Here's Walterfootball's draft grade

2. Von Miller, DE/OLB
As I wrote in my mock draft, I don't understand why the Broncos are going to pick Von Miller for their new 4-3. Miller's best quality is rush the passer, but he's not going to be able to do that on first and second down. He's also going to have to learn a brand new position.

The decision to pick Miller deserves an F. However, Miller is a phenomenal A-type talent. Average the two grades together and you get... (Pick Grade: C)

Its a bold statement by Fox and Allen. The defensive scheme will have to be something very unique to maximize Miller's talents. It might work out well since both Doom and Ayers have LB experience, so we can really mix some things up. But its going to require this staff to get real creative.

Its something called COMMON SENSE. If they didnt intend to maximize his pass rush abilities, they wouldnt have taken him at 2 over all. You can zone blitz by dropping back D-tackles and blitzing Miller from any of the linebacker positions.

Sure, but he came up as a secondary guy and just hired a secondary guy as his DC. They've both been parts of some very impressive work with secondary scheme. But in Carolina Fox had some stand out DL talent and generated pressure with his front four.

Fox did break into the NFL with a 3-4 front and the Saints have done a lot of hybrid looks over the last few years. But its still a ballsy ass move to all but flat out say "we're reinventing the way OLB is played in a 4-3 front" or live in a hybrid that more closely resembles a 3-4 than the 4-3 both guys are more experienced in.

Its exciting. Fox is an excellent D coach and Allen has some impressive pedigree for a first time coordinator. But it will definitely be a challenge.

LDE, maybe bump inside to DT on pass rushing downs. At least that would be the assumption. They'd probably want to get his weight up like it was coming out of school though.

It really makes a lot of sense for Ayers personal development actually. He's got fantastic power, adding another 10-15 pounds of muscle will only help that. He plays the run well, he'll get to continue that here. He looks absolutely lost in coverage all the time, now he'll rarely ever have to do that. Plays very much to his strengths.

The thing about Von is that you can play him right now. He goes into camp as the favorite to win his position.

You cant be so sure about DT's because there seems to be a learning curve. That's why you can afford to take your DT in the second round or trade into the back end of the first for him. You dont have the pressure on that guy and you make him part of your rotation and let him earn the minutes.

Remember, Von Miller is the highest draft pick in Broncos history. The expectation isn't that he competes and wins a job (this isn't a #12 pick like Clady or a guy in the 20's like Tomas) - in the mold of #2 picks like Suh, Peppers and Megatron - I want Miller to be our best player by 2012 (if not this year).

When you have that kind of guy and Doom on the other side...look out. The Broncos are a pass rushing menace.

Head Coach John Fox on Miller: “We are thrilled to add Von Miller to the Denver Broncos. He’s a big playmaker and a leader who is explosive on the defensive side of the ball. It’s crucial in this league to be able to rush the passer, and Von adds that dimension to our defense. He’s also able to drop back into pass coverage. There’s no doubt that his versatility is going to make us a better football team

Best athlete and talent in the draft. I love Peterson, but I'm on board with Von. I don't think a 4-3 is ideal for his talents but given the investment the team has made they're going to put him in a position to succeed and probably design some plays specifically to feature him. I'm excited to see what he brings to this defense and how he is used. At worst I think we got one of the better 4-3 OLB in the game. I can certainly live with that.

Its a bold statement by Fox and Allen. The defensive scheme will have to be something very unique to maximize Miller's talents. It might work out well since both Doom and Ayers have LB experience, so we can really mix some things up. But its going to require this staff to get real creative.

Exactly what I was thinking. You almost have to start Ayers now at DE on the same side as Miller, at least for this year or until Miller shows he can defend the pass. Not that Ayers is great at that. But with these 2 guys on the same side (and teams won't be able to cheat a player over there with a health Doom on the other side), you can get very creative in which guy rushes, which drops back.

Since Miller only goes 240 (but he's a lean 240) I have no doubts he will get destroyed in the running game if were were to be end rusher exclusively. I think they will try to use him on end some but blitz him. He's not just an edge rusher, he's got a good set of moves.

He's natural in pursuit...not a one-trick pony at all. He takes great angles and is able to re-orient his angles in a flash. He's like a missle trained on a moving object. His internal calculus is natural and extremely fast. I think that thats what makes him special...his instincts are there combined with some serious explosiveness. Watch his videos. It looks like he isnt doing much and he's setting up and flying by his opponent. He makes it look easy. Like a man among boys.

He can add bulk to his frame and not lose his speed on the edge.

It will take Miller time, but I think that within 3 years people are talking about him as the best OLB in the league.

I was fully expecting Dareus, but I'm okay with the pick.

1. He was probably the best pass rusher in the draft. Bringing an outside pass-rush is critical in today's game. Just look at how our defense tanked when Doom was lost for the season.

2. Switching to a 4-3 is really going to strip our linebacking corps, assuming that Ayers and Doom are both going to be moved up to DE. This was a major position of need. Bigger than most analysts may have realized.

3. LBs typically have longer "shelf-lives" than interior linemen. You don't get the #2 pick very often, so you want someone who will hopefully contribute for a long time.

4. This draft class is deep in defensive linemen, not so much at LB.

5. I'm not sure exactly how he's going to fit into the scheme of things, but talent and speed = a lot of flexibility.

These are all arguments that people were making about Von Miller leading up the draft, and I guess I'm finally starting to understand them.

Plus, he reminds me of Al Wilson and that's not a bad thing at all.

Yeah that was retarded thing to say man. I don't like that pick as the 2nd over all pick, but you do understand thats were the pressure comes from in a 4-3? Most of the essential principles that apply to a weakside linebacker apply to a strongside linebacker. The typical difference between the two is that a strongside linebacker is stronger, specifically: able to fight off blocking tight ends and fullbacks, and more frequently deployed as a blitzer

Because 4-3 LBs never rush the passer, right? And god forbid installing a defensive scheme that maximizes each player's skill set. Simply out of the question.

Yeah - I love how people act like there is only 1 way to use a guy in a scheme. Like Allen and Fox are so stupid, they'll play Miller as a typical SLB in a 4-3, and not utilize his strengths. He'll just cover the TE all day long.

That's because we only had Nolan for 1 year, and we don't know/remember what a good DC can do.

Nice video, 2 of the DL taking up double teams.

The chances of that happening in Denver right now, are between 0 and 0.

Oh lord, it's going to be sick.

And Miller just became Ayers' best friend. Ayers holding the point of attack against a tackle while Miller gets through the FB/TE to make plays in the backfield?

BONER ALERT.

yep that's exactly what I have been saying also, this benefits Ayers a LOT to me

this pick makes all of the other LBs better...that is what it's all about, and something we haven't seen in a while

I don't think that it's beyond the realm of possibility. Our D sucked ass. I mean it sucked HUGE amounts of ass. Now our scheme is changing and our stars (barring any surprise improvements) will be at DE, Will and CB. Sam is wide open and this kid is supposed to be a beast. It wouldn't surprise me if he takes the starting Sam at least at some point during his rookie season.

He was kidding. On this defense, Miller better start from day one or we have problems.

I'm a little concerned that football may take a distant second to chickens on Miller's priority list. We'll have to monitor.

Poultry science means he can chase and catch chickens. Ever tried it? Now, that's perfect linebacker traits!
