Been on a Stones DVD marathon this past week. Watched "Bridges to Babylon" Tour, (smokin!') "Shine a Light," and "Rock and Roll Circus."

I just acquired the remastered Exile on main St. Stupendous stuff.

Hey Dag, Is the remastering really noticable enough to purchase this release yet again or would it be best to just keep the original and go to iTunes or a friend and get the extra tracks instead?

I ask because when it comes to reissues, I've become really tired over the years of buying the same titles again and again due to claims that they've been remixed or remastered, only to find the difference in the "remastered" sound to be extremely slight to not noticable at all.

Wanna thank Dagmar for comfirming the suspicions on the Exile release. Borrowed a copy the other day and the remastering job is really nothing special at all. Unless you're a collector, I'd recommend keeping your original copy you and getting the extra tracks elsewhere for a fraction of the cost of this rerelease.

Had a chance to listen, and I thought they did a fine job with the re-mastering.

The low end and lower mids are tighter and more focused, and it sounds like they did some subtle limiting to bring the overall output level up without squashing any of the dynamics.

Definitely worth a spin.

New Teenage Fanclub album, their first in more than 5 years, just released in the USA.

Quick thoughts:

No major surprises here, it's the same Big Star/Byrds/Beach Boys mix that they've been messing with for the past four albums. That means the top notch, trademark three-part harmonies, jangly leads and rhythms, catchy hooks and melodies are all still present and accounted for. They are getting softer in their approach however and at times almost come across as echoing mid-70's California soft rock Frankensteins like Firefall and Pablo Cruise. A track here and there faintly recalls the old days of Thirteen (mainly "Shock And Awe" ), but fans of the early albums will be just as disappointed by this as they have been with the Fanclub's releases since 1995.
The rest is graceful, classic guitar pop by nothing short of grade A craftsmen. The type of thing that has become a true anachronism these days.

A few quick thoughts here:

1) The Gorillaz @ the #1 spot? I thought the average NPR listener was over 14 years old, guess I was wrong.

2) The Gorillaz & The National over The Black Keys?? Phleeze. That's just plain wrong.

3) IMHO, The Dead Weather is really nothing special. My guess is it's making it on the the star power of it's members alone. I call it the Blind Faith syndrome. Blind Faith was a great lineup on paper as well and the album they put forth was decent, but no where near as great as what was expected of the sum of the band's parts.

4) I could never understand what the big deal is over Vampire Weekend either.

5) Broken Social Scene is garbage. Suffered through a BSS show a couple of years ago. The only notable thing about it was the band has 4 to 5 guitar players who collectively don't add up to one good one. Unquestionably the worst band to come out of Canada since Triumph.

6) Is anyone else puzzled by bands totally redoing entire classic rock albums?
I give The Flaming Lips high marks for the decent attempt to redo the entire album of Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. It couldn't have been easy and the job they did was okay, but was it really necessary? I hope it's not a sign that they're run out of their own ideas.

The Flaming Lips thing was for a New Years show, and it got such a good reaction they did it at a couple of festivals and got such a huge reaction and so many requests that they decided to record it, it was done quickly.

The Gorillaz have a few good singles, they are not an album band, although Bobby Womack is brilliant.

The National are brilliant.

It's all opinions, Black Keys can't really be compared to the National or Gorillaz. Very different styles.

Granted. It still seems to me to be the onset of a trend though, not for the FL's, but for the genre at large. I'm concerned about it for the genre because, IMHO, it seems like such a backward thing to do....unless they tweak it to almost unrecognizable levels of course.

The Gorillaz have a few good singles, they are not an album band, although Bobby Womack is brilliant.

I'm definitely NOT a fan of them, but the cameo choices the people behind it make are both surprising and smart. Resurrecting Womack is a great example, the jaw dropper for me is when they got Mark E. Smith to do a track.

The National are brilliant.

It's all opinions, Black Keys can't really be compared to the National or Gorillaz. Very different styles.

True. I don't mind The National at all, just feel that the Black Keys latest is far more interesting and deserving of the #1 spot.

