You'd take that over "God Only Knows"?

Good call, yes, a few years ago that was THEE gold standard. I think that damn HBO thing tainted it some.

Warmth of the Sun, Wendy, Girls on the Beach, Not Made for These Times, In My Room, Good Vibrations ... but really, Don't Worry Baby is my favorite. Lots of artists covered the song - that can taint an original too - but it's never faded for me.

Something about the lyric ... Quintessential California teen, but deftly tempered with that classic Brian Wilson vulnerability.

I guess I should've kept my mouth shut
When I started to brag about my car
But I can't back down now because
I pushed the other guys too far

Heard this song a few times recently with the Chilean miners, so I pulled out Joshua Tree couple nights ago. Good Gravy what an astonishing record ... as classic as any other. I can't name an album that's better.

Pick up this song @ 2:50 and give it two minutes. I dare you to tell me there has EVER been a more visceral, emotive singer ... the guy bleeds every word. And the Edge, wow. I'm not buying all that Paul Bunyan 'he taught himself guitar three months before their first album" nonsense. The sounds he gets and the way he uses them are magnificent, as unique as Bono's voice. At this point these two should really be mentioned in the company of Lennon-McCartney, Page-Plant.

Incidently, that album is a total headscratcher. Instead of doing what could've been an all time great album of drumming, he did bad zonked out covers. Proof positive that mid-70's California (and it's influences) was not a good place for someone like him to be. He simply never had the pipes to sing...well anything.

Dumb HBO show about an "extended" family of Mormon adulterers :oyvey:

HBO piggy-backed the first season of 'Big Love' right after The Sopranos during its final season, so unsurprisingly their abuse of that classic song was pretty widespread.

No way am I gonna click on that. As strange as it sounds, I think John Lennon played on that record, or was at least hanging out with Moon then. That mid-70s period was around the time he and Moon and Harry Nilsson were debauching themselves all over L.A.

'John from Cincinnati' was another HBO show that piggybacked The Sopranos at the end there, a damn good show I thought.

JFC was cancelled after a couple seasons, but they did choose a killer theme song ... I love this one.

Why Did ‘Big Love’ Change Its Credits? God Only Knows
By Dave Itzkoff

Perhaps the most surprising change in the new season of “Big Love” occurred before a single frame of the premiere episode had rolled: Gone was the familiar opening credit sequence that had introduced the show for three seasons, in which Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, ChloŽ Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin ice-skate their way through the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.”

In its place was a new (and rather, shall we say, “Mad Men”-esque) sequence that depicts the cast members falling through black space, accompanied by the Engineers song “Home.” Video of the new credits doesn’t appear to have hit the Web yet, but you can get a taste of it in these “Big Love” teaser trailers that HBO posted late last year, set to songs by Interpol and Animal Collective.

Around the ArtsBeat newsdesk, the new “Big Love” credits immediately polarized the two people discussing it: one loved the old sequence so much that he didn’t want “God Only Knows” played at his wedding for fear that people would immediately think of the show; the other said that she fast-forwarded through the old credits when she watched the show on demand.

Abusing a classic song like that - as the theme for a dumb TV show - is a greater sin than adultery :bash:

Ah, no wonder I didn't know what you were talking about. I remember seeing promos for that and just gave it the big el passo out of hand. I had zero interest in that stuff.

Yeah, you're right. A star studded cast backed Moon on it. What's sad about it is the fact that A) He doesn't even play on it and B) it wasn't intended as a joke.

You think about a Who track like the goofy "Cobwebs And Strange" from "A Quick One" and how wild and cool his drum breaks are on that, then think of what a solo album from him could've and should've been. All we got was this, this thing that I rank as one of the very worst albums ever made. It's just tragic.

This is sure to bring Buff in here guns a blazin', but I had grown so bored with Zeppelin (mainly due to years of serious oversaturation during high school & college) that I really find them to be nearly unlistenable. Dread here made the catalog interesting again thru their interpretations for about 2 years in the early 90's before the joke worn thin and it too, became very tiresome. The videos however, are a totally different story....they never get old Ha!

It drove the purists that I know totally nuts at the time. Evidently, it's the ultimate sin to make fun of LZ (go figure). At least the remaining Zeppelin guys get the joke, they actually approve of this stuff.....believe it or not.

Well, I'd say Sabbath was more important, due to it's established reputation and the fact that Dio pretty much pulled them off from the scrap heap for a couple of decent to good LP's. Incidently, I always thought that Dio suited Sabbath much better than the cartoonish, nasally voiced Ozzy. That's an opinion that has brought me much grief over the years, but I still stand by it.

