywhere in the world. AMEN to that

Alot of these same things were said about our mens team last summer, who aren't the most talented team in the world (obviously) but do things that nobody expects them to do because of their "American personality trait(s)"

We should not take our freedom for granted. In these situations you see a microcosm of the self-determination and grit that it develops in our people and in our culture. Its that same set of traits thats going to pull us out of our economic malaise.

It's awesome that the world (those who are allowed to watch women playing soccer) gets to see that in our women. Its something to be very proud of. We forget, it was the women of our country who helped settle the plains in the pioneer days, and it was the women of our country who ran the factories during the World War. Our women have a record of generations of self-determination and grit.

In places around the world, some women aren't allowed to drive or to show their hair in public.

To them, even our women fight with more gumption and determination than most, and that must be quite offensive to the sensitivities of backwards nations everywhere. When the system is unfair, our women fight with the same grit that our men do.

Jealousy.

US women > most men around the world. Thank God for the United States.

You did notice the part where the entire stadium was openly rooting for the US after the bad calls, right? Like, there was a decent US fan contingent, but the Germans and whoever else were booing the hell out of Marta and chanting along to U-S-A in the dying minutes.

Germans are a very pro-American culture. They are much like the British in that regard. There were alot of American fans in there too. Americans who live in Germany because of the military commitment there are very proud of our soccer teams and regularly travel to games in Germany and in greater europe.

Brazil's play was shameful. Some of those calls were shameful. How sweet is it that we won because of time given from that bitch who faked that injury. Coming back from a goal down...going down 10 men. Talking about how the US never quits would feel tired and cliche if they didn't constantly show us examples of being winners.

the championship should be a parallel park off.

The games last too long now, why would you want to add an hour to it (and damage a ton of cars!)

I will admit it, they had the replay on last night and I started watching with 2 minutes before Extra time (seemed like a ton of this extra time. Is this for all the "injury " timeouts?). Knowing that we were down to 10 players and had the ball in the offensive area was pretty impressive. But, the blatant disregard for correct penalties (brazil's 2nd goal) and the obvious fake injury which always seems to happen in soccer is what pisses me off about the sport. Of course not enough scoring either (or shots on goal). Glad I watched it as I knew we won and I wanted to see how and why. Why? Because we aren't a bunch of quitters and show team/national pride. How? Because the players took the above and added in very good skills.
If you don't mind, I think I need to take a shower. I went from national pride to defending and admitting to watching girls soccer.

This LOL. The main reason for all the support our gals received in the later stages of the game stemmed from the BS the Samba Queens were pulling all game long. The Germans do not have any use for that style of game at all. Don't kid yourself into thinking that the support we received was due to an overwhelming love that Germany has for the US of A. Agreed to a point. I also think it has much to do with opportunity. Title IX was huge in the development and ascension of womens sports in this country. Mia Hamm and the rest of the 99ers are a direct product of that legislation. They, in turn, became the inspiration of a whole new generation of young women who have grown up with their own heroes and their own dreams. Good for them. It is truely one of the things that seperates us as a nation from the rest of the world. Our women are blazing a trail for other women all over the globe. With mass media being what it is, it will eventually transform all of it. I've seen Mia Hamm posters hanging on the walls of little girls in Saudi Arabia. It will eventually be what changes such backward thinking places like the fundamentalist countries in the Middle East into proper members of the 21st century. As a Marine who has been there, we knew then...and we know now that the key to changing that region is the little girls. Educate them, protect them, and in 2-3 generations we won't have to use force. They will change it from within themselves and that is the only way the change will be permanent. That is the main reason we are there and that is what we are fighting for in the long run.

It was kind of epic playing with 10 against 11 for most of the match and still winning in the quarterfinals of the World Cup. And then that Brazilian goalkeeper kept jumping over the line on the PK's. Solo stayed behind the line on all of Brazil's PK's.

Alright, I admit it, I get teary eyed every time I see the highlight of that great Rapone cross (with 3 brazilians closing in) that Wambach buried. That is just a fantastic display of skill and determination.

