View Full Version : Quake Shifted Earth's Axis, Moved Japan Shoreline 8 feet

That was one big quake.

(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

That's freaking crazy.

Its weird to see a major geological event like that play out live.

What's even crazier is that this one was very small in the grand scheme of the major changes that have happened to the earth over geological time.

A quake that moves the shore 20 feet would surely destroy all life on the island.

God be with the Japanese.

My cousin has done the JET program teaching ESL in various areas in Japan over the past several years and I just got word today that he is safe, but a lot of things near him are absolutely destroyed. It's like the whole country has stopped he said (absence of trains, other rail travel) and it's all very weird. I can't even imagine. I've seen a twister before, but WOW.

Watching massive debris flood through the city was just shocking to see.

It just doesnt seem real.

The level of devastation that is happening over there is going to be unbelievable after it all plays out. It will be greater than Katrina.

Moving the entire land mass 8 feet...how does every building in the country not collapse? Skyscrapers? How do they not topple over with something like this?

When the smoke clears, the global economy is going to take a very nasty jolt from this as well.

I can't stop thinking about all those Japanese with no food and water. Thousands dead everywhere and a nuclear power plant maybe melting down. I know were poor right now, and a lot of people don't want to see us help out other countries with money, but we are going to have to step up here with a ton of aid for Japan. I'm looking for Obama to lead the way for the whole world on this one. I want to see him fire people up to help Japan.

Obviously they have some good building codes. Still though hard to defend against a wall of water.

If Obama thought aid was important, he'd already have said something... as far as I know, he's said very little about the earthquake.

I tell you what, below is a video of President Obama's lack of response to the tsunami...since reading seems beyond you.

I get you don't like Obama, but you are wrong that he is not responding. His physically showing up in Japan accomplishes nothing and is an irresponsible use of government funds given the US Government doesnt' have a budget right now and is still workiing under a continuing resolution.

Using our military personnel to assist, particularly the ones already in Japan is a responsible use of our resources, not making hand shaking visits just to make some poser on a bulletin board happy, who would actually, if he did make the visit simply accuse him of government waste and making a campaign visit like you did with the Tucson stuff too.

So, I respectfully request you STFU about the lack of response from Obama because you clearly have your own agenda in making ignorant statements like that, and it is one that does not belong in either of the threads about the tragedy in Japan.

Yes I could have, but really as the person who started the drama in the first place do you have any place calling me out? Really?

But enough of this bickering, as you said, let's let the faux drama go and focus on the real drama in Japan, setting political agendas aside.

People control what they say. Just because someone presents an opinion that you dont agree with shouldnt leave you emotionally impaired enough that you cant control what you say. There is such a thing as respectful disagreement, especially when what is said is said in jest. One thing that characterizes modern liberalism is that there is collective intolerance for dissenting opinion. You yourself could help to rectify that.

We can leave it there and get back at the friendly jabbing, the light-hearted disagreement. Its much better for the health of the nation than the overly dramatic emotionalized politically correct agitation tactic. That's not something to be respected at all.

Does news just keep getting worse? Reading reports on the Japanese economy which obviously aren't good. There's a report about a volacano erruption and more stuff on the nuclear powerplants getting worse. When I first read about it, it was awful, the fall out is just getting worse. Would it be wrong to blame McDaniels this time? I mean if we are going to jest about it, can't we blame him for it? (Epic, your notes are duly taken and will pursue corrective action in my reaction to posts in the future, honestly. I am being sincere here, I realize given the tenor of my recent posts you may not believe me, but I do listen or read in this case, thus the jest above).

I don't think the earthquake is on Josh, but the nuclear reactor meltdowns may be another result of chucking it deep to Lloyd too much. Incidentally, Xanders is now claiming that he wanted even more stringent building codes, but the "powers that be" decided against that. I don't believe him though...because well......he's Xanders.

You don't do a flyover over a foreign country unless invited by that government. And at the time of crisis the last thing any country needs is a very important foreign dignitary visiting.

The US is doing all that it can to aid Japan, to say otherwise is foolish and dramallama like.
