Just booked my post-tax season Denver trip. A Rockies game will be happening. And a Nuggies playoff game.

But color me stoked for the baseball season. Rox should be good, and Coors Field is just plain fun.

Nice win for the Tigers today over previously unbeaten Baltimore 7-3.

Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, and Alex Avila all went yard.

Justin Verlander went 8 strong innings with 9 Ks.

I think Justin Verlander is going to have a monster year.

Miguel Cabrera already has 3 HRs this year (250th career HR tonight)....say what you want about him, but that drunk can rake with the best of them.

Joaquin Benoit was a great addition to the bullpen and will be a great setup man for Jose Valverde.

Manny Ramirez is retiring as a player, Major League Baseball announced in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

The statement said Ramirez had "an issue" under MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and informed the league he is hanging it up rather than "continue with the process under the program."

Did Clint Hurdle pull a fast one on Tracy?

As Tabata dug in for the at-bat, the Pirates' on-deck circle was inhabited by Andrew McCutchen(notes), giving off the appearance that the star center fielder was due up next. The Pirates' next batter, though, would have been relief pitcher Garrett Olson(notes) since Hurdle had pulled a double-switch earlier and Pittsburgh's bench was now empty.

But instead of walking Tabata to face Olson he of six career at-bats and one career hit Tracy elected to pitch to Tabata. That, of course, turned out to be a big mistake.

But was McCutchen's deceptive presence orchestrated by Hurdle? And did it play a part in Tracy's decision to stay away from having Franklin Morales(notes) issue an intentional walk?

Hurdle who used to manage the Rockies and was replaced by Tracy weakly denied the first bit with a knowing smirk.

Angels update: Dan Haren 3-0 after coming into the 14 inning in Saturday's win vs. The Blue Jays. 2 starts and one relief appearance for a 1,2,3 14th inning. Not a bad start. Weaver wins again striking out 15 for the Halos. Kazmir goes on the DL with an imaginary injury (the case of the sucks). Whoever wanted Kazmir for our playoff run in 09 instead of Halladay should be banned from watching baseball. Vernon Wells is the new Gary Mathews Jr. for the team now as he is batting around .100 for the season.

Only thing I'm wondering...is Toddley going to get the majority of playing time at first this year? His power seems to be better than it was last year already, but I'm wondering how things are going to play out with wiggington. I thought they brought him in to eventually take over at 1b, but I'm not sure. It seems like he's had better success over at third, but stewart (once he's totally healthy) is my main choice over there.

How good is our second base???? Holy ****, herrera is just an incredible hitter, and lopez is pretty solid. Not to mention E.Y.jr is in the wings when we need that speed.

Kaylore, I completely agree, we definitely have one of the deepest teams in the league right now...AND it looks like we completely turned around our road woes.

I have absolutely ZERO faith in Stewart. He shows flashes, but consistency is the name of the game in baseball and he has none. I agree with Herrera and Lopez though, they both look solid. Even Morales (the catcher) looks legit. I just hope the rotation can hold up.

You're absolutely right, consistency is king. streaks are also part of it, and I'd just love to see his power start coming through if he can stay healthy. I don't know a WHOLE lot about wiggington...but from what I've heard he's got some decent power as well. I guess I'm more comfortable with Stewart overall. I guess we just have to trust the skipper, cause after all, Jim Tracy is our homeboy :)

And ps, a big **** YOU to Comcast. I couldn't watch either of the double header games today...and RIGHT when they started going through the Rockies highlights on sportscenter, the damn emergency alert test comes on and stays on until they switched segments. Fml

Its true. The Mets and Pit are't that great but these were the types of road teams we needed to face to get the "we can't win on the road" monkey off our backs. They leverage this positive mojo into the season. At least the Rockies are winning to open a season a for a change and not playing catch-up after bombing April and May like they usually do.

From what I've read, by moving from Tuscon to Phoenix, the Rockies reduced the amount of time needed to travel by bus (2 - 2.5 hours to about 15-30 mins). This meant that they faced better pitching and hitting. In the past many teams wouldn't send their veteran players on a 2 hour bus ride to Tuscon, and the Rockies wouldn't send their veterans to Phoenix.

April is an easy month for the Rockies, but it is encouraging to see them win games on the road they would have lost last year. Games where they fall behind, they don't panic. Games where it is close in the ninth, Street shuts them down, and when he has been shaky (only once once this year) the Rockies hold on.

The Mets played some pretty awful ball, but good teams like the Rockies punish mistakes (Herrera's 3 run HR after Mets bobble a DP ball that would have gotten them our of the inning).

