View Full Version : Favorite & Least Favorite Moment Watching the Draft

I want to hear your favorite and least favorite moment since you started watching the draft. It can be a guy you really wanted and the Broncos picked him or a player you didn't want at all or didn't know. Could be a major reach. Could have been a blockbuster trade you where excited about. Could be something an analyst said or anything to do with watching the draft.

Only rule is it has to be at the time. So basically saying don't use hindsight and be honest. If you truly thought he would win you super bowls and it was your favorite moment then by all means say that player.

And stop eye balling my avatar ......

I effing hate Jason LaCanfora. That dipwad who scoops who each team will draft about 30 seconds before the pick is announced. Talk about ruining the draft moment - he sucks and his network needs to go bankrupt.

Taking 3 cornerbacks in a row - it just boggles the mind. It's almost like you don't know how to pick cornerbacks so let's just grab a bunch and hope someone works out.

Trading next year's first for a 2nd this year was stupid. More than stupid, but I'm having trouble coming up with a word that expresses my disgust fully.

I really liked trading the 5th this year to pick up Sydquan Thompson and Jammie Kirlew. That was a great gamble.

Paul Toviessi. I knew that morning when I read the paper that the Broncos flubbed the crap out of that one.

Best? Tim Tebow. The reaction on this forum was cataclysmic and will likely never happen again.

Wasn't the best or worst for me in the draft, but the biggest emotional swing was the 2006 trade for Cutler.

When they first made the trade, I thought they were going to get Ngata, and were primed to be the favorites to win the superbowl next year.

But then they drafted Cutler, who I thought was the worst of the three 1st round QB's that year.

Took a 2 months to convince myself that it was the right decision.

On another note, I was really excited when they drafted Walton, thought he'd be a borderline pro-bowler his first year. Reality went a little differently. :moody:

ill give you my two most recent

worst: Last year I may be a Tebow supporter now but when it happened I was mad I felt we had needs else where first and foremost and my phone was blowing up with people ready to make fun of the Broncos. I also wanted Dez Bryant so when we traded up I thought for sure we were gonna take him and we took DT my jaw dropped to the floor, wasn't really all that happy with the first round last year.

best: 2009 drafting Knowshon and Ayers because this is the two prospects I wanted the most and I was really happy when the Broncos got both of them.

hopefully 2011 will be the new best when we draft the freak athlete that is Patrick Peterson

I was totally stoked for the entire 2006 draft. Denver picked up so many good players in that draft then proceeded to trade them around the league.

Absolutely did not like the Moss, Middlebrooks and Moreno picks. Reasons in order: vastly overrated, injured and slow, totally unnecessary to take a running-back with the 12th pick.

Worst: the Cutler pick. it was a team coming off an AFC Championship Game appearance. it had two 1st round picks that could have been used to get a RB and a Defensive playmaker(i thought the trade was going to be for Ngata or even Peterson) the Cutler pick said Shanahan was no longer looking to win in the present but down the road a few years, and was the end of high level football in Denver.

Best: Doom. I could not believe a guy with his production was still on the board in the 4th round. i almost **** myself because i didn't even think he would stand a chance of getting drafted by Denver, because another team would have grabbed him in the 2nd or early 3rd just from looking at game film of the guy instead of body type.

BTW, i liked the Clarett pick at the time. i thought he had the potential to be great in Denver, and he did if he could have taken his chance seriously.

Wanted to bash my skull into a brick wall when we took Lelie instead of Reed.

side note: can someone tell me what happened to the two 1st round picks we had in 2006. i know we packaged the number 15 pick with i believe 68 to get Cutler at 11, but what happened to the number 22 pick?

BroncoMan4ever
04-25-2011, 12:54 AM
worst: the cutler pick. that team needed a defensive playmaker and a RB, but instead of reloading a team that had just come off an AFC Champhionship game appearance, Shanahan instead opted to blow up that team and start over. Cutler symbolized the end of high level of football in Denver and was the beginning of the end for Shanahan.

