So, I started doing this on Facebook, and thought it was fun. Since there is nothing going on right now, I thought it might be kind of interesting to do it here. And since there is some really crappy stuff in the main forum, I thought this could do nothing but improve things (so mods, please leave it here).

Here's the way it works. Each day for thirty days, there will be a new song topic. You simply post your answer to that day's topic in this thread. I will post each new day's topic as an update in this post, as well as a new post in this thread.

A few general guidelines:

1) Try and stick with the topic of the day, so that the thread stays fairly organized.

2) If you must post about a previous day that you missed, at least label your post with the day and topic about which you're posting.

3) If possible, post a video with your song choice.

4) If possible, give a brief justification of the choice.

5) I realize that this is subjective, and some subjects might be hard to narrow down to one song. But narrow it down, anyway. If you must list more than one, just post one video, followed by a list of "Honorable Mentions" - with the song artist and title only.

Make sense? Here are the topics. Remember, I'll update this post with a new topic each day:

Day One - Your Favorite Song
Day Two - Your Least Favorite Song
Day Three - A Song the Makes You Happy!
Day Four - A Song that Makes you Sad
Day Five - A Song that Reminds You of Someone
Day Six - A Song that Reminds You of Somewhere
Day Seven - A Song that Reminds You of a Certain Event
Day Eight - A Song that You Know All the Words to
Day Nine - A Song that You Can Dance to
Day Ten - A Song that Makes You Fall Asleep
Day Eleven - A Song From Your Favorite Band
Day Twelve - A Song From a Band You Hate
Day Thirteen - A Song That is a Guilty Pleasure
Day Fourteen - A Song That No One Would Expect You to Love
Day Fifteen - A Song That Describes You
Day Sixteen - A Song That You Used to Love But Now Hate
Day Seventeen - A Song That Takes You Back to High School
Day Eighteen - A Song That You Wish You Heard on the Radio
Day Nineteen - A Song From Your Favorite Album
Day Twenty - A Song That You Listen to When You’re Angry
Day Twenty-One - A Song That You Listen to When You’re Happy
Day Twenty-Two - A Song That You Listen to When You’re Sad
Day Twenty-Three - A Song That Inspires You/Makes you Emotional
Day Twenty-Four - A Song That You Want Played at Your Funeral
Day Twenty-Five - A Song That Makes You Laugh
Day Twenty-Six - A Song That You Can Play on an Instrument
Day Twenty-Seven - A Song That You Wish You Could Play on an Instrument
Day Twenty-Eight - A Song That Makes You Feel Guilty

Day One - Your Favorite Song

This one is almost impossible, because I, like most people, have so many favorites. But I love Elvis Costello, and the lyrics of this song are beautiful. So, I chose this one.

I will probably have to wait for day 2. Too hard to pinpoint to a favorite song. Maybe something from Depeche Mode, Oingo Boingo, Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran or something I need an hour and really think about it.
I do have some suggestions for topics. Fav song to keep rewinding, best song during high school, fav summertime song, fav song to hear at a sporting event, fav song to get laid to (or to get it in motion), favorite song to drum on your steering wheel (and not caring if you look like a fool) and songs that should be played at a sporting event (which I also thought I would make a thread but never have).

Favorite song? Rough question.

Some of the lines in this are just so truthful, so I'll put it here:

When you are looking at a video on YouTube, click "Share" below the video window. From there, click "Embed." Then highlight the text in the box that drops down, copy it, and paste it, as is, in a post on here. That should be all you need to do.

****'n love that one.

Had a friend (girl) in high school that when we'd reached that point that the relationship was over (with whomever we were dating) we'd play that song and turn it it up when it hit:

"She said you’re like a disease without any cure
She said I’m so obsessed that I’m becoming a bore, oh no
Ah, you think you’re so pretty!"

Some good choices. Some strange choices. Some choices that are very hurtful for the Congressman from New York.

Tomorrow will be Least Favorite Songs. Don't post them yet - we're still on favorites. But you can be thinking about it. I actually put more thought into least favorite than I did favorite. It's so subjective, when you start thinking about all the options - genres, decades, B-Sides, etc.