Hmmm....heard most these albums, but I'll stick to the top 10:

-Like the Gorillaz album alright (the song Lou Reed features on is great), not my #1 by any stretch.

-High Violet is top 3 for me easy.

-Haven't gotten into the Black Key's new album enough to have a verdict, but liked it first couple spins.

-Broken Bells...eh. I love the Shins, but only a couple songs from this one really struck me.

-Enjoyed the LCD Soundsystem album and the new Vampire Weekend. Not sure they are top 10 material for me, but I wasn't disappointed by either one.

-Beach House might be my favorite of the year. Definitely up there.

-Not on the Mumford bandwagon at all. God knows I have friends who have tried to win me over.

-Spoon's Transference is a little underrated on the whole, I think. I'm a big fan of theirs, and I liked this album's direction and production, even if it isn't the classic that Kill the Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga are.

-Sleigh Bells Tell Em is just a kick ass album. Perfect for summer. Love it.

5) Broken Social Scene is garbage. Suffered through a BSS show a couple of years ago. The only notable thing about it was the band has 4 to 5 guitar players who collectively don't add up to one good one. Unquestionably the worst band to come out of Canada since Triumph.

Uh, Nickelback? I like BSS alright. They've put out some good albums, but they do have a sound that is kind of muddled, hazy and meandering even in studio. I think it works, but I can see it not translating great live or not appealing to a lot of people.

I listed to that cover album once, didn't need to hear it again. I thought the Lips last album, Embryonic, was really solid, so I think they are still going strong. Just a side project that might get some curious listens, but nothing to remember too long.

That's some pretty cool stuff there, kudos to you Sir!

Just a heads up, the thing doesn't have an official US release date until September, yet drops in the UK on July 12th. Given the global nature of music these days I have no idea why. If you need any help "finding" it let me know.

I love the Flaming Lips, saw them twice, once at Red Rocks. Embryonic was good, not as good as the previous releases since the Soft Bulletin (although Evil is one of my all time favorites of theirs) but that Karen O song drove me nuts. Hated it.

On a Flaming Lips note, has anyone ever down the Zaireeka CD with all 4 at once?

http://www.exclaim.ca/images/up-zaireekaLG.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaireeka

When I bought the Spoonful weighs a ton cd singles in the late 90's they had a song from Zaireeka on 2 b sides that played side by side were amazing, but never the same.

Always wanted to get 4 friends together in a parking lot and blast it.

Well Kid, you got me there, I had totally blocked Nickelback out of my mind.
BSS is henceforth, the worst and most irritating band out of Canada since the dreaded Nickelback. ;D

Will do, the lineup is impressive and Peter Buck rarely (if ever) participates in anything that isn't totally worthwhile

Tired Pony
Tired Pony was formed by Gary Lightbody (of Snow Patrol), who had a "long-term ambition" of making a country album.[1] He revealed the project's existence in May 2009. In the interview, he expressed his love for country music, which he said he had loved for a long time: "I always thought I had a country album in me and it turns out I did."[2] The rest of Snow Patrol expressed excitement for their band-mate, "delighted that [Lightbody was] getting to exorcise all his crazy ideas."[3] In October 2009, Lightbody in his blog on Snow Patrol's website revealed the members of the group to be Richard Colburn (of Belle & Sebastian), Iain Archer, singer Miriam Kaufmann (Archer's wife), and Jacknife Lee. He talked about two more members whom he was very excited about, but didn't name them.[4][5] He also stated that the album won't be country as was being reported,[2][6][7][8] but would be "country-tinged".[4] In January 2010, Hot Press reported Peter Buck (of R.E.M.) to be a member of the group. Lightbody described Buck as one of his "all-time heroes" and admired his talent for playing a variety of instruments.[5] Lightbody looks at the project as something he has "wanted to get out of [his] system", and said that "[he doesn't] know whether people will dig it or not."[2] He has expressed doubts about the commercial viability of the group's work, mainly in the United States.[9]

If you have anything bad to say, I don't wanna hear it.

