Ahhh Let It Be....the prototype of the dysfunctional band flick that documentaries like Dig!, Some Kind Of Monster and even I Am Trying To Break Your Heart all owe their very existance to. I've never seen the entire movie, although I must've seen most of it because I feel like I have seen nearly all the clips available.

I've never seen Magical Mystery Tour either, so there ya go.

TV was in town last week here, and I wasnt able to check 'em out. Cool stuff. They have hit on something truely original in the modern genre. I can dig it even if they do only produce half of a good album for the most part.

Hot Chip were quality for the most part in the live setting. There were 5...yes 5 keyboardists on stage at the same time. Overkill? Yes. There are literally only so many frequencies that cut through in the types of halls that those guys are playing, and you cant hear them all.

I'm looking forward to Kings of Leon. It should be a good old-fashioned rock show.

If it's the same show that was here last week, there are two opening bands - Stills, who were not bad, and We Are Scientists, who were bad. JMO, of course. Kings of Leon were worth the wait.

The Stills arent bad. Havent seen 'em face-to-4x12, but they have a nice Brit-pop-meets-Guster'y sound.

I love good live music, so I hope that they can put something nice together for us. It sucks when you show up to players that arent excited about playing. It also sucks when they suck.

It really sucks when the headliner plays an hour or less. Band of Horses played for a little under an hour when I saw them last. Fun live stuff, but you need to play to the price of the ticket. Kids in that building paid 30+ bucks for that show.

Yeah, that is always annoying; but to be fair they only have about an hours worth of material off their first two records. I suppose they could sneak in some covers, but that isn't every band's thing.

The key to shows where the band is relatively new and short on material is to have strong supporting acts. The Stokes had barely an hours worth of material off their first two records when I saw them, but they brought The Sounds on tour with them, so that made up for their short set.

I actually didn't mind 45 Grave all that much, but Dinah Cancer was always a horrible vocalist, even worse than X's Exene Cervenka (if that was humanly possible)...at the time she at least had looks going for her, 20+ years later, she's hagged out and half the band is dead. Scary stuff indeed.

Believe me, you can fairly easily stretch a set 45 minutes. Playing for an hour is a copout.

KOL were pretty strong. Their best song was easily "Charmer", which they closed the set list with. That song carries violence the same way that the Pixies' "Bone Machine" does, albeit with less raw emotion.

They played a solid long set, and the Palladium was sold out. Good for them.

They need a better sound guy. The Matchless combos couldnt cut through, and that's a very bad thing. Those amps produce beautiful tones. The SVTs bounced off the walls with no probs though.

My standard for this type of rock is Pixies, who I would say are a 10/10 in their prime in a club or a hall. I would give KOL a 7/10 on that night. With a more proficient sound man, it could have easily been 8/10. In 2-3 years (if they stick together) when the guys are more experienced, tighter, and have a catalogue with more excellent (as opposed to good) live tunes, they could really bring the place down.

It was a very small theatre. I'm guessing maybe 150 people. We didn't come early or stay after, so didn't get to talk to him, but he was in a very friendly and chatty mode, so we probably should have. I've got another video of him just talking, about how he got hooked up with the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago when he was in high school. At some point I'll upload it if you're interested in seeing it. The thing about the youtube deal - maybe I'm doing something wrong - but it took like an hour and a half to upload that two and a half minute video. I was doing other stuff on the computer while it loaded, but had to be stationary so the computer didn't shut itself off.

I wish I could help on tthe You Tube thing, but I've never taken the mess with it, I should I have some cool stuff I could upload.

As for shows: I've gotten to the point over the last few years that I'm not even interested in the big arena shows anymore. It has to be small/mid level intimate settings where the artists/performers are available to the fans or I really see no point in going. Afterall, it's far cheaper to rent a concert DVD than to pay big $$$ and be so far back that you're basically watching the show on the huge screens they put up.

