PETER FRAMPTON’S LOST GIBSON LES PAUL GUITAR FOUND ON CARIBBEAN ISLAND OF CURAÇAO AFTER 32 YEARS

TWO FANS COLLABORATE TO RETURN FAMED GUITAR

GUITAR PLAYED BY FRAMPTON ON HUMBLE PIE AND
... FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE! ALBUMS

http://i.imgur.com/N1ZW6.jpg

Peter Frampton’s long-lost guitar was recently discovered after its disappearance in a plane crash 32 years ago. In 1980, a cargo plane carrying Frampton’s equipment for an upcoming show in Panama crashed, supposedly destroying all of the instruments on board including Frampton’s cherished 1954 Gibson Les Paul. Thanks to the unyielding work of two dedicated fans, one in Holland and one on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao, as well as the CEO of the Curaçao Tourist Board, Frampton was reunited with the guitar in an emotional meeting last month in Nashville, TN.

The Curaçao Tourist Board helped acquire the guitar from an individual after hearing news that they may indeed have a lead on the long lost and beloved guitar. Together in Nashville, TN at the Gibson Custom Shop, with experts from Gibson Guitar and Peter Frampton, the team confirmed it was the original guitar long missing from Frampton’s collection.

Frampton’s custom guitar was given to him in 1970 by a man named Mark Mariana when Humble Pie played at the Fillmore West. Frampton borrowed Mariana’s guitar for the show and afterward tried to buy it from him, “But to my surprise he said he couldn't sell it to me—he wanted to give it to me!” he notes.

Frampton played the guitar exclusively on Humble Pie’s Rock On and Rocking the Fillmore albums. The guitar also appeared on a number of sessions for other artists including George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, and John Entwistle. Most notably, Frampton played the guitar on the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the top-selling live records of all time.

Frampton is ecstatic to have the guitar back in his hands once again. “I am still in a state of shock, first off, that the guitar even exists let alone, that it has been returned to me. I know I have my guitar back, but I will never forget the lives that were lost in this crash. I am so thankful for the efforts of those who made this possible…And, now that it is back I am going insure it for 2 million dollars and it’s never going out of my sight again! It was always my #1 guitar and it will be reinstated there as soon as possible -- some minor repairs are needed. And, I just can’t wait to get Mark Mariana on the phone.”

Peter Frampton Reunited With ‘Best Guitar’ After 31 Years

<address class="byline author vcard">By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR. (http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/author/james-c-mckinley-jr/)</address>
(http://www.frampton.com/)
Peter Frampton (http://www.frampton.com/)has been reunited with the Gibson electric guitar he played on “Frampton Comes Alive,” three decades years after it was presumed destroyed in a plane crash.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2012/01/04/arts/03artsbeat-peterframpton/03artsbeat-peterframpton-articleInline.jpg

Peter Frampton’s favorite guitar, presumed destroyed in 1980, was returned to him last month.

It turns out the guitar did not burn up in November 1980 when a cargo plane crashed on takeoff in Caracas, Venezuela, on its way to Panama, where Mr. Frampton was to perform. Instead someone plucked it from the burning wreckage and later sold it to a musician on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao.

The guitar was returned to Mr. Frampton in Nashville last month after a two-year negotiation involving the local musician who had the guitar, a customs agent who repairs guitars in his spare time, a diehard Frampton fan in the Netherlands and the head of the island’s tourist board.

Last month, the tourist board official, Ghatim Kabbara, bought the guitar with public funds and traveled to Nashville to hand it to Mr. Frampton in a tattered gig bag. Mr. Frampton said he knew as soon as he picked the instrument up that it was the same 1954 Gibson Les Paul (http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul.aspx/?s_kwcid=les%20gibson%20paul%7C9994267740)with customized pickups that he had played for a decade. It was an emotional moment, he said.

“For 30 years, it didn’t exist – it went up in a puff of smoke as far as I was concerned,” Mr. Frampton said in a telephone interview.

Mr. Frampton said he was given the guitar by a man named Mark Mariana in 1970. Mr. Frampton had been playing with his band Humble Pie at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, and he borrowed the guitar from Mr. Mariana for a show because his own instrument kept feeding back when he soloed. He fell in love with it. Made of Honduran mahagony, it was light in his hands, and the neck was thin, the fretting action light, suiting his small hands.

“I used it for both sets and my feet didn’t touch the ground,” he recalled. saying he thought, “This is the best guitar I have ever played.”

After the show he tried to buy the instrument, but Mr. Mariana insisted on giving it to him. It became his favorite guitar. He played it on the Humble Pie albums “Rock On” and “Rocking the Fillmore,” and on all his solo records. He used it in sessions with George Harrison, Harry Nilsson and John Entwistle.

Perhaps most important, it was the guitar he played on the 1976 solo album “Frampton Comes Alive!” one of the best-selling live albums ever and the recording that established him as one of the great rock guitarists of the 1970s. “It’s all I ever used for 10 years,” he said. “That was it. That was part of me.”