She cut the Jay-Z rap-crap out, and completely re-worked the whole thing ("Broken Down").

Now her version is approaching "classic" status very quickly, though it's been barely a year since Jay-Z released his "version."

My new Sansa Clip and earbuds both arrived yesterday.

New Clip accepts mini-cards, with full artist catalogs and/or varieties of styles and mixes available.

Three years with a Clip now, just gotta say iPods are strictly for posers .... the Shuffle at near twice the price is anyway. It doesn't even have a display.

The 4 gb Sansa Clip PLUS I just got was $42 with free shipping (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110554661712&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXS%3F&GUID=5896b1b71290a06c1d946d04fe8537ed&itemid=110554661712&ff4=263602_263622#ht_2991wt_1137). There are plain Sansa Clips, no "Plus" and no mini-SD card, selling for less.

http://images.highspeedbackbone.net/skuimages/large/S190-7262-vendor-main01-mm.jpg

These earbuds are pretty impressive too, best I've ever had ... just $24 also free shipping. (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-SONY-MDR-XB40EX-Earphone-MDR-XB40-EX-Headphones-/200485020909?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item2eadd6a4ed#ht_1703wt_911). They're $90 retail, selling for minimum $46 with shipping, and up to $95 with shipping (http://www.google.com/products?rlz=1C1CHNV_enUS384&q=SONY%20MDR-XB40EX&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wf) everywhere else. And that frequency response is just sick ... the numbers anyway.

Should be noted the Sansa earbuds that come with the Clips are garbage at best ... I gave mine to my dog.

Your Nano probably has more memory, it's good for video, too ... the Clip is audio only, plus voice recorder and FM radio.

I had a 2 gb Clip for three years ... new Clip-PLUS is 4, they have 8 too. But the Clip-PLUS has the micro-SD card ... 32 gb capacity each, so storage is basically unlimited. You can copy your own stuff on the mini-cards, or buy artists' albums, catalogs, etc.

The iPod Shuffle is the comparison for the Sansa Clip. The reviews unanimously favor the Clip, pointing out it has a 5-band EQ (Shuffle no tone controls), a display (Shuffle none), voice recorder, FM radio, non-proprietary mini-USB connector. iPod wins in two categories: 1) Supports Mac, 2) iTunes connectivity ROFL!

And I hadn't much thought about sound quality, but I just came across this:

When the initial press release was out on the Clip it stated that it had the best sound quality on the market. I sneered at that statement and I could not wait to get my hands on one and bust their marketing hype, you know how much I love marketing hype. =P But I could not bust that marketing hype, it sounds fantastic paired up with my Future Sonics Atrio IEM and it even plays very well with my Sennheiser HD650s on a Cardas cable. There are plenty of people to back me up on this too. Martin, abi's in-house headphone expert and reviewer has paired his up with a custom cable, Headsix Amp, and Sennheiser HD650's. He states that it's the best sound stage he has come across in an MP3 player.

I do, I have two of them....along with an iPod, a turntable, dual cassette deck and a reel to reel.

All still get usage as well.

Ha!

I also have a couple of old Tascam portastudio recorders (a 4 track and an 8 track) that date from the late 80's/early 90's that are cassette based. You're a musician, so I know you must've run across some of the old Tascams at some point. Used to be a lot of fun to fool around with those things.

We recorded our first demo on a Tascam 4-track. We thought it was something else! That reminds me...our old drummer contacted me recently and said that he had taken those tracks and mixed them digitally. I'm interested in hearing that after working with Logic and Pro Tools for so long. An old analog 4-track mix should be fun.

The cassette Tascams are basically worthless today, but they were a lot of fun then. Probably still good for a raw, garage type sound. Maybe that's why I still hold onto them, just in case I ever get something like that going again.

Just like photographers use older cameras to achieve certain stylistic bends in their work, when you are producing music its good to be creative with all elements on the palette.

I play basically everything you can fit in a rock band...except for real piano playing. The last song I recorded I played everything except for guitar 2.

Awesome.