We need to hear from Champ on this one. WHo couldnt see the fraud of McCourt buying this team when he borrowed to the hilt with his business adventures back East? I would love to see a cartoon of the McCourts fighting over that they own the Dodgers and then show today both fighting that the other owns the Dodgers. There season ticket base has dropped from 30k to 16k in just a few years. I guess the gangsta lifestyle of Dodgers' fans didnt work out. Scare off the season ticket holders, have no star players and cater to the shaven head, neck tattoo crowd.

24champ
04-21-2011, 12:44 AM
It's sad, I feel sorry for Vin Scully having to go through this in his last years with the team. I know I am sick of this bull**** soap opera. This has been going on for a year and a half. So it's not over by a long shot, but Selig (who wanted McCourt to own the Dodgers in the first place) has taken the first step in the right direction. There's a lot of uncertainty in the short term, I am not sure if there will be a firesale or not to meet payroll. That would definitely suck, but the Dodgers are not going anywhere.

Some other tidbits for those interested in this fiasco...

IRS agents are interested in the fact that the McCourts took $145 million from the team and paid no taxes (certain court documents place the figure at around $105 million, but were told its actually $145 mil).

The IRS is also interested in the fact that the McCourt children have drawn a salary from the team but performed no apparent services to justify the payout.

http://benmaller.com/2011/04/report-irs-going-after-dodgers-owner/

Hope McCourt gets tossed in jail for tax evasion and embezzlement.

The world took notice of the problems this spring when a San Francisco Giants fan was badly beaten in the parking lot after the opening-day game. Baseball officials added that incident to their long list of grievances against McCourt, which became complete when he recently needed to borrow $30 million from Fox to meet payroll.

That money went directly into McCourt's personal account instead of the Dodgers account, meaning it was not subject to Selig's approval, at which point the commissioner finally threw up his hands and told McCourt to start packing.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke-dodgers-20110421,0,7011209.column?page=2

On April 5, Frank McCourt presented Selig with a proposal from Fox for a 20-year television contract worth at least $3 billion, a deal McCourt said could provide funding to settle his divorce, manage the Dodgers' stiff debts and improve the team.

Selig has neither approved nor rejected the proposal. Since court papers revealed the McCourts had redirected more than $100 million from Dodgers revenues for personal expenses, Selig was loath to approve any deal in which significant revenue would not go into the team, according to numerous baseball officials.

It's sad, I feel sorry for Vin Scully having to go through this in his last years with the team.

Truly one of the great men is sports. Between him, Chick and Jim Murray with the LA Times...it is the end of a golden era of great sports communicators in Los Angeles.

Gotta wonder if owners in all sports are watching this closely. I'm certain one of the reasons NFL teams don't want to open their books (and I don't think they should have to) is the money possibly going to family members who, like the McCourt kids, are drawing a salary without defined responsibilities.

Who, in your opinion would be involved in a fire sale? Looking at their roster I don't see many position players worth dealing for. As usual the Dahyers are fielding a team of mostly over-paid crap. Outside of Kemp, and Eithier there is nothing. I guess some would include Loney, but how hard is it to find a slap-hitting first baseman? They could find plenty takers for some of their pitching though.

My guess would be Furcal, Lilly, Broxton, Kemp, Ethier, Kuroda. Those are the top earners on the club. Furcal's injured so probably can rule him out for now. You can see list of salaries here...

http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/salaries/_/name/lad/los-angeles-dodgers

Still, a firesale is unlikely but I don't know how much more MLB will uncover in their investigation of how the teams finances were handled by Frank McCourt. It already looks pretty bad, IRS is all over this and I suspect we will find out more in the near future.

Also Mark Cuban speaks...

And what of Cuban, the name most often brought up when an MLB franchise goes up for sale or even threatens to go up for sale? Asked by MSNBC's Darren Rovell about his potential interest in the Dodgers, Cuban said: "I won't participate in a bidding scenario, but I'm happy to take a look if the team is for sale."

http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/columns/story?id=6403559

So he is interested to a degree. We'll see, I just want this mess cleaned up and over with.

Tulo and Cargo will start it up soon, toddley is hitting the ball WAY better than all of last year already, ianetta's got a better looking stroke...we WILL hit the ball. And the best part is, we aren't playing catch up right now like we have in years past. Our defense is carrying us , and pretty soon we'll be firing on all cylinders.

Its kind of exciting here right now. Hosmer has really sparked some interest, and then they went and took two of three from the Yankees at Yankee Stadium (first time since 1998 - if memory serves). So yeah, a lot of excitement here right now.

The last two games were ugly, though. They ran up against the buzzsaw Verlander and just couldn't hit for crap yesterday. It's Davies-Scherzer today, so a sweep is definitely in the cards here.