A few of the categories are stupid; some are fairly repetitive; etc - so I need to think of things to change them up. broncocalijohn had some good suggestions earlier in the thread. If you have any ideas, let me know. Hopefully, the lockout will be over by the time we get through day 30, and we can start counting down to training camp.

As I mentioned earlier, don't hesitate to name songs as honorable mention for each of these categories. To keep it simple, don't post videos to all of them. But it's kind of cool to remember old songs/learn about new songs. I had totally forgotten that James song, for example.

Tough pick... Blind Melon - Change

Shannon Hoon always reminded me of a brother-in-law that I had - a great kid who also died of an accidental drug overdose. My BIL had a doctor that was prescribing Oxycontin and Methadone in alternating months for chronic pain, and it was the Methadone that got him. I've always thought Methadone was sort of an evil drug. I've known probably ten people who have died of ODs in my life. All but one or two of them were from Methadone - either for pain management, or for heroin addiction.

Anyway, I always thought Shannon Hoon seemed like a nice kid. What a waste of a life.

You know, I prepaid for that damn album 2 years ago and your promise has fallen flat. Just tell us they broke up before even one song was put on track.

DEATHSicle is still in need of a Solo Guitarist, a couple percussionists, a B3 player in the style of Jimmy Smith, a B3 Player in the style of Prog Rock (think Rick Wakeman has a baby with Keith Emerson but with way better chops!), a Dobro player, 2nd Rhythm Guitarist, Gospel choir, vibraphonist, drummer, Keyboard player who has his own Yahama CS-80 and CS-80 repairman, 3rd Rhythm Guitarist who can double on 2nd Dobro, Mandolin player, Backup vocalist, Solo Lute player, Marimbist, Piano player with his own Bosendorfer Piano (Steinway will do in a pinch if he can play), Chapman stick Bassist, 12 String Guitarist, Rhodes Mk1 keyboardist, Korg Oasys player (must have his own Korg Oasys), Tenor Recorder and Alto Recorder players, Oboist who can play stuff from Moody Blues "Days of Future Past" type stuff, Melotron player with own Melotron and Melotron repair roadie, Moog MicroMoog player with Moog Tarus Pedals, Lead Vocalist (with range of Robert Plant or Geddy Lee), Timbala player, Takio Drummers, Sequential Prophet 5 and Pro-One player who also has a Korg Mono/Poly and Polysix keys is a plus, and an EMS "Putney" Synthi player who also can play the Thermin (Moog reissue or original).

All tryouts are being held in DEATHSicles basement.

Okay, let's start Day Two - Your Least Favorite Song!

There are so many options for this one. But how do you pass up a song, written by a creepy-looking 44-year-old man, that begins, "She's just sixteen years old; leave her alone, they said?" He might as well be singing it from a white, windowless van, with the words "Free Candy" spray-painted on the side. When he starts screaming in the middle, it's just icing on the cake.

In the video, I kept expecting Chris Hanson to walk out on stage and say, "Why don't you just have a seat over there?" Honorable mention goes to "We Built this City" (Starship); "He Called Me Bruce" (Rick Springfield); "Heartbeat" (Don Johnson); and anything by Michael Bolton.

And now, my least favorite song! Benn Mardonas - Into the Night

The first one was overplayed when I worked in radio, and I had to listen to it constantly on my "Bright AC" station.

The second one is overplayed now, a terrible song, and adding to the oversaturation is that Train has sold it out completely and the hook now graces advertisements for Samsung refrigerators.

I actually liked Drops of Jupiter. I liked Hey Soul Sister the first ten times I heard it - the last 900 times, not so much (and I don't even listen to the radio).

I did too, the first week I heard it. But when you're playing it every two hours in a 6-8 hour DJ shift, PLUS hearing it on the radio when you're out and about, it gets pretty old. Which is a shame, because Train as songwriters are very accomplished.

Hey Soul Sister bugs, really, because it just gets completely stuck in your head. The fact that it's not a good song just adds to that.