I pretty much stick to guitar, but I've been working on my mandolin skills lately. Never formally taught myself the bass, but that has been real easy to pick-up and go. I like messing with keys and synths for ****s. That is about where I am at. I've tried drums, but it just ain't me.

Everybody can "play bass" but few can play it well. You have to be able to find the pocket and work it.

As for drums, there's not a better feeling than getting locked in on the drum kit.

The early "spooky" themed stuff, Dominance and Submission, etc... that was okay, but I was a bit "out of step" with other BOC fans ... sure, I liked 'Don't Fear the Reaper,' but the rest of Agents of Fortune was where the action was, for me. Morning Final, Sinful Love, and Tattoo Vampire great examples:

Some good misfortune in my sophomore year caused me to mistakenly buy Frampton, a studio record, instead of Frampton Comes Alive. To this day Frampton is one of my Top 10 favorite albums. Even in a castle it's the kitchen. Just like BOC though, it wasn't Show me the Way or Baby I Love Your Way that did it for me ... it was Fanfare, Crying Clown, Nowhere's Too Far, and this gem here.

The first two BOC albums I really like a lot. No surprise really since I love the production of those two records and I'm basically a devotee/student of Richard Meltzer. I always found Agents (which is an undeniable classic) to be interesting because of the vague elements of Doo Wop (True Confessions), collaborations with Patti Smith and an overall lightening up of the sound. Not exactly the type of things mid-70's hard rock acts were doing at the time, then again, BOC was far more interesting than any of those bands right up to Fire Of Unknown Origin. After that album, they ran out of gas for good.

Exactly, not at all like other 70's arena-rockers ... and not like their spooky B&W period, either, not sure how that image-marketing plan got started.

Glad you like Agents, great points about Patty Smith narrating and singing on Vera Gemini, and the quirky True Confessions vocal style - that song written by Alan Lanier, Patti Smith's longtime husband or significant other.

Side Two though, wow. I just got blasted with it again here on YouTube, pretty powerful. Sinful Love ... Tattoo Vampire ... Morning Final ... Tenderloin ... amazing 4 in a row, then finish the album with Debbie Denise, a bitter-sweet lament for the R&R widow, much like Kiss's Beth.

Thanks for the Meltzer reference, this is a great article. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Meltzer)

You better catch him while you can by the sounds of what I've heard. He came through my area touring with Yes a couple of months ago and while I didn't go (I would've liked to have seen what was left of Yes), hearing from people who did said it was a subpar, lifeless show by both acts.

Frampton and Yes came through here a few weeks back. I was telling LABF how I missed getting the last couppla reserved seats by an hour or two.

Dunno what your friends saw, he's always great live. Yes does have Rick Wakeman's son on keyboards now, and they always were pretty much a snoozer live, soooo...

I deleted this because I didn't want to get into another flame war and/or detract from the makings of a good BOC discussion, but it's true. Maybe an off night for them both or something, but yeah, they came away pretty disappointed by both performances.

I didn't mind Mirrors, but for some reason, never picked it up. Same thing goes for Secret Treaties & Spectres...I may have to do something about that soon as the entire catalog is cheap enough to pick up a lot of it for very little.

Meltzer is the Man to me, one of the guiding lights. I own almost all his books and reread them often. A Whore Just Like the Rest: The Music Writings of Richard Meltzer is the one I'd highly recommended. A great overview of his titles and every bit as insightful (and maybe moreso) than anything Bangs ever wrote.

Agents and Frampton ... two of my Top Ten albums, nice

Hogan, I don't get how PF's live performance could be panned like that. Everybody has off-nights of course, but Frampton's energy and charisma live - even today - are hard to question. Plus there's that whole thing caled Frampton Comes A-LIVE?

Here's another live classic ... on the Midnight Special, just four months before 'Comes Alive!' was released.

Yeah, I know who Xavier is and I respect what he's done. In retrospect however, it's kinda difficult to call Agents a heavy metal album. Sure it has elements of it, but it also has elements of prog rock and new wave in it as well and one style doesn't seem to dominate the other.