Nada Surf were pretty fun. They present a very positive, infectious production from a simple straight-forward rock power trio. Unfortunately, the PA at Haileys in Denton was crap and cut off at least ten times durning play! Ridiculous. The venue was absolute rubbish. The venue opened at 9 (theoretically), but the nimrods couldnt get the folks through the door until about 10:15...well into the first band's set. Exacerbating the situation was the fact that it was 35 degrees outside and everyone was dressed for a cramped, small venue and a high-energy show. The cherry on the top was the fact that the idiot venue owner (cant remember his name) stood with a blockade of bartenders after the show and helped funnel people out the door while yelling "Get the **** out of my bar!" at people that walked by. Total failure. It will take the Pixies to come through to get me back into that rathole. If you are thinking of playing Denton (which is awesome), play at Rubber Gloves, Dans or some other venue. Haileys is full of schlubs.

On to Nada Surf....

I was really impressed by the way they handled the situation. They worked with the sound crew during the mishaps and really came out of the thing smelling like roses. They could have played their normal tour set, done their thing, got the cash, and got out of their as quick as they could, but instead they played requests during times when the PA would quit, including a multiple-song interlude where guitarist/singer Matthew Caws did some acoustic tunes. They played for over 2 hours all told.

They are tight, fun, and infections. Excellent rock music with catchy pop melodies. Check 'em out if you can...hopefully in a better venue than Haileys.

Great thing about Nada Surf is that after their one real hit on the tail of the grunge era, they went on to make music. They developed a sound and really became something that contributes to the movement of rock music.

Theyre nice guys, and are really focused on making sure that you leave their show having gotten your dollars worth. Very respectable.

Premiere: NASA [ft. Tom Waits and Kool Keith]: "Spacious Thoughts" [Stream]

Kool Keith and Tom Waits, together at last. The pairing between the rapper and the brawler/bawler/bastard doesn't sound much more natural than you'd expect on "Spacious Thoughts", the first track from the forthcoming debut album by Squeak E. Clean (aka director Spike Jonze's brother Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (aka Ze Gonzales) as NASA. But it's an intriguing experiment nonetheless. Kool Keith shares some colorful reminiscences about the stars-- "I was up there watchin' James Brown's pockets/ Stuffed with Jolly Ranchers/ When the NFL had the Rams in Los Angeles"-- over a haunted, horn-bolstered psych-funk groove. Waits' ragged howl interjects in between Keith verses, carrying in its gale some archetypally Waitsian stuff like, you know, strangling a monkey with a clock, boarding a night train, or how "they say the moon, it smells just like a cherry bomb." It's well worth a listen even if just to hear Waits utter the words "ghetto booty."

LABF. Who's that? I've always liked that Kinks' song, Lazing on a sunny afternoon. ;D

That's my friend and mentor Carl Verheyen.

Carl is a first-call, A-list L.A. studio player who has played on about a gazillion records, movies, and TV shows over the past 25 years or so.

Chances are you've heard him many times and don't even know it.

Carl has also has also recorded several CDs with his own group:

http://www.carlverheyen.com/

His first record is sort of fusion-oriented (Allan Holdsworth guests on one track.)

"Garage Sale" is the one that best showcases the incredibly wide range of styles Carl can play, IMO.

Subsequent records are more blues and vintage rock oriented.

Carl is easily the most versatile guitar player I've ever met insofar as he can play any style - whether rock, blues, jazz, country, nylon string classical, or whatever - and play it really well.

His intervallic approach to single note improv is really innovative and original too. 8')

Pavement - Brighten the Corners (Nicene Creedence Edition)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61W-2NFHSXL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

Man I miss Pavement......Malk's solo career doesn't come close to even the worst stuff put out by his original band IMHO. He's been a total let down from the moment the band broke up.

Brighten is great stuff, but I still think Crooked was the high point. Be that as it may there's really not a Pavement disc out there that's not worth owning....strange that there's not been a compilation issued on the back catalog yet (or one that I'm aware of anyways)

Looking to get a yardbird record Not cd... What is recomended?

A Yardbirds record and not a cd eh? What a weird request....I'll take a stab at it though.

Your best bet would be a CD actually and that would be Ultimate which is on Rhino. This collection serves two purposes:

1) It (like all Rhino compilations) tends to go overboard on it's selection of material, which in this case is an advantage for you. IMHO, It contains the best cross section of each era of the band (but be advised Beck comes out the winner here materialwise, so if you're a slave to Page or Clapton...you might feel they're underrepresented)....and
2) Because it's on Rhino, it'd be a minor miracle if it ever goes out of print. So the title should be still available thru Rhino's website.

