I didnt forget and watched some good stuff on Discovery today. Many of those Vets are dying off at a fast rate as they are mid 80s and into their 90s. My grandfather wasnt there but he was still a WW2 Vet and unfortunately, his brother got shot down over the Atlantic and died before the US got into the War (my grandfather and his brother both from Canada). Greatest generation that I have known.

First one off the boat on dday was a 6'7" soldier sent into the water to see how deep it was...

Great read here.

D Day is top 5 favorite days in history...funny how it ushers in the summer every year as families take vacations to enjoy FREEDOM.

Being to the cemetery in Normandy was one of the most chilling moments of my life...pretty soon I imagine I'll start re-reading my Ambrose, Cornelius Ryan, Anthony Beevor (etc) books again.

Don't mean to jack the thread, but if anyone likes history as much as I do, you have to read the spy books by Ben Macintyre. Agent Zigzag especially.

Where did you get the aerial view of pointe du hoc? Did you tour the monument there?

I took the PDH pic myself during a fly past. Im a flyer in the USAF and had quite a few opportunities for fly bys at all the sights there. We normally do 2 ship formations and the French pretty much give up the airspace.

Us a couple of yrs ago buzzing Ste Mere Eglise...

Normandy is amazing. Hard not to be awed by being there.

Additionally, the National D-Day Museum here in Nola is first class. Well worth a visit (best happy hour in the City as well!).

I'd love to go and do a tour of the WW1 sites over to Flanders as well.
