Wow!

That's one you definitely don't want to miss.

I just saw Vic with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl at Iridium in NYC on 12/29.

Awesome show!

The show was unbelievable. Victor is great, but Stanley is still king.

I went to the Iridium in March '09 to see Les Paul's Monday night gig. Went back a few nights later to see a guitarist who's name is escaping me....

EDIT: Allan Holdsworth!

I'll take Wooten 10/10 times.

Stanley's great, dont get me wrong, but as a bass player who has learned plenty of both of their techniques, Vic is the king among bass players for a reason. Dude revolutionized the instrument with a similar impact that Jaco had.

No big deal - just sat in with Stan on a tune when he came to M.I. for a clinic. He sometimes invites students and faculty to sit in.

I don't know Allan - I've just said "hello" to him and chatted briefly on two occasions.

I'll try to find that Stanley chart I was talking about and post a scan.

Hopefully not - I wouldn't want to be a rock star or a famous person. I value my anonymity and privacy WAY too much.

First version I ever heard, off his Wired album. Watch this video, this guy is so disinterested ... misses strings at :56 and 1:10, junky fret hammers at 3:30-something, zero energy. From 2:55 to 3:15 he's sounds like a 14 year-old kid who just got a guitar for Christmas. He embarrassed himself at halftime of an NFL Playoff game this year, too. I was embarrassed for him.

Am I missing something, is he wasted, what?

A gold top Deluxe for $900? That doesn't sound right. It is a Gibson, not a sneaky Epiphone. Don't tempt me ....

Do those P-90s give you the snap of a classic single coil? I never told you this because you're such an unrelenting purist, but right around the time my LP was stolen, I was set to make a big modification. Pull the neck humbucker, and lay in a coil-tap/coil-split pickup. A Duncan I think, and a snap-up volume pot for that pickup. You know I love the neck pickup on a Strat ... clean with just a dash of reverb.

You're definitely a purist in matters of gear and equipment ... a driven-snow purist. Not just all-tube amps front and back, and not just insisting on an all-analog string from end to end, but other stuff. You once explained in detail your list of a few alterations that could give any Strat a more solid tone, cut back on tinny sound and hum. Very meticulous steps including a "block" of some kind on the bridge? You insisted it was still 100% pure Stratocaster, just better stronger faster.

Oh, OK - I wasn't sure what you were talking about, but I get it now.

BTW, I was plugging a company that makes cold-rolled steel replacement trem blocks for Stratocasters:

http://www.callahamguitars.com/

Fender used steel blocks in the early years, but they started using crappy pot metal for the blocks when they went down the mass production road.

Music Man? Haven't seen one of those guys in a long time. A guitar player buddy of mine owned an HD series back in the early 80s. Great-sounding amps that never quite got the recognition and acclaim they deserved. The 112 RD is solid state front end/tube power section, right?

VERY different versions ... the Cars' original sung by the late great Benjamin Orr, accompanied by my teen hero Elliot Easton, and Red House Painters 18 years later ... (RHP version was used in a Banana Republic commercial).

Yep!

The clean/bright settings on the amp are awesome.

It can get heavy as crap too.

The reverb is so-so, but I wouldn't be using reverb on an amp, unless it is one that is absolutely special.

I'm looking @ new gear right now.

Trying to decide whether or not to build a guitar straight up, or just spend up to $1,000 on one already built online.

If I did the finishing on the guitar, I'd save a couple hundred bucks. That's like the biggest major cost from places like Warmoth when ordering parts. I'd just probably put a natural laqeuer finish on it or something.

I'm thinking a '72 thinline build or a Firebird.

Commandment VII. (A) is correct actually. So how does saying so make me a douchebag?

Commandment IX is hilarious ... though I never pretended myself. I used 8's when I could find them.

And Music Man ... they were like Peavey, from zero to everywhere in no time. First time I saw both brands they suddenly had a full line of instruments amps and support gear. Difference is Music Man was actually good stuff, I wish it was Peavey that faded away. Kind of like Elliot Easton ... why didn't he stick around and John Mayer fade away?

Number VI was the one that really cracked me up. Ha!Funny and true. I was in a group that insisted on running a line driver out of the back of my amp line to the board. Of course that was a different sound than I was generating outta my speakers, so I wanted a mike. Tom didn't get it, insisted mikes picked up too much ambient sound. So for awhile, this was a common exchange ........