Who's bagging on Bangs? ??? What I ment was where Bangs would sometimes wander off into the abstract in his writing, Meltzer does not and that's more in tune with my sensibilities.

Again Buff, I wasn't there, just reporting from people who were. It was probably an off night or it could've been the venue itself if Frampton & Yes were bummed playing in basically a bar's backyard. I dunno. (incidently, they've had a bunch of now B-list bands play there the last couple of years and several gave bad performances...Heart, Molly Hatchet & Foreigner come to mind as ones people were particularly upset about).

And let's be honest here, Frampton Comes Alive may be a 70's signpost live album (and responsible for a mega ton of double live albums being released in the mid 70's...whether or not that's a good thing is entirely up to the individual), but to expect the same type of performance some 30+ years later night after night is an impossible task for anyone.

You're right ... the live version especially. The lyric never moved me by itself, but you really feel it in the performance, it drips pain.

And speaking of "dripping pain" .... guys, try to broaden your thinking here a minute, . . . B r o a d e n . . . for another top-notch pain-dripper, the Brooks and Dunn classic Neon Moon.

Layered over a calypso-like backbeat, sittin' in the proverbial bar cross the railroad tracks, this poor bastard seethes sadness and desperation. "Don't know how many lies that I've lied, tellin' my poor heart she'll come back someday."

Dunno about you, but I know that bar, I've been there.

So, we're back in the studio now.

This is my first recording in like 5 years, and we were eager to just get something done so lay off some of the idiosyncrasies. I think we're sound good for having literally like 15 minutes of practice together... it's just me (drums) and vince (bass) ... but I'll also record percussion, and we have violin, piano and a guy who plays just about everything... but I was just eager to get this up:

Never cared for Ten Years After, but that's probably my own character flaw. I always caught on to Alvin Lee's stuff, and could play it play it fairly quickly. I guess I figure anybody I can play like must not be all that great :~ohyah!:

Same thing with Gary Richrath. Not that I can play what he plays, more that I don't want to.

Yeah, I always thought Kevin Cronin seemed like a very very cool guy. Some time later I saw him in interviews, and he definitely is that. He's the kind of guy you wish you knew in "real life."

On the other hand, another arena rock headliner, same time frame and from the same area, it always seemed to me Dennis DeYoung was a real d!ck .. and whadd'ya know, some time later, on Behind the Music I think, turned out I was right about him, too :~ohyah!:

They did rock, though. You can call their stuff sappy, and I guess it was. But I loved it anyway ...

According to Billboard, Chicago was the leading U.S. singles charting group during the 1970s.

They have sold over 38 million units in the U.S., with 22 gold, 18 platinum, and 8 multi-platinum albums.

Over the course of their career they have charted five No. 1 albums, and have had 21 top ten hits.
Wow, there's a few things you didn't know.

So why do I never meet anybody else who likes Chicago? Can't swing a dead cat without hitting a swarm of Eagles fans, but Chicago fans apparently lurk in the shadows or something.

Why is Jimmy Pankow never recognized as one of the great pop songwriters (which he is)?

Why is Terry Kath never recognized as one of the great guitar players (which he was, he was Hendrix' favorite)?

Where are all these fans hiding? ???

I like Chicago....to a point. The first two albums are really solid and I'd recommend them to anyone. After that though, things get spotty....afterall, how many groups can keep cranking out high quality double LP's year in and year out? That's impossible for any band. They were also burdened by some of the very worst production in the history of popular music in the 70's (totally the fault of James William Guercio, a man who should've never been allowed even close to a mixing board).
I'd be okay with any Chicago release (save that horrid live album from Carnegie Hall) up to Hot Streets....that album was the beginning of the end IMHO.

That said, I'd still take Blood, Sweat & Tears Child Is The Father To The Man over any of them...not only because it beat Chicago to the punch but also because of Al Kooper being the driving force behind it.

You're so right about Guercio ... in addition to the flat, muddy sound, my recollection is that those first couple albums were in mono, at Guercio's insistence and despite the fact stereo was pretty commonplace by then.