Mr. Kabbara said the guitar surfaced two years ago when the local guitarist, who has not been identified, took the instrument to Donald Valentina, a Curaçao customs agent who collects and repairs old guitars in his spare time. The musician had been using it for decades, playing in hotels and bars on the island, but did not know the instrument’s history, Mr. Kabbara said.

Asked to repair the guitar, Mr. Valentina noticed the unusual third set of pickups and burn marks on the neck, Mr. Kabbara said. The customs agent began to suspect the guitar might be the one Mr. Frampton had played on the “Frampton Comes Alive!” album. He consulted with another Frampton fan in the Netherlands, who confirmed it had all the earmarks of the missing Gibson. Mr. Valentina also sent photos of the inner works of the guitar to Mr. Frampton. Mr. Frampton said he was stunned when he saw the photos; it looked like guitar, he said, but he could not be sure.

For two years Mr. Valentina tried to persuade the local guitarist to sell the instrument, and finally, in November, facing a financial problem, he finally agreed. But Mr. Valentina did not have money and, afraid another buyer might scoop up the guitar, he approached Mr. Kabbara at the tourist board.

Mr. Kabbara, an amateur guitarist who admires Mr. Frampton, agreed to put up the board’s funds – about $5,000 – to purchase the guitar, on one condition. He and Mr. Valentina would take the guitar to Mr. Frampton as a gesture of goodwill. “I thought the right thing to do was to give him back his guitar,” he said. “This guitar was him. The whole 1970s was this guitar.”

Mr. Frampton, who is 61, said he hopes to play the guitar again when he appears at the Beacon Theater in New York in February. For now, he has left the instrument at the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville to have some minor repairs made. The neck is still straight, he said, but he must replace old pickups with new ones, made to the same specifications as the original coils. But he said he will leave the burn marks and scrapes alone.

“I want it to have its battle scars,” he said.

NOt sure if you've heard the new song. I heard it this morning and it's a stinker, IMO. It's called 'Tatoo' and pretty much confirms that without Mike Anthony, this just ain't gonna work. The backing vocals are soft and scared and the whole vibe from the bass is lacking.

I'm sure Wolfgang was sitting in the studio recording this thinking, 'Man I wish I could sit in with Disturbed...'

Tatoo is probably the worst track on there, and it's pretty bad, to be sure. But I kinda like the vibe of certain tracks like Blood and Fire--they feel kinda like Diver Down meets WACF. Still, I don't see any of these tracks making the cut on my VH playlist. As one of the world's biggest VH fans, I'll buy it and enjoy it for what it is.

Celebrating the masterwork that is The Joshua Tree ... released 25 years ago this month.

Could make a plausible argument it's the greatest album ever made. I think Bono and Edge deserve status right alongside the greatest rock collaborators, Jagger-Richards, Townsend-Daltrey, Henley-Frey, maybe even Page-Plant. They've more than earned it.

I’ve just recently discovered lots and lots of isolated track videos on YouTube. Probably most interesting to musicians, I can't stop listening to them.

John Bonham - Fool in the Rain. Obv helps to run the lyric/medley as you go. Jump to 2:30 for the piano break and then double time shuffle all the way home

You guys really believe that, even most of it? Too bad. Not that we disagree, but that you don't experience the same power of 'One' or 'Two Hearts Beat as One.' Songs that mean and move like 'Pride in the Name of Love' and 'Bullet the Blue Sky,' fun like 'Angel of Harlem,' 'Sweetest Thing,' 'Love Comes to Town.' Can't imagine how anybody could resist the irresistable shout-out-loud energy of 'Beautiful Day.'

I suppose I might be overrating them by reference, in that I'm often heard calling Bono is the best human being on the planet. Which I believe :approve:

Okay, south of Page-Plant and Jagger-Richards, north of Townsend-Daltrey and Henley-Frey. You might not appreciate the depth of their discography, it's double-triple that of Zeppelin or the Eagles.

To me, U2 has always been like, "WTF?" I just don't get it. It's like Bruce Springsteen. Never got that either. I'd also put them way south of Townsend. Tommy? Guitar anthems like "We Don't Get Fooled Again?" "My Generation?" "Bargain?" That's some world changing rock. The Who go up in the first tier, IMHO.

I do agree that Bono is a very admirable person. ;D

You like RR/The Band more than U2? This is honestly the very first time I have ever questioned your taste. In anything ... I can honestly say I'm kinda at a loss really.

I dunno where Hogan is, I took a sabbatical myself, so I dunno. Foghat is just a thing I poke him with, don't think he's ever mentioned them. But he did compare the quality of Vanilla Fudge production with that of Led Zeppelin. Which is even more preposterous than liking Foghat.

Yes, that's the one.

Talk about an epic masterpiece!

The Edge and Bono of U2 contributed some guitar and BU vocals on "Testimony" and "Sweet Fire of Love."

These tracks were recorded in Ireland the same time as the record Buff was extolling.

Godsmack's upcoming live album is due out this spring! It will include 13 of the bands favorite live songs that were recorded at their Detroit Rock City show last tour. The guys were recording a lot last tour but this is the show that stood out the most to the band & really kicked ass.