Rainbow never really escaped the long shadow of Purple IMHO. They had some great players come and go over their career to no avail and they eventually ended up in MOR hell. They never really registered to be more than a footnote in Blackmore's career, so important is hardly a label I'd tag them with. "Long Live Rock And Roll" & "On Stage" were the albums I've held onto and still have to this day....although, I confess, neither have seen the turntable in well over 15 years.

Yeah, I've gotta concur. Rainbow did manage a few gems with Dio singing but they really didn't have any notoriety in America til Joe Lynn Turner sang with 'em (excluding a few of the graham bonnet songs). As for the quality of music, it was high in Rainbow, in my opinion.

But in Sabbath, you had a whole new incarnation and monster. The sound of Sabbath changed SO much with Dio, not only in the vox but the general theme of the tunes and the structure of the songs. They did so much more than they could do with Ozzy in the band (i agree that ozzy would be in 2nd place in the pantheon of sabbath voices). The two albums they put together were good overall but with some seminal metal tunes like Neon Knights, Children of the Sea, and Heaven and Hell. Sabbath's gems were greater than Rainbow's, which means my vote is for Sabbath.

Memorable tunes in the Dio era Sabbath far exceed those from his Rainbow days...of which only LLRNR and Kill The King come to my mind without looking. That doesn't mean I'm saying the Rainbow stuff sucked, it was okay, but most of it was far from memorable.

Yup, I remember those songs now that you mention them. Always heard Blackmore was difficult to work with as well, so numerous personel changes in his groups were not surprising....to be honest, I never thought he was all that anyways.

It's one thing to have preferences.

It's another thing to sit on the sidelines and criticize those who are actually engaged in the creative process.

Sorry - but I can't stand music critics.

Even when I don't particularly care for a particular piece of music, I still respect the fact that someone put their heart and soul into it.

There's a reason why I had to go the iggy route with him Bombay, he's impossible to discuss a subject with if your view is anything other than his. It turns into something similar to his political posts and basically I got tired of that. I'm anxious to see what the general consensus about Tom Morello is here. He's definitely got a signature sound. Some say he relies too much on effects but I think you're either good or not good, regardless of effects. Morello is good, IMO. De La Rocha severely limits what that group can do but he does the 'guerilla metal' thing well. Tire Me is my favorite Rage song.

But you listen to Audioslave, say 'Like A Stone', and you can see that Morello's got some nuance and finesse to his playing, for sure regardless of the effects he's utilizing.

As for Woody, that really brings back memories. My grandparents had some 78's of his stuff. I musta heard Dustbowl Blues a million times. You can hear his stuff all over Johnny Cash's stuff.

Your "impossible to discuss with him" statement is a remarkable case of "pot/kettle/black" insofar as you have earned a rep for being as opinionated and self-important as it gets where music is concerned.

Bethel is on the other side of the state, it's where the original Woodstock was held and is generally out of my striking distance. Jeff Beck humiliates himself before kickoff at Wembley today ... that same don't-give-a-crap, ragged, sloppy style he's had for twenty or thirty years now. It's a damn shame really.

Here he is onstage solo in LA about ten years ago, out of tune, sapping every ounce of energy out of a song normally overflowing with it. Then Rod Stewart "surprises" him with a walk-on. Beck falls apart in a kind of faux shock, stops playing and staggers away leaving Rod on his own. Actually this behavior might kinda add up, maybe he's been riding the white horse all this time ???

Patton is the man, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle are brilliant.

Right now, I decided to whip out Leitmotif from Dredg -- a band I really enjoy, have since the early 00's. A lot more raw than their latest efforts, but I like the passion a bit more. Guitar is a lot more crunchy, solid tones without as much delay and other effects that can really water some music down.

I'm down with the two-criteria ranking, but I'm thinking Eddie might be more like a Vai/Satriani soloist, especially with VH's revolving door of singers. He's an amazing technician, but I think the flashy brilliance that attracts us to these guys is out of proportion to its musical relevance. How often do these wild, flailing solos "make" a great song? You can only listen to Eruption so many times before you want to move on to the real songs.

How about this for an example. Roy Bittan's piano on the Springsteen classic 'Jungleland.' I don't remember really noticing the piano back then, but now when you listen closely, the damn song is ALL about the piano. He's "makes" the song without resorting to histrionics.