Can't imagine how a man of Guercio's dubious talent made it as far as he did ... he was even given control of and directed a major motion picture. 'Electra-Glide in Blue," starring the second best-known acquitted murderer-actor Robert Blake. If you're ever feeling particularly masochistic, throw it up on your Netflix queue and give it a look. I don't think I've ever seen a more convoluted mishmash of storylines, scenes and shots. The thing makes virtually no sense at all.

I never heard that before, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Those albums could've been so much greater than they were with someone competent behind the board. My big question is why did the band put up with him? It must've been at the insistance of Columbia records or something.

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="17"height="17"data="http://www.uploadmusic.org/musicplayer.swf?song_url=http://www.uploadmusic.org/MUSIC/4123961281759512.mp3&autoplay=false"><param name="movie"value="http://www.uploadmusic.org/musicplayer.swf song_url=http://www.uploadmusic.org/MUSIC/4123961281759512.mp3&song_title=uploadmusic.org&autoplay=false"/>

Not a bad draft at all Smurf. I would be intersted in hearing the final product.

Even the solos?

Wow - that would be no small achievement. :notworthy

Even the solos?

Wow - that would be no small achievement. :notworthy

Well hold on, let me clarify that a bit ... it's not so much that I could play LIKE him, it was more there was no MYSTERY to anything he played. I'm no kind of prodigy I assure you, but I could see all the notes he played in my head without even thinking about it. Might sound a bit odd that I admire solos merely because they're hard to figure out, but that's just me.

Take this one, their biggest hit ... the first 22 seconds there sound great, really really great. But you know what I mean LA, it's all one simple pentatonic scale: Everything starts on the same base fret, lower strings all use the same two fret jump, the higher B and E strings a 3 fret jump, extending up two more frets for the higher stuff.

Plus it was a small sample size ... I was maybe 16 and we tried out just a couple of their songs ... when it comes to fast, 3-chord blues-based rock, there's a helluva lot to choose from. And come to think of it, there was this loud, irritating kid from New York always hanging around, trying to play guitar and bass, screaming in our faces about how great Woodstock was, and how he knew "exactly where that farm is." Only time he ever left us in peace that summer was when he went down to the Cooper to see Star Wars again (and again and again and again). Guys like him had no business visiting Arvada, Colorado, much less moving there permanently.

Actually, I might've made a breakthrough here ... I think he was the real reason I didn't much like Ten Years After :~ohyah!:

BroncoBuff
08-14-2010, 07:51 PM
And speaking of "small sample size" ... where tf did this guy's voice come from? I'd heard of Dean Castronovo the drummer, he's played all around with lots of people. But this was a real eye-opener.

Journey hustles that little elfish Arnel Pineda off the stage (bastard child of Steve Perry is my working theory), turn Dean's mic up, and damn! Guy could front a band all on his own.

Jump to 1:10, and if you can make it through yet another technically-awesome-but-ultimately-aimless-and-repetitive Neal Schon solo, this voice should really grab you:

Without looking them up, they sound a bit like Jefferson Starship. Singer sounds alternately like Bryan Adams and Steve Perry.

Okay I'll look them up: Never heard of the guy, but "The Storm" included Gregg Rolie, Steve Smith and Ross Valory?! All victims of the tidal wave that was Steve Perry's insecure ego ... they don't sound at all like Journey though ... they opened for Bryan Adams and Peter Framptopn, nice! Yeah, some notable talent in that group but turned out to be more generic AOR stuff that sounded like all the other Orion The Hunter (members of Boston), GTR (members of Genesis and Asia), Archangels (Double Trouble)-type bands--big names, underwhelming music.

AC/DC certainly casts a very long shadow Smiling, good examples there.

A lot of people bag on Echo & The Bunnymen, but they were really inventive and challenging IMHO. I'm not a Coldplay fan at all, but they did a decent job with the Lips Like Sugar cover.

This one always seemed like a bit of a stretch to me, but some mistook this for Bob Dylan

This band is amazing they have a drummer that just busted the crap out of his drums and to end their set he had an incredible drum solo.

