Hrm. If we rank by who I've seen most often, that would be either Alice Cooper (x3 times) or the Cruxshadows (x3 again). Soooo, one of each:

Alice first... "Pick Up the Bones" from his Brutal Planet album.

Cruxshadows... "Winterborn"

I don't know why. The Gin Blossoms always bugged me. Robin Wilson's voice just gets under my skin. I always wanted to like them. It just didn't work out. I'm so sorry.

No entry for today insofar as "guilty pleasure" is an oxymoron in my musical world.

I never feel guilty about enjoying a piece of music - whether it's approved by the fashion police or not. The latter are usually just frustrated musicians who became critics because they didn't have enough talent and/or ambition to make it in music.

Poor Hootie. Cracked Rear View was such a great album, front to back, that there was no WAY they were going to follow it up with anything even close to the same level.

Great choice. I'd put that whole record in my "guilty pleasure" drawer.

Yea I totally agree... When you write something that good following it is about impossible.

But to me if you write something that good you just have to chalk it up to I gave the world my best all in one shot and be proud of it...

Cracked Rear View by Hootie in ways reminds me of The Goo Goo Dolls , Dizzy Up the Girl album... In there was just no way those bands was following it with a better album.

Day Fourteen - A Song That No One Would Expect You to Love

There are some old hymns that I really enjoy. This first one is my absolute favorite; and I believe that this is my favorite version of it. If you ever get a chance, follow along with the words - so powerful and poignant. The songwriter is about to go through a lonely, dark night, and he is pleading for comfort and companionship for the night - very moving to me.

As a matter of fact, here they are:

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, Oh abide with me

I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless;
ills have no weight, and tears not bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, Oh abide with me

I asked for this to be played as one of the 3 songs of exit music at our wedding, the wife didn't object and I didn't see the connotation or anything bad about it even though it was considered "Eventide" music, it was just my all time favorite hymn. The look on that organist's face! She tried to talk me out of it and said she didn't have a good arrangement of it for joyful exit music and I told her to just play it a couple BPM's faster than she would normally and it will be fine. If anyone took offense they didn't say anything to us.

Day Sixteen - A Song That You Used to Love But Now Hate

When I was younger, I wanted to love the Doors. I even told people I loved them, and people would say, "Yeah, the Doors are cool!" I felt validated. Finally, I realized that I really don't care for them. And it almost seems that Jim Morrison did drugs.

The original is stellar and the first couple of times I heard this cover, I liked it since I'm a HUGE Metallica fan. Then after incessant radio play and a lot more time listening to Seger's original, I realized this was a plodding, overly-bombastic abortion:

Stairway to Heaven.

No, seriously: how many years has it been since Zeppelin? Yet there's still a local radio station that puts on a Led Zeppelin set every day at 5:00pm.

Stairway was cool for me up until about 1990, or the first 273 times I heard it on the radio. (Whichever came first.)

Now I change the station when it comes on, and I don't have it on any of my MP3 playlists. I don't want to even post a Youtube link cuz we all know the song too damn well.

Day Eighteen - A Song That You Wish You Heard on the Radio

So, this is for songs that you think should be heard by more people. I actually like this one more than some of the others. I interpret it to be something that you think is a good song, and you think has elements that could make it a popular song, for whatever reason.

I'm going back to the 80's for mine. Camouflage was a great 80's band, IMO - but they never made it to the level of the Depeche Modes, New Orders, Erasures, etc. This was probably their most popular songs, for what that's worth.

Big fan of Glassjaw, always have been. It took about a decade for them to put out their new EP, and although it's very short, it is absolutely ACE. A lot of bands like them from back in the day either sold out or die, but they've always found a unique way to reinvent themselves, while still keeping a lot of the same schemes that made them into the cult icons they are.

Day 19 and the epic band Steely Dan. I saw these guys at Fiddler's Green back in the day. I couldn't find anyone who wanted to go with me (I was young, so were my friends and Steely Dan wasn't a big name on the music radar screen of my friends). So, I asked this chick to go with me and she said yes. She liked me so of course I knew she'd go with...

Bush is unbelievably talented and has an almost prototypical metal voice. While I don't hate this band without him, they were leaps and bounds better with him. Belladonna brings a distinct and cool vibe to Anthrax but he's nowhere near the singer or writer. Props for 'Only'--that's a great angry tune.

Absolutely priceless.... and too funny! LOL

I wasn't joking. Chopin structured it around Beethoven's last work as a tribute to mankinds mortality.

According to the International Music Score Library Project:

[Chopin's] Piano Sonata is known colloquially as the "funeral march," and has become well known in popular culture. It was also used at the state funerals of US President John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. It was transcribed for full orchestra by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar in 1933 (in D minor) and its first performance was at his own memorial concert the next year. It was played at Chopin's own funeral during his burial at Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

It's funny how they shoot you down
When your hands are held up high
And you open up your heart and soul
But that's not enough for most.

I remember this much
There is nothing
You shouldn't speak of
If you got something to say
And there is no one
To be scared of
Just get them out of the way

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My heart is open wide
You can take anything that you want from me
There is nothing left to hide

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My hands are held up high
I'm learning how to hit back
I'm learning how to fight

The law of the jungle says
You look after yourself
But I remember this much
I love as I've been loved myself.

Don't forget what I told you now
When the question keeps on coming
And it's "How much more can you take"
When they've ripped your clothes to pieces
"Shouldn't you be gone by now"

But you keep on
GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
Setting your sights for the sky.
They can offer you anything at all
But your dreams must not be sold.
GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
No price is high enough
I'm fighting back with feeling
I'm fighting back with love

When the nails are biting into your hands
And the cross is heavy on your heart
Now is the time to really make a stand
MY HANDS ARE HELD UP HIGH.

(Going out)
IN A BLZE OF GLORY
(Going out)
IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
(Going out)
IN A BLAZE OF GLORY

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My heart is open wide
You can take anything that you want from me
But you cannot take my soul

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
My hands are held up high
I'm learning how to hit back
Yes I'm learning how to fight

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
Going out with my heart wide open
Going out with my hands held high

GOING OUT IN A BLAZE OF GLORY
(repeat)

Fighting back with love
Fighting back with LOVE!
No price is high enough
To take my soul, to take my soul
To take my soul

It's funny how they shoot you down
When your hands are held up high

Day Twenty-Five - A Song That Makes You Laugh

I didn't forget about this. My Dad has been very sick, and died this morning. I've been out there with him for the last four or five days, basically sitting by his bed. It's good that he died - he was in a lot of pain, and he was really old.

Anyway, enough drama. A song that makes you laugh. I am going to choose two from one of my favorite bands, The Beautiful South (Housemartins, etc).