"Cab" by Train was a far superior song, and I loved "Meet Virginia" when it came out. "Mississippi" was on the Drops of Jupiter album, and is an excellent example of songwriting.

You probably don't like it because you've never heard is sung right. Try this one:

Now that I looked at that, I almost feel guilty having posted it - even in jest. She is frighteningly awful. At least with Hannah Montana, she didn't seem to take herself seriously enough to have felt comfortable doing something like this.

God bless America, where a person like Miley Cyrus can become wealthy.

How can you not like American Pie? It's a song commemorating the deaths of 3 of Rock & Roll's greatest stars (Richie Valens, Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper). It alludes to many of the greatest political and social events of the era in a very catchy and poetic way. It's a true classic and defined an age (not mine, I wouldn't be born for another 10 years when it was written). Of course everyone is afforded their own opinion but I've never heard anyone dislike American Pie who knew what it was about.

Not really a song, per se, but a jingle.

That Heineken commercial that ran incessantly on TNT during the NBA playoffs just about made me take aim at the TV with a 12-gauge every time it played.

That blond bimbo's "singing" voice sounded like a chihuahua getting corn-holed by Mickey Mouse.

Sometimes bad music is more than just bad music: It's a mockery of music, if you know what I mean.

The "commercial music" that instantaneously annoys me is the Cialis tune that plays the same irritating high-pitched note like 12 times before any other pitch is heard. My husband watches golf and that commercial constantly plays during golf tournaments... fortunately he knows to be quick with the "mute" button (a protest ensues if he's not).

Okay, we're to Day 3 now, which is a song that makes you happy.

There were, again, lots to choose from on this. Better than any other catalyst that I know, songs can immediately put you in a time and place. Thus, most songs that make me happy are actually songs that were playing a lot when I was happy for an unrelated thing.

This one is an exception. It was playing during a happy time of my life (summer after I graduated from high scouul), but it's also just a happy song.

Clint Maedgen's version of a Kinks song. Playing with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Shot in the French Quarter.

Midway through you see some of the members of one of Clint's bands, the New Orleans Bingo Show. I have seen him\them more times than I care to count. Fantastic, creative musician.

Sometimes covers can outshine the originals. This song and seeing some of my local bars in the Quarter will always make me smile when I am working on the road.

Day Four - A Song that Makes you Sad

A song that makes you sad - I love how music can take you back to a certain moment. With this, I had just gotten dumped by my longtime girlfriend, and I was just about to go on a Mormon mission (and I was a little overwhelmed with/scared of the prospect). I can't remember if it was on the radio a lot, or if I just bought the album - but I remember listening to it a lot. I thought my life was in a terrible spot. But really, it was just getting good.

Sorry, just catching up with a few threads. I always pay attention to these music threads, esp in the off-season.

Day One - Favorite Song
Iron Maiden - Die With Your Boots On
(Up the Irons!)

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/mMorZnGxhv4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Day Two - Least Favorite
Anything by George Michael, but especially "Father Figure" and "I Want Your Sex." The sleaze just oozes and drips off this man. I can't bring myself to actually post a video. I think my brain would explode.

Day Three - Happy
Ray Stevens - The Mississippi Squirrel Revival
(Hard choice between this and several others, but this one always makes me laugh.)

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/K16fG1sDagU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Day Four - Sad

(Changed my mind from my first choice)

Great song. Played at my dad's funeral, so it definitely brings me to a certain sad place. May not have listened to it all the way through since, actually.

<iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BnD6ojjA0OA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
With this one, the day we got the call that my dad had passed away, I was in the car with my mom, on our way to church, and this song came on the radio. Mom (who had divorced my dad 15 years prior) began to cry.
Maybe the saddest moment of my life. I think I actually felt my heart break, worse than any girlfriend or breakup... and it's not close.

<iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lWeagFLF9SY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Ever been run over by someone you loved? This is the perfect song. SO, so sad.
Oddly enough, found out about it through a comedy: HBO's "Bored to Death," which is brilliant and awesome incidentally, and has some of the best writing I've ever come across.