The lead singer has so much passion for his music he is a pleasure to watch.

REO is from Champaign, IL and we did a gig with them back in 1974! GReat guys and old homies! They rocked the midwest for years!

Can't tell you how many time I saw REO at the Red Lion in Champaign. They were great as a bar/cover band. Sympathy For the Devil was their big song then. It was all downhill after the fired singer Terry Lutrell. Cheap Trick was on the same circuit. Their big song was Suffragette City. I always thought the Finchley Boys would be the band that emerged from that fray.

Cheap Trick doing Suffergette City? I can see that.
Love that band. Bun E was so cool to us and Neilson was just the biggest dick, meeting him was just a huge downer.

Never really cared for Trower solo, I'll pass and stay with Procol Harum instead.

That's the way it always was, Carlos was great and Neilson was a dick. And they really rocked Suffragette City.

I was a huge Procol Harum fan (still wish they'd tour the US one more time), but Trower's first solo album - Bridge Of Sighs - is a truly fine record. I haven't heard the ones LA recommended, but I'll give a listen.

Rick Neilson & Billy Zoom of X were the biggest aholes I ever ran across. Of the two though, Neilson was the worst. I give the other members of the band all the credit in the world for putting up with that guy for as long as they have.

^ I've met Rick Neilson and have hung out with him on several occasions.

On one of these occasions, he even let me play his notorious five-necked checkerboard guitar while he was chatting with fans and signing autographs after a concert. I still have the photos up on the wall in my home studio.

Rick always impressed me as a really friendly, humorous, and down-to-earth-guy.

Genius band. Have seen them 11 times and drank with them in Nice n Sleazy's in Glasgow, the pub in the Rock Action sleeve. Excellent choice sir.

I'm incredibly jealous.

They came to Minneapolis a while ago and I missed out. One of my bucket list item's is seeing them before I pass on.

They need to come out this way more.

If I can get into school over there, I'd be ragin' at their shows all the time. Well, not ragin'. . . but having fun.

Man, I was not a fan of that band at all....but the skimpy outfits she wore in the videos made them worth watching (every 15 minutes they showed up on MTV in '82 anyways).

You mentioned the US Festival, did you go by chance?

1983. Saturday and Sunday, though I was a metalhead so Saturday turned out to be a major eye opener for a guy who thought the only viable ear candy at the time was metal! Boingo, INXS, and The Clash blew me away. Of course, on Sunday, yours truly was a pig in slop, in spite of Van Halen's dowright embarrassing performance...lol.

Triumph, Priest, and the Scorpions were unbelievable.

As for Missing Persons, they have always been a guilty pleasure. I like the tempo and the guitar sound. Dale was just 'different' enough to keep me listening and the little outfits kept a hormone laden teenage dude interested for sure. Did you go to Us?

Nah, I was fresh outta high school and so broke at the time...there was no way I could travel cross country for that, no matter how much I wanted to.

I remember somehow stumbling across VH1's rebroadcast of the performances this summer and then following up on youtube for the rest. Great stuff from a largely forgotton music festival. That was The Clash's final performance w/ Mick Jones BTW...you're so lucky to have seen that....Goddamn, I miss Joe Strummer :(

Yeah, I wasn't a fan at all but, Bozio's skimpy outfits is what I remember most about Missing Persons. Her husband on drums was an ex-Zappa guy who definitely had great drumming chops, but did his best to hide them. It all smacked of a cash grab to me, but there were far worse things on the landscape at that time, so....

I think it was the "Words" video that had most of us late teen/early 20's guys with our wangs in our hand goin'.......

Just checked these guys out for the 15th time. New CD is kickin'. If you dig Traditional Irish with a spot of contemporary arrangement, Lunasa is the group. I love how the guitar is essentially percussive in this music.

The tune is from the "Eat It" record.

I wish I could find the rest of the concert!

But damn, is he high.

Yep.

Definitely looks like he has availed himself of a not inconsiderable quantity of Peruvian Love Dust in this video. Yikes!
