I kinda want to keep this to newer generation consoles, e.g. Xbox/PS1/2/3 because we all know some of those NES games were insane and **** (A la, TMNT)

I just loaded Demon's Souls back up again for the first time in a year, and god damn, I'm getting pounded like a china buffet next to Jamarcus Russell's house.

I'll have to think on this thread and get back to it, but Dogg you hit the freaking nail on the head with your TMNT comment. Game is ridiculous. Not was. IS.

I had the game as a kid and could never beat it. Well when I had a Wii they put it up for download. I figured that I'm 25 now, the game was probably just hard because I was a kid. **** no. Game is still brutal. Played it a few times before giving up.

Took awhile, but it sticks with you, we do it every now and then for some pre-game drinking or what not, bet I could do it 10 percent of the time I tried nowadays. Was it worth a summer of my life? Absolutely. I'm very much closer to alpha male then before that summer.

I thought that Half-life 2 on the original Xbox was pretty damn tough. One of the best fps' ever made for that system...The first time I played the Ravenholm level, was at night in a basement with all the lights off. Just about **** my pants. That whole game was an incredible experience, but there were some parts (on the hardest difficulty setting) that were FRUSTRATING. Like the damn prison barrage, and that whole sniping section on Hwy 17.

Fantastic game though. it's hard, because since the newer consoles came out, I definitely haven't gotten to anything REALLY challenging like I did back in the old school days. Maybe a couple of puzzle spots on the prince of persia or god of war series, but nothing too crazy

You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

I should probably qualify that. I did not get to play my PS1 for hours at a time growing up. Only got a few hours during the day before chores kicked in. That particular summer I spent half of it in CT with my grandparents. I wasnt allowed to bring video game systems...but I had to go to Mass every damn week. No justice...anyways...I also started over a dozen times. That's what made it hard. I didnt really get into the game until 3/4 of the way through it which took forever to get to.

Out of modern games, I agree. There are no supremely hard single player games. Part of the design to make gaming more accessible to a wider audience. I've played and beat Dragon Age II. Took me about 3 days. I'm on my third playthrough now and found the unlimited XP glitch. Cake.

Never got through the 25 man because our guild could never muster enough to finish the progression. Not until they started adding buffs, and when it got to 30%, I figured the achievement was worthless at that point and stopped trying. I dunno, I would be interested to see the number of groups that were able to down LK on a 30% buff per attempt vs. the number of groups that were able to down Gruul per attempt. It seemed to me like after the buff hit 30%, everyone and their brother was walking around with the Kingslayer title, which is why I chose never to go for it. It was like getting Undying after 4.0.

Now on heroic is a different story, you didn't mention that in your first post.

As far as hard games go, anyone ever played Track & Field 2 for NES? That was pretty difficult without having one of those controllers that you could have automatically press the button a thousand times. Also I'm surprised no one mentioned Mega Man 1.

Okay, I think I find why you're making such a laughable claim...

You realize I said "heroic" and not "regular" mode, right?

The amount of people that killed the heroic 25m encounter was ridiculously small and a massive portion of PVE guilds broke up over it.

Old School would be ghosts n goblins and battletoads. The end boss in E.V.O is a bitch too.

I have to change my answer for hardest modern game. The hardest modern games are any online multiplayer game. There is just always someone much better than you. Bad Company 2 is also pretty difficult to get good at, so that may be my pick. The hardest of all time has to be counter strike. In its prime, it had so many people putting in so many hours. I was pretty good at that game and it was not hard to find people that could just make me look horrible.

Yeah when I think of hard online games I think of Counter-Strike too. Not just people being able to shoot you in the face in half a second, but all the other little elements like knowing maps, weapons, certain sounds, how the grenades operate etc.

CS had weapons where you could be effective with very little experience like the SMGs. It took a bit of time to master the more hardcore weapons like the M4A1 (tough), AK (hardish), AWP Magnum (hard), Desert Eagle (****ing omg).

Once you got it they were deadly.

Those game back then were very challenging. Get past the first 2 or 3 levels and they required some serious skills to keep your game alive.

Defender was that way also. Could never get past the 7th level on that game. 3 Aliens hijacking your peeps at once and throw in a few saucers to deal with, yeah, it gets rough.

Missile Command was the same way.

There's another side scroller that I dumped way too much money into in Jr. High.

Man, I wish there was a true old school 80's arcade out there. There used to be some Nickel arcades around that have a few classics.

But I bet someone could make a good bar concept for the 35-50 crowd with a few dozen classic cabinets, 5-10 Pins, a couple of pool tables and a good selection of beers on tap...Throw some flatscreens around the room looping early 80's MTV & classic cartoons...Dress the cocktail waitresses in Warrant Cherry Pie type outfits and Boom....4) Profit.

Place would probably be overrun with hipsters in no time though.

The only really tough things in any COD game ever was Pavlov's house on the hardest difficulty in COD1 and defending the trainyard in the last mission in COD:United offensive on hardest difficulty. Anything after they put in health regen hasn't been as hard.

Some of the pitfall areas make it VERY frustrating, but once you get the hang of the different radio frequencies and everything else, it's just a fantastic game outside of the horrid Japanese translations ie "The Truck Have Started To Move"

The end to that is awesome. You basically have to hide behind a pillar from Big Boss and just light him up with remote control rockets until he dies.

Metal Gear was badass. The only problem I had with it was the part in the jungle on your way to building 5 I think where you had to go through the maze. I don't remember there ever being any clues you could pick up along the way that directed you how to get through it, so the only way was to look it up in Nintendo Power. Same thing with the pipe maze in Super Mario Bros. Unless I'm missing something, they just relied on you to spend hours and hours on trial and error, or money kids like me didn't have on their magazine.

It's too bad that the sequel to Metal Gear was so terrible, but I've heard they've more than redeemed themselves with the nextgen console sequels. I haven't played any of them yet, but I've heard they're fantastic.

It was only a few possibilities through like 3-4 sequences. Hardly takes hours to trial and error through that.

I dunno.

They're 6/13 HM 25 man now, so it must be MORE difficult on the whole, but I have a very hard time believing Blizzard will top the 25m heroic Arthas encounter. That took months and months of pulls to get down.

Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja difficulty is the hardest game i know of that does not use "cheap" difficulty (stuff like no saving, or one hit death [Hardcore Contra games]).

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OwGpUF5pC9E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The actual hardest game ever made if you want to make everything fair game (one hit kills, very little save points, etc.) is I wanna be the Guy. I don't know if anyone in the world has been able to beat it without dieing, no matter how many times its been tried by the most dedicated people. Following clip is the best run on youtube.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CPBgxWyXYKI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Of these two games I would highly recommend Ninja Gaiden (the first 1, not the Second) on either the Xbox or PS3. As for I wanna be the guy, if you want to know what is by far the hardest game ever made, and don't get frustrated too easily, I recommend you take a look at it.

Advice, don't take dieing too personally, if you didn't die within 10 seconds of starting the game, you are already incredible.

Yeah, that "I wanna be the guy" level is pretty representative of the original game, except I wanna be the guy does not have nearly as precise controls as super meat boy, and the platforming levels are even tighter and more brutal.
