what do you think of this statement:
Chris Mortensen
Just remember, only QB in 30 years or so without pre-draft detractors, can't-miss franchise guy was John Elway in 1983.

just saw it on twitter, funny that anyone in draft was ever like this given how they blow up the smallest things about players pre draft now.

I remember him being the "for sure" #1 pick from the end of the 1982 season to the draft. It was a given, no debate. I don't remember anyone having a bad thing to say about him but then again I wanted him so badly for the Broncos I might have had a deaf ear.

I am not "Old" like Gunns, but I remember that there was never a doubt that John was going to be the number 1 pick, It was just a matter of who he was going to play for...NFL or the Yankee's.

I'll bet in this day and age of over scouting and media frenzy there would be detractors.

By the way, you know what REALLY pisses me off about this?

ESPN made a top 25 college players all time list a few years ago and had Elway at FIFTEEN.

Get ready to get really mad:

Vince Young was #10

Elway would of won a national championship and the Heisman if he had Hillis in the backfield.

Looks to run too quickly, needs to stay in the pocket and go through his reads.

Another odd tidbit was that Dan Marino went #1 overall that year in the USFL draft. #27 in the NFL draft

No way would Elway have played for Kush.

His OPS as a Yankee farmhand was nearly .900 (small sample size)

Elway was the clear #1 pick that year. The Broncos were not mentioned as a possible destination until the deal happened. The Raiders made a strong push for Elway and to this day Al Davis still things Pete Rozelle sabotoged that deal.

Always though Marino should have been the 2nd QB picked that year. Had such great touch, and threw a beautiful long ball.

I thought the issue with Marino when he was coming out was off the field. He was considered too much of a partier or something like that.

I remember my buddy and I were in 7th grade PE class. I think we were learning how to wrestle. By the way, there aren't many things worse in life than your gym teacher putting you in a headlock and rolling you to the mat. :)

Anyway, I vividly recall us complaining the Broncos had drafted an offensive lineman with their first pick. I don't remember who thought they should have taken, but we certainly thought it was going to be a boring draft.

If my memory serves me well I think that Elway was the number 1 pick in 83 draft because Herschel Walker opted to go to the USFL NJ Generals. Any other old geezers without Alzheimers care to confirm this?

I'd agree with that. VY was an incredible college player who led his team to a national championship in one of the most clutch games ever played. I find it hard to argue with...

I'd expect Tebow to be #1 on that list now...

You're right about Walker signing with the USFL Generals but I don't think he would've been the #1 pick,. Baltimore (the Colts) had the 1st pick and they needed a QB desperately. Irsay the owner said he would pick Elway 1st. Elway said via the press "If Baltimore drafts me I'll play baseball". The rest is history.