Best: Doom. i could not believe he was available in the 4th round. i believed someone would have jumped on him in the 2nd or at the latest early 3rd when they saw game footage of the guy and looked at his stats instead of his size.

on a side note: is Vernon Davis a FA now? it seems to me his contract should be expired by now, since Doom has come up for a new deal, as has Marshall and CUtler

Sticking to recent history with this reply...

Worst: Trading the first round pick for a second-rounder to take an undersized CB who was released less than 2 years later (A. Smith).

Best: Ryan Clady (who was projected to go much earlier) still being there when it was our turn .

Worst: Cutler, I was convinced that we were going to get Ngata when we traded up and he was on the board - and we moved just ahead of Baltimore to do it. I was (and still am) pissed about it. The team we had just needed a guy like Ngata and I thought we were Superbowl bound. Here we are 5 years later, still looking for a guy like Ngata.

Best: Tebow - I really hate Goodell for not letting me have a Saturday draft gathering, so I was the only one in my livingroom jumping up and down when the pick was made.

Most of the drafts I've been "meh, don't know them, hope they turn out okay" - Lelie, Foster, Nash, Middlebrooks....

Hope we nail all of our picks this year.

The last two years have been pretty horrible to watch. I mean, McD was pretty genius at making deals to land picks, then totally crapping the bed when it was time to put a name/face to that pick.

The only draft that I was ever stoked about the player before he ever set foot on the field was Elway. Most of the time we take someone that I have never heard of or wanted someone else. Carl Pickens and Ray Malauaga, and Alfred Williams come to mind. Reeves drafts used to routinely piss me off. For some reason I didnt like the Atwater pick either, then I saw him on the field. I just remember really wanting Andre Rison to give Elway another weapon instead.

I was apoplectic about the Cutler pick. I talked myself into liking it within a couple of days, though. That said, I love how everyone is claiming they wanted Ngata, when the fact is most people were drooling over Broderick Bunkley. I will be honest and admit I wanted Bunkley, so I guess I'm glad we went with Cutler over my preference.

Worst: Cutler. I will never ever understand the logic of blowing up a team that had just hosted the AFC Championship Game and needed only a defensive playmaker or two to put them over the top. When it came out later that Shanahan never even met the kid, and used Jeff Fisher's recommendation to draft him, I was even more upset.

Shanahan defends him to this day, so....

The worst was easily trading a first for a second. I still can't figure out how that makes any sense. Maybe if we were a consistent playoff team at the time....

The best, Jay Cutler. Too bad McDaniels f'd the franchise. I still find it weird that people liked and supported McDaniels. I find it even funnier that some still try to justify horrible moves like this one. What are you? A raiders fan? How can you be happy about what he did to this franchise?

In hind sight that was Shanny's undoing, had he drafted for defense instead of blindly going after Cutler (in actuality a reach to recoup mastermind status in the media [same with Clarret]) Jake would not have suffered a phycological melt down and, with help, would have been good enough to keep us in the upper echelons of the NFL. Meaning he would still be here. But we got Tebow hopefully that will make up for the fiasco that befell the Broncos.

I agree with all of this. Drafting Cutler, sight unseen, seduced by his arm strength and little else, was the beginning of the end for Mike Shanahan and dominant football in the Rocky Mountains.

I also hope Tebow is the answer... I have my doubts, but I hope he is.

Best was definitely the Cutler and Tebow moments. Cutler because it came out of nowhere (and anyone who doesn't think that Jake skipping all of the off-season workouts even prior to the draft had something to do with this "meltdown" is mistaken). Tebow because I had been pushing even the year before he decided to stay at Florida. (I also wanted Urban Meyer rather then McDaniels).

Worst was Alphonso Smith. It was really damn hard to not throw something through the TV when that trade happened. Worst trade ever.