Day Five - A Song that Reminds You of Someone

One of the happiest days of my life was January 25, 1998 - the day the Broncos finally won a Super Bowl. That night, 9News in Denver kept playing this song, with highlights from the game. So, my person is John Elway. :) This is a slightly different version than Tina Turner's - a classic!

I think I will pay closer attention to my grammar from now on!

It was for the Girl who got away, she had the choice of me or a guy who wanted to fly jets in the Navy because Top Gun had just come out.

We actually had a Casablanca type moment except it was at a Church, I was playing Trumpet and Guitar (not at the same time of course) for on Easter Sunday. It was a couple years after she left town and of all the churches, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.

Should I ever conduct a choir in that church again on Easter Sunday I will never let any piano player play "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today".

It was around same time (1976-77) Dom but this song by Fleetwood Mac reminds me of a camping trip at Butterfield Country in San Diego County. They had a water slide and I noticed for the first time an amputee. Weird story but it stuck with me forever the teenage girl with one leg and loss of hair from chemo. This song was being played not only at our campsite but at the water slide. I always had this song connected to that poor girl. Funny how things stick in your mind and you connect it to whatever was going on at that point (of course something that needs to be "important").

Listen to what the man said, Someone Knocking on the door, Slip sliding away, Billy Joel's The Stranger album, Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, Eagles Hotel California...essentially anything in the top 40 from 1977-1979 (minus Disco) all remind me of when we lived in Coldwater Michigan during those years. Coldwater is a great little town and was a nice place to live.

Day Seven - A Song that Reminds You of a Certain Event

It starts getting less redundant after this.

This is my favorite Cure song. We went to their show a few years ago - this song reminds me of that. Robert Smith has to be almost fifty, and he doesn't seem to have changed at all (he's still a freak :)).

I saw The Cure at Red Rocks back in 1987, I wish I could tell you about it but I was three sheets to the wind and wanting to get down this chicks pants so I was all preoccupied...

That being said I give you Chains by Wolfgang Press, a better version of The Cure and less well known. This event is my discovery of the Wolfgang Press and my putting on the shelf of The Cure:

For a certain event:

I don't know if these count but I am submitting them for your approval:

When my daughter was born premature she was kept in the hospital for over 6 weeks, during that time I never missed a day despite her being about 50 minutes away from us (each way) and working 9+ hour days.
While she was in the NICU there were all these timers and bells a sounds that reoccured at specific intervals, I guess it was a warning if they weren't in sync. Anyway after spending so much time there I came up with a lullaby based around those tones that I sang to her all the time and which I started singing to myself at work while she was in the hospital to remind me of her. I still sing it to her to this day and it always calms her down and makes her happy.

So....when my wife got pregnant with our second child I was singing my daughters lullaby to her and it occurred to me that the 2 of us should write a song for the baby. I asked her what types of things she would like to sing to him we came up with lyrics and I wrote the tune. I then made sure that Abby and I sang the song into my wife's belly every night, and every other chance we could get, and even after he was born.
My mother-in-law was shocked to see our baby boy having a typical baby crying fit only to stop crying and be totally comforted when I asked his big sister to sing his song to him.
Three years later I can still calm him down during a meltdown just by singing his song to him, I hope it works in another 12-15 years!

But hammy as the above are those are the songs I thought of when I saw todays assignment.

This one reminds me of seeing Oingo Boingo every Halloween (or around the dates) for their 3 dates sold out shows at Irvine Meadows. This was the place to be! They were huge in the West Coast area and one of the biggest bands of my generation for SoCal. Danny Elfman is a master with Tim Burton now so if you enjoy Boingo and Nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride, then you might enjoy this one.

http://youtu.be/_UbGtjnluyY

(NOT SURE WHY I CUT N PASTE FROM THE EMBED AT YOUTUBE, IT WONT PASTE CORRECTLY!)

Here is another great song from Boingo from their Halloween show Farewell Tour. I am somewhere in that pit up front (went to LA with friends and then when friend bailed out on Irvine show, I went alone and snuck upfront). This one is total scary Halloween themed that he would use while scoring movies.

http://youtu.be/bKSdUTV_sb0

I either think of Boingo during Halloween time or Halloween when I hear Boingo.