"Tell Casey to turn down his amp"Tell Tom to mike my amp and get rid of the line driver"Tell Casey to turn down his amp"Tell Tom to mike my amp and get rid of the line driver"Tell Casey to turn down his amp"Tell Tom to mike my amp and get rid of the line driver

Finally I was able to explain, finally understood and agreed to mike my amp.

So I turned it down. For awhile ;D

I used to think so too....till I saw them live a couple of years ago. They were disappointing to say the least. Very lethargic. The lowpoint was when they did the most sluggish cover of "Shake Some Action" that I've ever been witness to. Perhaps it was an off night or something, but it really blew my image of them. At least when I saw CVB back in the late 80's, they were still trying at that point, these guys were clearly just going thru the motions and it was a huge bummer.

Wow LABF..I'm impressed! Coltrane and Miles...you just don't run into too many jazzbeards these days......Kudos to you sir! I also love ESP..great offering from the immortal Miles.

Ro...I don't run across many Leonard Cohen fans either...He's a very interesting guy IMO.

I wish they would come up with a definitive George Harrison career collection...ATMP is a classic no doubt, but I can get along without half of it's material and much of the Dark Horse catalog has sadly gone out of print (even though many were hit and miss affairs, when a single stuck..it stuck).

and Buffalo Springfield...tragically overlooked these days...if anyone reading this doesn't know them, you should...get their three cd's ASAP...you won't be disappointed, that's a guarentee.

Agree all the way round, though a little Leonard Cohen goes a long way.

Harrison could definitely write a hook. Sad to say, his legal team's work on the 'He's So Fine/My Sweet Lord' lawsuit is taught in law schools as a cautionary tale ... moral of the story is to leave intellectual property law, or any specialized law, to the specialists. He got shafted.

Just glanced through a really excellent Beatles bio, McCartney's 'Many Years From Now,' I read it in 2002. George was just 'the kid' to he and John, got the feeling they never took him all that seriously. Understandable I guess ... after all, Salieri wrote some nice compositions, though Mozart had no cause to take notice.

McCartney's book really gives insight into who he is ... modern-day Mozart or not, his ego/one upsman-ship is surprisingly out of control. Get this: He actually went to Yoko sometime in the 90s, and asked if he could change the songwriter credits on his songs to 'McCartney/Lennon.' I'm not sure which is more nuts, that he wanted to change the credit, or that he admitted to asking her (needless to say she said no). He spends much of the book going song by song - detailing his numerous contributions to John's songs, and disavowing any help on his.

Now there's an oldie....when was that post from? 2004?, 2005 maybe?

In any event, IMHO Harrison's "He's So Fine/My Sweet Lord" lawsuit showed the public two things about him:

1) The pious holy man had a definite mean streak when riled

2) He could write some of his very best material when in such a state of mind (in this case, that would be the excellent "This Song" from his "33 1/3" album, which, along with "Crackerbox Palace" are about the only songs to recommend off from it).

Here, check it out http://youtu.be/bsUkACDSIZY Embedding disabled....Boooo.

Outside of the Beatlesque humor of the clip, the whole thing is quite out of character for him and it's very interesting as a result.

Straight to my Netflix Queue, thanks ... it's just a couple years old, how'd I miss it?

I'm sure you're right, Paul is probably accurate about their various inputs into one anothers' songs. And yes he is a douche to say it in public - not to mention insane to even think of altering the Lennon-McCartney songwriter credit - but it's more than that. When you read his retellings of each set of circumstances in which he helped John out, it's always something along the lines, "John was feeling very insecure about the bridge on (song), so I gave him a chord or two, nudged him until he went the right direction." So smarmy and patronizing the way he approached it, it didn't seem he really liked John much.

As I read it I kept flashing back to that galactically inappropriate quote he gave a reporter the night John died :oyvey:

Was that an old post? Not sure how I stumbled upon it.

Out of character for George maybe, but that's a damn good video for its time. Judges' gavel banging his head in rhythm, court reporter typing on a Fender Rhodes. If by 'Beatle-esque' you mean fast-motion Benny Hill-type slapstick stuff, yeah I see that influence. At least there's a method to that kind of stuff though, at least they didn't go 'Every Little Thing' stupid.

The word 'trivia' - from the Latin 'trivis,' meaning knowledge - my knowledge of that video is that it was shot in the Los Angeles Superior Courthouse at 111 N. Hill Street ... that's either Department 3 or 4 with the squared wall tiles ... their dull oak finish fairly crying out for Liquid Gold as they always have.

Whadd'ya mean by "mean streak"?