“It’s always a great audience, as any rock band will tell you. Playing there is a special kind of fan base that they have there, they live up to their reputation. They’re a great rock audience, so that’s where the record was recorded.” ~ Sully Erna

Obscure but powerful. Close your eyes and you'll swear its Medley and Hatfield with Specter at the board. Open them and it's one-hit wonder The Walker Brothers 1966 hit 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' (one hit stateside, several in Britain). XM-Sirius The Blend channel serves up lotsa little 60s drama nuggets like this, e.g. Theme from Valley of the Dolls, Some Velvet Morning, Whiter Shade of Pale, The Look of Love. Righteous channel.

Last time I was in here, I took one on the chin, see. Couppla smart guys tried to rattle me, said U2 was no good, sounded like clanking chains, nails on a chalkboard they said. Their words hit hard, a left and a right. I stumbled out of here, sure sure ... any one of you would do the same. But later ... only later did I see it for what it was. It was all a ruse, see ... little game of 'Tweak the Buff' ... cut his breathless, overwrought U2 love-warblings down to size. Well it won't happen again, see ... I won't be cut down to size. I'm too busy gazing wide-eyed at Bono/Edge as they take their rightful place ... in the Pantheon ... !

MJ's first single, 'Got To Be There.' Heard it somewhere and was blown away by the strength of his voice, he REALLY belts out these lines. Couldn't think of other such belter-songs by MJ, no other Soul numbers either, so I checked his discography to see. I was pretty shocked ... for an artist with "all-time greatest" juice, MJ's output was sporadic, even sparse. Of course there were singles with other artists, but all-original output: Jackson released just 10 original-material albums in his 37 year solo career, three of them in the first 16 months (Got to Be There, Ben and Music & Me), none of which even went Gold.

That's a lot less than other "greatests" Metallica (9 albums in 28 years), and certainly the Eagles, whose 6 in 9 years seems pretty decent in hindsight.

Listen though, that is one hot vocal track. It's doubled (maybe tripled), still .. it's one hot vocal.

The Beatles - 50 Years Later

Link (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/story/2012-06-10/beatles-50th-anniversary/55506324/1)

On Jan. 1, 1962, The Beatles flunked an audition at Decca Records in London.
Label executive Dick Rowe's brush-off: "Guitar groups are on the way out."

It was an inauspicious start for the group that would soon dominate global society
and a downbeat Day 1 in the year that saw the scrappy Liverpool lads evolve into
the Fab Four who forever altered the course of pop music.

No other entertainers in history have been as popular, as influential, as important or
as groundbreaking. The best-selling act ever sold 600 million albums worldwide and
racked up 20 No. 1 U.S. singles, a Billboard record that still stands. The band hijacked
the entertainment media and transcended music to become a chapter in world history.
Its members had political clout, spiritual authority, cultural sway and the ears of the planet.

Yes played the paramount thursday, and I skipped it mostly because Wakeman and Anderson aren't there anymore. I found out saturday that Procol Harum opened. I've been waiting 10 years for a chance to see them, and missed it. So bummed.

Anyone else going to see Iron Maiden tonight?

I've been posting in this thread for years. :)

Yes, you live online.

Since you tend toward rap and hip hop but more often than not have great difficulty in finding anything half-decent to post, here's something for you

Yes, you live online.

Says the person who spent hours of her time trying to post pictures of Century Theater online. Time waster. How many friends ya got in real life? Lol. You went to a movie alone. Sad. No family, boyfriend? Nothing? Aw.

Since you tend toward rap and hip hop but more often than not have great difficulty in finding anything half-decent to post, here's something for you.

Did not bother listening to.

Please, no more of your gutter scrapings.

Considering you are likely someone who cannot play any instrument worth a hoot or performed live in front of people, your opinion on music means absolutely nothing.

^ Sore ass boy is back for a cameo. Dude, you have 20,000 posts at each single football forum you've posted/been banned at. That's ridiculous. How does taking a couple pictures at a movie theater nullify your silly life?

But you know I live in Texas and I've never been to Century Aurora, right? I certainly didn't see Iron Man 3 there a few days ago, that's for sure.

Anyone with ears has a valid opinion on music and the rap you post is trash.

How the hell do you post the videos?

On YouTube, when you are watching the videos click:

SHARE -- (right below where the video is playing);

Then you proceed to EMBED (which will be right below SHARE);

Finally. . . you copy and paste the iFrame code inside here and it pops up!

Sweet as candy, man. The best of Mr. Big wrapped up in one song. The harmony on the backing vocals caught my ear the first time i heard this.

My 2nd grader son was "Star Student" in his class and for a week he was able to bring things in a had to do a little poster about himself and one of the questions he had to answer was what his favorite song was. He picked this song :sunshine:

Picked up tickets today for Dave Mason at the Soiled Dove Underground. One of the more underrated vocalists/guitarists ever. This song is a great example of his work, including tremendous guitar work toward the end of the tune.