SONG I know all the words to:

Well it is another song no one outside my immediate circule of family and friends may know but I wrote it based on the Above Casablanca type experience of running into my "Soul mate" at her church on Easter Sunday. It took me a couple weeks after I finished the mix on a 4 track tape deck that the 1st verse is borrowed from Mellisa but the chorus and words were all mine.

I would play it here but it would be **** on from all the trolls and those waiting to kick me (Rear End me) when I am down.

The Song is "East of Eden" and it won a Cert of acheviement for a song contest (no freaking $ but someone liked it enough to keep it on the pile until late in the judging.

Anyway the 1st verse goes (Printed at my discression, East of Eden Copyright 1992 Steven Henricksen, words and music Steven Henricksen):

"You were bound up in a tired boquet,
"The morning light was tangled in your hair,
"Your Shadow has not graced these streets in quite some time
"and I've been under this cloud so long...."

There is another verse before a kick assed chorus followed by some nice lyrics in the 3rd verse but my range was too high to hit the low g I believe and it hosed up the whole song, then repeat the chorus out..."

I keep meaning to rerecord it now that I have better gear but I never seem to get around to it. Maybe "D" will get it 20 years from now or maybe my wife and I have a great solid marriage until I die and she will never question me who it was for when I play it every now and then....

Anyway that song was my high water mark musically in the pop world, my Wind Quintet was the high water mark Classically.

Day Eight - A Song that You Know All the Words to

This is tough, because there are many. I'm a singer; just not a very good one.

Here's a song I love by a band I love:
<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tdWPs8ovAX0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tdWPs8ovAX0?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Another favorite:
<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ptqiIIXsq-0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And, last, but not least - one of my all-time favorites. And this version is just awesome. Each time I watch, I wonder how intimidating it must have been for Jakob Dylan to be singing by the Boss. I also wonder how much of the Boss's spit might have been covering poor Jakob, by the end of the song:

This is one of my all time fav Cars songs and I memorized the song as a kid and when I hear it now, I can still sing right along.

Why do I hate radio? Because songs like this never get played, and it's these songs that make The Cars so great:

<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Sbdk1GUbwY8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

i dream frequently
sometimes they come out funny
i go through insanity
all they want is money
all these parties get so habitual
the same sea of faces
always pushing, always pulling
always in the races

i get cooled out
i get the come ons
i get rumbled
i get crumbled

[Chorus:]
i'm the American misfit kid
still wondering what I did

i'm on the inside taking a fast ride
i'm stiletto so
so sharp and I'm willing to cut
sometimes nebulous
I'm ready to strut
lost and frantic
new age romantic
checking out the race
never cared about what it meant
always loved disgrace

i get rhythm
i get Cornflakes
i get fast love
i get wasted

[Chorus]

i dream frequently
sometimes they come out funny
i live with absurdity
always warm and runny
all these parties get so ritual
lonely hearts and aces
always pushing, always pulling
always in the races

[Chorus]

Would anyone call BS if I said I knew Visions of Johanna by heart? LOL

If the kids ask me to play a song for them on guitar I usually go for Dylan's "Your a big girl now", Eagles "Peaceful easy feeling", Joe Walsh's "Help me through the night", Beatles "Yesterday", Tom Wait's "I Hope that I don't fall in love with you" and "Blindlove", James Taylor "Fire and rain", "Old Paint" Traditional. Songs I may not be able to play and sing without a chord chart: JT's Your Smiling face and Handyman, among others

If you just listen to the tune, you'll be nodding off in no time. If you watch the video, not so much. This one's for Mock:

If I was going to make a Favorite Songs CD, this would definitely be on it. I loved when the Boss sang it with them at the MTV Music Awards.

Day Ten - A Song that Makes You Fall Asleep

I love falling asleep listening to this song. 'Echoes' also does the trick sometimes.

Day Eleven - A Song From Your Favorite Band

It's almost impossible to choose a "favorite band." So, I chose one of my favorite songs from the first band I really loved - one who is still in my top three or four.