Now, if you're really serious about the vinyl releases, then you need to seek out some of the original mid-60's stuff (because it's doubtful an all inclusive anthology is available in that format). I'd go with Over Under Sideways Down...but again, if you're a Page or Clapton addict, you'll be disappointed (since that's a Beck disc). If Page-era is what you're after, you will need to search out Live Yardbirds Featuring Jimmy Page which will give you all you need in the pre-Zep Page Dept. and more. If Clapton is what you're after, then Five Live Yardbirds will fit the bill nicely.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I listened to the five live birds and liked it! Very interested in Over Under Sideways Down. Have to get it.

I also listened to Little Games. Found some Similarity between "White Summer" and "Over the Hills and Far Away". Nothing major. Thought it was cool.

http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?r=1&popup=0&EAN=14381514520&ourl=DVD

Okay, got this for Xmas but because of the Diego trip, I couldn't get to it sooner than today. It's about what I expected, which is to say that it's great. They haven't played for a year, so they are very loose (which I kinda like myself) It takes a bit for Moon to get up to speed at the beginning, but when he does, he's his typical self. Townsend is beyond manic in trying to prove he's not the boring old fart the punks of the time accused him of being. Daltry was at his zenith as a vocalist and the film made the loss of Entwistle hurt that much more....what a talent, what a Man, what a tragedy his passing was :( .

The high point for me was Dreaming From The Waist..which is grossly underrated as a song. It's good to finally have some footage of it in it's totality. Pete was pretty entertaining at this point, slapping the drink at and pushing the amp over on the stagehand, threatening the crowd to come up and try taking the guitar off him and such....big bad Pete Ha!

Overall, a great DVD. The 69 show is great footage as well, but the years in the vault took it's toll on it. I've seen much better footage of that show in The Kids Are Alright...I understand the age of it and all but damn that was pretty beat. I'd rank Live At Kilburn 1977 right behind that film and IMHO the greatest footage of The Who of them all Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970.

Woodstock's Greatest Performance.

Agreed. I think in retrospect, IMHO the performances at Woodstock were on the whole not that great. The best of which belong to Santana, Sly & The Family Stone, The Who & (maybe) The Jefferson Airplane ("Volunteers" smoked in the original film, it was replaced by a subpar song and performance in the reissue). Hendrix's set was just aimless jamming with a pick up outfit (still good but far from his jaw-dropping best) Joplin was subpar and the rest were pretty much forgettable or just plain outright embarrassing (like Sha Na Na).

I thought Joplin was great at Woodstock. Hendrix, too. Obviously it wasn't the same as his Monterrey Pop Festival set, which I think is his best, bust still a very good set.

I've seen much better footage from both. The Hendrix set @ Woodstock is about the bottom of his barrel....meaning that while it's still good, it's hard to think of any other Hendrix footage it's better than. Certainly it doesn't come close to Monterrey or the New Years Eve/Day shows that Band Of Gypsys came from. I suppose a case could be made that it's better than his Isle of Wight set, but even on that, it's debatable (even though Hendrix was sickly and not having a good night, the overall trio was much tighter). This was essentially Hendrix jamming with an ad hoc band assembled just a couple of weeks beforehand so naturally they weren't up to speed or anywhere near tight by the time of the show.

I was talking about the whole Woodstock thing to someone this afternoon and they brought up the Ten Years After clip as a highlight....I'd have to disagree with that as well as the tune is sunk by the overlong middle portion of it when Lee seems to be just doing some scat vocals over the beat. It hasn't aged very well IMHO.

Just my thoughts on it all anyways.

As far as guitar playing goes, Alvin Lee mopped the floor with Hendrix, Santana, et al, at Woodstock, IMO.

I've never seen TYA's entire set from Woodstock, but based on "Going Home" and the three minutes or so out of the 10 that Lee actually plays guitar on it, you may be right. Too bad that's just at the beginning and end of the track though, what's inbetween is an ultra long snore that dulls the track's impact and edge. I go home-a, skeebopawow, Whhhhaaaaaoooowwww, do the stomp.