Best moment:
My parents used to play the card game bridge in the residential area we used to live at in Colorado, and one couple who played was George Dyer who was a defensive line coach for us. Anyways, its 2000, and I had been watching the draft all day. My parents just so happen to be hosting bridge night, and I asked Dyer about the draft. They absolutely LOVED Deltha O'Neal and he raved about him a lot. He also said its crazy that people actually sit and watch the draft that long lol.
Also, I was really happy when we got Lelie back in 2002. I also liked Reed, but I liked Lelie a lot too.

Worst:
Drafting Willie Middlebrooks, hated that pick. I also didn't like the Cutler pick too much either.

When they first made the trade, I thought they were going to get Ngata, and were primed to be the favorites to win the superbowl next year.

I thought the exact same thing. Was very disappointed. I think it's easy to be happy about a draft pick but hard to be absolutely elated as no one knows how they will turn out, you can only hope. Believe it or not I was happy with the Hillis pick. He had blocked for Felix Jones and I can't remember who else and they were outstanding runners. I thought he would more play the FB position. I was happy with the Beadles pick last year.

That being said the disappointments and going ballistic moments for me were Tommy Maddox, Ashley Lelie, Marcus Nash, Thomas and Tebow last year.

My favorites:
1. Trading our first a few years back for the Redskins first the next year, and an extra 2nd.

2. Last year when we traded back and got DT and Tebow in the first while still having a 2nd and two 3rds. Made even better when we grabbed Beadles, Walton, and Decker with those picks.

Worst:
1. Taking Mo Clarrett when Brandon Jacobs was still on the board.

2. Passing on Haloti Ngata to take Cutler after going to the AFCC.

3. Trading UP to select Jarvis Moss. Particularly stung because I rushed to a sports bar on my lunch break to catch the Broncos pick, saw that they'd traded up, and then they took Moss.

4. Trading up to the #15 spot and then taking DJ when Stephen Jackson was on the board. I like DJ and all but we'd been digging solid OLBs up to flank Wilson from waiver wires. We also wound up bringing Gold back, making it worse. I wanted Jackson BAD to put our running game over the top.

The thing i hate the most is when we pick a player in a position that really isn't in much of a need. Then another team picks a player that we need and ends up being a pro bowler and the guy we picked doesn't amount to jack ****..hence passing on Ngata and Reed..and picking Moss, Thomas etc.

I liked the DT pick..wasn't sure about the Tebow pick. As long as DT isn't fielding kick returns..i think he'll be a beast.

It has happened a lot... I think, and it appears clear to me now anyway, the only thing keeping Denver from being a bottom dweller was Mike Shanahan's coaching and the rest of his staff because the way the drafts and free agency were handled the Broncos seemed to always be running on fumes.

Absolute Worst
The Jarvis Moss pick -- I'd been bagging on him for weeks before the draft, and my buddy and I had been referring to him as "Kate" Moss, as he looked freakishly skinny in some draft guide that we had. Same buddy was over at my house for the draft, and when they said "Denver has traded their 3rd and 5th round picks to move up, and is now on the clock." I turned to him and said -- "if they pick "Kate" Moss, I swear to God I'm gonna throw something through the television." They did, and I did -- my wife is still pissed about that to this day. Horrible, horrible pick that I hated even BEFORE we made it.

Absolute best
Peyton Hillis and Josh Barrett in the 7th round of the 2008 draft -- I've been a rabid Broncos fan and draftnik for more than 20 years now, and these are the only two picks where Denver took who "my guy" was on the board.

There's not one moment that stands out, but in recent memory the Clarett and Alphonso Smith picks really pissed me off the same. I was also pretty hacked off with how we traded up for Tebow. I am still on the fence with that as we gave a up a lot of good depth that we really needed. It's no secret I was not a fan of Tebow as a pro QB and certainly not as a first round pick. After trading down several times I thought McD finally got it and then when he gave it all back for Tebow I had my mini-meltdown. That said, he has won me over, but I would not be one that would cry if we drafted/traded for another QB.