It's a great song & video...but it is a mean spirited slap at the whole trial affair (I understand the bitterness, he lost afterall). Check out the vid again...it may be supposing a little too much, but I find it interesting that he rarely smiles (which is unlike him in these things) and the look in his eyes conveys the whole thing perfectly....the guy is pissed. It didn't happen very often with him, but every once in a great while, he would break character and lash out.....as he did here.

For someone who's material spent much time in his post-Beatles solo career being preachy, sanctimonious and ultimately dull, this is almost a total 180 in terms of attitude and subject matter. It's one of the reasons why, I believe anyways, it remains a highlight of his solo career.

I don't know anything about the vid setting itself....you know that courtroom? Did you practice there at one time or were you arraigned on some charges there or something? Ha!

Ha! Seriously though, Robert Pollard is one of the most important indie figures of our time. He single handedly deflates the tired, sterile, stodgy, pompous, pretentious music world with each of his low fi, DIY projects. Not to mention, he's probably the most prolific guy out there on the scene today, releasing several albums per year.

Be it Guided By Voices, Boston Spaceships, Circus Devils, his own solo career, et.al. , The guy really hasen't released anything not worthy of hearing. Who else can say such a thing since 1983? A: Nobody.

He's the Man, period. A true DIY hero and a continuing breath of fresh air in a stale, manufactured, hack dominated era of music.

I miss GBV.

Not only are they back touring...I understand a new album by the classic lineup might be in the works. Stay tuned.

Boston Spaceships are releasing a double CD entitled "Let It Beard" shortly....it's another classic by all advanced accounts

I've noticed lately there's lots of hit songs - many classics - that incorporate heavy cello parts: Pearl Jam's Jeremy, The Moments Love on a 2-Way Street, Good Vibrations, Poe's Angry Johnny, Little Past Little Rock, Overjoyed, Bittersweet Symphony. The Jay-Z/Alicia Keys hit 'Empire State of Mind' even samples the 2-Way Street cello.

Sooo ... I offer the first in my ongoing series: "Rock Hits with Cello"

"In this photo taken Wednesday Aug. 24, 2011, Yoandri Hernandez Garrido, 37, known as "Twenty-Four" shows his 12 fingers in Baracoa, Guantanamo province, Cuba. Hernandez is proud of his extra digits and calls them a blessing, saying they set him apart and enable him to make a living by scrambling up palm trees to cut coconuts and posing for photographs in this eastern Cuban city popular with tourists. Known as polydactyly, Hernandez's condition is relatively common, but it's rare for the extra digits to be so perfect."

This is what's stuck in my Trucks player right now and I can't get the damn thing out for nothing. I'm this close to ripping the player out of my dash with a pair of pliers. One of lifes challenges being 'Dad'. lol

Well, at least it isn't Miley Cyrus. But then again, I see Lindsay Lohan on there so...ouch.

It was the retro tone that caught my ear. That little bass line melody that goes thru the song's pretty infectious too but the video's hypnotic.

Just one dork's opinion, but I think "Tin Soldier" is as close as I'll ever get to admitting there's a perfect song out there. The song opens with this cool, mid-tempo melody, and through the first verse Steve Marriott slowly builds until he sounds like he's about to lose it completely...and then the chorus comes in with British soul star of that moment, guest singer P. P. Arnold handling most of the vocal chores. And then they come out of that first chorus into my favorite rock and roll moment of all time. Ian MacLagen starts pounding that Hammond organ like he's beating it with his fists, and drummer Kenny Jones starts smacking the crap outta his crash cymbal on every 2nd beat--which you're sort of not supposed to do, and especially not supposed to do a minute and change into a 3-minute song. And so then Little Stevie Marriott comes roaring in on vocals in that second verse like he's been possessed by James Brown and Aretha both, just shrieking and wailing away on mic and off (what the hell did the studio session for that look like?) They get to the chorus and he's just vamping and wailing off mic and on like his hair's on fire....and then in the third verse they bring it all back down and Marriott's crooning sweetly but slowly building. By the end of the verse he's back in full-on Otis mode, howling and barking the words into a "YEAH BABY!" as the band goes to the final chorus, and here he's matching Arnold's vocals in the same high register, roaring over them and sweeping the song into a final coda that sounds like a hurricane. For me that song is one of the great confluences of everything that was great about so many genres in the sixties, from the pop craftsmanship of The Beatles to the raw emotion of Memphis soul to the "anything goes" ethos that rock seemed to lose for a while after Woodstock.