Also like how leading up to that when the Brazilian player loses the ball, she immediately turtles and the Ref looks back at her and play continues.

Until that moment, my favorite moment of the Womens world cup was hearing the announcer say of a Swedish player "She is really strong in the box".

Too bad soccer ref's continue to suck in an epic way.

Beautiful build-up to the goal. The backheel pass to start the run was perfectly paced, quality play. I've been pretty pleased overall with the defensive play by the US to this point. That was my biggest concern to this point. Solo looks totally focussed and into the game. Let's see another one by the US early in the second half, then I'll breath a little easier. France is a second half team, but that said...they haven't played a team yet with the level of fitness this US team possesses. Let's go girls, get 'em.

It can be hard to watch women's soccer at times. I'd rather the 2 garbage expansion teams in MLS. There would still be better striking and ball movement than what I'm watching right now.

Glad we're up at half, though. But the fact that we insist on passing the ball out of our back 1/3 rather than clearing it is frustrating. Just boot the damn thing to the Forward. Those that are forward are way better and faster than France's defenders. No team playing in this World Cup is good enough to keep trying to make 5 passes out of their half of the field.

We look a lot like our guys team--just kicking it around but unable to handle pressure and maintain possession for more than a couple of touches. Couldn't agree more. That was twofold.

I know, they have a history of playing very well against us. Just rewound the 3rd goal....wow. Nice play all around on that one. This was actually a very good game. I still say the French played very agressively after goal 2 by the US They had three shots on goal after our second. A couple of those were quality plays that just ended up slightly off frame. They won the EUFA Champions league title and played some beautiful soccer today. I'm glad we played them today as I think it will benefit this team in the final. France was a strong team that played some very creative soccer, they played a brilliant game....our ladies just played better.

Couldn't agree more. That was twofold.
1. She replaced a player that was routinely giving the ball away in our half of the field.
2. Her passing is fantastic (compared to everyone else on the field at least), great crosses as always with good ball movement.

I've been really impressed with her play this whole tourney. Not only is she delivering the best balls in the games, she is working her ass off when she is off the ball. Covering a tremendous amount of ground and really hustling back to help out in our own 1/3. She seems pretty cool as well, bit of the tough girl with attitude.

Heh, heh, heh....nice to know I'm not alone in my fandom. It's been pretty damned easy to get behind this team. They have a nice blend of "girl next door" and wiley vet. Rapinoe is so easy to pick up on the field with the shock/bottle blond punk cut. She plays with the same attitude, love it. Wambach has been a force the last three games. She really is the Captain (in every sense of the title/rank) of this team. I'm looking forward to this next game. Hope it is as entertaining as the last one. Go Japan! ( I lived/was stationed) there for 4.5 years (2.5 of it spent in the Gulf and Somalia). I love those peoples. Some of the sweetest, nicest, and most decent human beings I've ever had the privilege to share time with. I enjoyed my time in Japan emensly, it was one of the best times of my life and I have my Japanese freinds to thank for that. This game means Soooo much to the Japanese. I just hate to have to root against them in the final.

I am not sure how Carli Lloyd continues to start for this team. She has clearly been the weak link in the middle and outside of a pass on the first goal, didn't really have an impact on the game. That is, of course, unless you count her miss on a wide open goal.

Rapinoe has been just filthy good. How is she not starting? Not that I have a problem with her energy off the bench, but it costs me a lot of stress! lol.

Btw I love Hope's interview after the game: "I always knew we were going to win, we were going to win the whole time. I was never worried" and "We're just that damn good!"

Japan is playing inspired, but I just can't see how they can be competitive with the Americans. Wambach is going to TOWER over that defense. Rapione to Wambach is going to be in full effect. Buehler will be back which should really help stiffen the defense against the technical attack from Japan.

In the end the U.S. should win every single ball in the air. Barring a flat performance from the U.S. (think first half of North Korea) it *should* be a world cup for us:)

3-0 United States.

I think it would be a mistake to start Rapione. The U.S. gets so much punch when she comes in the game. She's the plug, wait to see where in the front the U.S. is struggling and insert Rapione for a HUGE shot of energy.