The Doors Live in Vancouver 1970. Here's a quick, off the cuff review:

I had the bootleg of this show for years (the above clip is audio from the bootleg version)and got an advance copy of it's official issue this AM. As usual with Bright Midnight releases, the sound has been cleaned up to the point of being pretty amazing for tapes recorded in 1970. This show isn't a soundboard recording (recorded on a reel to reel using only two microphones) so the sonic accomplishment is even more impressive.

About the usual night for Jim vocally here on this tour (meaning he seems only partially interested) and the band performs it's usual concert staples with it's typical aplomb (they played pretty much the same set all throughout this tour). No real surprises other than the rare appearance of "Love Me Two Times" and band going into a bit of "St. James Infirmary" & "Fever" during the instrumental break of "Light My Fire".

The reason this set stands out are the blues covers that Albert King performs with them. King's presence pushes the band and you can hear the energy level and enthusiasm increase notably on the tracks that feature him. Can a guest appearance on only four tracks make that much of a difference? The answer is yes.

3 1/2 out of a possible 5 stars...it's a fine set for Doors fanatics and collectors. For the passive fan, it's the typical 1970 tour performance. The performance is not on par with the best of Bright Midnight's 1970 releases (notably Detroit, NY, Pittsbugh & the Aquarius Second Performance) and nothing really all that indespensible. This is especially true since the King tracks (the set's main selling point) should be readily available on iTunes.

If anyone wants my old bootleg of this show, PM me and we'll work something out.

Okay everybody, this didn't turn into the riddle I thought it would ... ???

This song was written by LABF, and that's him on guitar. BOW DOWN TO HIM!

The three other musicians are pretty successful, well known. I'd tell you who they are, but LA with that bunker mentality of his, I better wait for clearance.

DEFINITELY DO click over to YouTube on this one ... it was recorded at a place called "Ebbets Field" in Denver. Hard to believe, but I never heard of it.

The slide/steel guitar there is an eye-opener, very nice. Always loved that ending on the major-7th. Usually kinda hokey, but it works here.

I have always just HATED that band and then one day it hit me ... I don't hate the band I hate the singer.

Musically they are GREAT , vocally not so much.

I love hearing other people do Zep or Page without Plant playing Zep.

Replace him with Coverdale and you got something there ...

I also enjoyed the live at the greek with Page and the black crows doing all Zep stuff ... But Plant so kills that band for me.

We really enjoyed Rob Halford tonight. Dude is really a terrific vocalist and had a rock solid band behind him. I'm not familiar with Judas Priest, but my buddy Levy is and came along with Laurie and I and brought a woman named Beth. Anyway, Levy is familiar with Priest and said they only played about a half dozen of their songs. I have to admit that my favorite part of the show was when they played The Green Manalishi, written by Fleetwood Mac's original guitarist, Peter Green, followed immediately by an excellent metalised version of Joan Baez' song Diamonds and Rust. Just sensational. Halford came out with a shaved head, reflective aviator shades, and a knee length black leather coat covered with metal studs about the shoulder area. Really, really good show. We sat dead center in the first row of the balcony, one of the few places in the small venue that actually has seats.

The warmup band was called Phil M - I was told it was pronounced Film, and they pretty much sucked. Decent on their instruments, the drummer is from the band Slayer, but their attempts to vocalize were brutal. Almost comical, but too bad for that.

Saw Roger McGuinn play a few months ago in the basement of a church on East Colfax. He told the story of how he came to write this song. Peter Fonda had flown to NY to try to persuade Dylan to write the theme song for Easy Rider, and found him in a bar in the East Village. Dylan wrote 'The River Flows' on a bar napkin, handed it to Fonda, and said 'give it to McGuinn, he'll know what to do' so Roger ended up writing The Ballad of Easy Rider.

Have you ever heard of Don Mock?

He was a really popular teacher at G.I.T. for many years.

He lives in Seattle and performs at The Christoff Gallery every Tuesday.

Check him out sometime - you won't be disappointed.

Okay, the Mix Lounge down in Georgetown ... G-town is a very hip area here. Definitely.

Love the guy on fretless bass, I love me some fretless bass (although I guess that's missing the point of the video right?)

JMO here, but I think they've held up quite well and the fact that so very few have imitated that sound, is making them sound fresher and more unique with each passing year.

If anything, Syncronicity is the offering that isn't aging very well and that's mainly due to it's cliched early 80's big production sound. That sound screams the word "dated" when heard today.

This one slays me every time, this version.

Mick rushes the tempo both times into the chorus, but that last one, that's a freight train. Something to do with the Stevie-Lindsey personal dynamic I guess.