Pitching is the real problem. Hopefully, either Danny Duffy or Mike Montgomery can come up this year and contribute a decent second half. They might even be able to stay in contention if that happens, but right now the pitching just can't hang.

I'm guessing they are still trying to limit his innings, like they did the previous 2 years.

He only pitched one year in the minor leagues (2008) and has been pitching for the Tigers since 2009.

He is still only 22 years old.

That said, I would have let the kid go for the complete game. He missed his last start due to rain and they actually let him throw 120 pitches back on May 5th.

I like Grandy, but he needs to stop trying to be a power hitter and go back to his 20-20-20-20 days IMO.

Placido Polanco is having another nice year for the Phillies.

Batting .323 with 3 HRs, 27 RBIs, and 25 runs scored and has a solid glove.

The Tigers made a big mistake not keeping him around two years ago.

I would have kept him around at 2B....if money was an issue, I would have moved him to 3B and given him what they gave Brandon Inge, who I like in the field and as a leader, but is batting .204 this year and is a career .236 hitter.

Texas Rangers draft paralyzed Georgia player

The Texas Rangers drafted University of Georgia outfielder Johnathan Taylor on Wednesday in the 33rd round of baseball's amateur draft. The Houston Astros took Buddy Lamothe, a pitcher out San Jacinto College, in the 40th round.

Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary until you know this: Taylor, a junior from Acworth, Ga., was partially paralyzed this spring when he suffered a broken neck in an outfield collision with teammate Zach Cone. Lamothe was paralyzed in a diving accident last month.

The Rangers had selected Cone in the second round of the draft.

Cone and Taylor are friends, but their collision March 6 in a game against Florida State left Taylor paralyzed. According to The Dallas Morning News, he is unlikely to walk again and is considered a tetraplegic, because the paralysis affected all his extremities.

He is being treated at Atlanta's Shepherd Center, the newspaper reported.

Meantime, Rangers director of amateur scouting Kip Fagg told ESPNDallas.com that his team was trying to do something nice, though had Taylor not been injured he likely had the talent to play professionally: "He's a great kid, and he's going through a terrible time in his life and we thought this would be something to uplift him. I've seen the kid play since high school, he was a great player at Georgia."

Taylor's college coach, David Perno, echoed what Fagg said, according to ESPN.com: "J.T. is definitely a player worthy of getting drafted. He's been a big part of our program, and we are all very excited for him. When I talked to him after he got the call, he was in the middle of his rehabilitation work, laughing and having a good time and was thrilled to be drafted."

He prefaced that comment to the website by saying, "This was truly a classy move and a great gesture on the part of the Texas Rangers organization."

Worm, great story and didnt hear about it when it first happened. I was also sad that the 13 year old boy in Florida who died while trying to bunt. Not sure if he was squared around with one foot in front of the other or little league style where your whole front (and chest) is facing the pitcher. That is a recipe for disaster. Next season, I am getting my sons some type of chest protector that will help a tad while not being too bulky. As for Taylor, at least he wasnt drafted by the Royals or Pirates as he might have thought he would be put in their lineup within a year. Too much pressure.

The royals have been been paying big bucks to sign players lately in the draft. From what I understand way over slot, they have also spent a ton of money in the latin market. They have pitcher Agulles that is Latin that is supposed to be a beast. One of the pitchers John Lamb is hurt and will have Tommy John, but the Royals look to have a 5 year run where they will have 5 all stars with Hosmer being a left handed Albert Pujols with more power and speed.

Yup, you were COMPLETELY spot on with Stewart from the beginning. As far as the speed goes...dex always looked quick in the outfield ( which I personally think was due to GREAT instincts and reads), but to me was a very overrated base runner. He looked fairly slow, got caught 5 or 6 times this year already...maybe that was due to bad jumps, but it appears to me anyway that blackmon has quicker overall speed. Anytime a guy steals second on a pic at 1, you've got somethin special!

I sat down with Byrdman to take in a nice relaxing Royals game, but it turned into a fiasco. It always does this time of year. The heat gets hot and the Royals fall apart. Hochaver is not a #1. This is a fact that has been pounded in our heads. In economic terms he is a sunk cost. Byrdman pointed out the fact that they should just plan on him going 5 innings. My feelings is every pitcher should be expected to go 7 and you don't plan on anyone only going 5, but he does make a point. It's like when I get in my Lancer with 1 gallon of gas and expect to make it to platte city, sometimes it makes it sometimes it doesn't, but everytime I pull that ****. It isn't smart.

You said exactly the same thing with the Phils last year. Shockingly, they didn't make it to the WS.

It would be a pretty boring sports world if only those front-running teams pimped by the local Philadelphia news sources won.