I really like that as well. I perfer The Lost Paris Tapes to American Prayer also...the posthumous backing music didn't really jive with the poetry IMHO.
I actually perfer Morrison reading his stuff without it.

As do I. Even "Texas Radio and the Big Beat" sounds majestic when Morrison reads it without music.

Whats amazing about the guitar player in this clip is what happened to him. Pat Martino had a brain anuerism and lost all memory. Total amnesia!!!!! Could not remember he played guitar. With help of his old recording and friends he re-learned how to play.

Pretty sure he was playing with Joey Defransesco the last time I saw him when he opened for Steely Dan but I'm not sure.

Pretty cool clip

All of you indie children should check these guys out, who clearly are a sort of transition fossil between Sonic Youth and bands like Interpol.

I have apparently agreed to go see The Tubes. My buddy is nuts about '80's music and loves stuff like this and, say, Kraftwerk.

How bad is this going to be?

I'm watching a debate elsewhere about who would be a decent replacement singer for Robert Plant, since Page seems to want to tour and Plant doesn't. One guy is pulling for Terry Reid. Another guy thinks Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge would be good. I kind of like Chris Robinson for the job.

What do you'all think?

There is no replacement.

Without Plant, it isnt Led Zeppelin. Period. Same goes for Page, JPJ and Bonham.

They should name it something else and do original tunes.

Yeah. I'm aware of what should be. I saw them on the 1973, 1975, and 1977 tours and won't be going to see them in their dottage no matter who they hire.

Anyway, does anyone have an opinion about who might be the best replacement, assuming Plant sticks to his guns?

Ah...Im jealous. i never saw them live.

Page should hook up with a unique singer/songwriter type. Maybe someone like Chris Robinson or even Steven Tyler would be cool, but I wouldnt call it Zep.

I would buy tickets in a heartbeak if Page joined The Strokes, Kings of Leon, or North Mississippi Allstars for an album of new original tunes. That would be outstanding.

Well, only half the band is left, but they put on a good to great show. The material is somewhat eccentric and not for everyone. Even if you don't care for it, it's worth going just to see Prarie Prince..unquestionably the most underrated drummer of the last 30 years.

Kraftwerk demands a lot from the listener...I always liked electronic music that wasn't geared for the dance clubs. Unfortunately, a lot of that stuff is lost on people on this side of the Atlantic. I've freaked a few people out with Autoban in my time....the ones left standing were subjected to Magma and Synergy, that usually took care of the rest Ha!

The Strokes have a sharp, metered-out, clean type of late 60's-meets-matchless kind of guitar tones. Page would slice right through with his technique. He makes anything he does interesting. I think that he would be awesome with The Strokes. He would light those songs on fire.

I dunno about that, the pairing just doesn't make very much sense to me....it would be interesting to see what would result from it though, I'll give you that much. I've seen weird pairings before work out surprisingly well (like Sonny Rollins & Leonard Cohen) and this would definitely rank right up there amongst the strangest.

What's next? Robert Plant cutting an album with The Hives backing him up? :spit:

Page is always relevant. He is truly a brilliant player. He could find a niche anywhere, with anyone. I am confident that anyone that would add him to their songwriting process would end up much the better. Not to mention the performance aspect, where Page is a master. He is one of those guys who transcends era.

Boy, I dunno about that.

That wasn't exactly the case when he joined forces with Dave Coverdale or the Black Crowes, but then again, I've never been all that awed by Page in the first place, so the reverence for him escapes me. The Crowes set was at least listenable, which is more than I can say for the Page/Coverdale or Page/Plant recordings. I won't even elaborate on the disaster that was The Firm. Given all that, I'd say his batting average just isn't all that high post-Zep. IOW, what you say might have been true circa 1970 something...but the evidence is showing something very different since then.

Yep.

Even more amazing to me is that Martino not only re-learned how to play - he was able to return to the same level of playing as before the aneurysm.

I attended a clinic he gave at G.I.T. not too long after his return to music. The aneurysm definitely didn't diminish his overall intellectual capacity - you practically need a degree in advanced math to understand some of the theoretical systems he has created.

I actually thought his record with Coverdale was outstanding. Although it could of easily been mistaken for Zeppelin material i loved it.
