I have to admit at first I called it total BS but I have to admit after looking at the earth lately they be on to something.

Bigger and more Earthquakes
Bigger and more Hurricanes
Bigger winters
hotter summers
Bigger Solar flairs
Volcanoes are becoming more active
flooding is becoming out of control.

Just sayin'

I will go on record and say that 2012 is going to happen. There's nothing, at this point, that we can do to stop it. We're going to cruise along for the next 9 1/2 months and BAM - it's going to be 2012!

gimme a break, most of this chaos is caused because of the instant access we have to news and stories these days via internet, skype, etc.and how long have official true records been kept on earth 200 years-300 maybe out of probably thousands and thousands of years of existance, way to small of a sample to suggest bigger storms, global warming,etc...we will be here 50 years from now complaining about the next end of the world

Solar Flares come in cycles....it is just a coincidence. Earth Quakes and Hurricanes occur all the time, not to this magnitude (today's).

My point being, it is out of your control, not really worth worrying about it until it happens. By then Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck will save like in Armageddon....

You better quit your job and get to digging that bunker. Make sure you cash in your retirement/any savings to fill it with everthing you will need. Don't worry, money wont matter after the world ends.

Three of those would support anthropegenic global warming, although I'd bet you'd find that 'bigger winters' and 'hotter summers' aren't completely supported in fact. There is no doubt a warming trend (that contributes to 'bigger' winters). Hardly end-of-the-world stuff tho.

As for Earthquakes and Volcanoes: It's merely the perception of increase, not an actual increase in activity. Keep in mind todays quakes aren't the largest ever recorded, or even recorded in the last 100 years.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/faq/?categoryID=6&faqID=110
http://bigthink.com/blogs/eruptions?page=2

I'm not sure that flooding is more or less prominent than its ever been . In the U.S. I seem to recall much bigger flooding episodes this decade than we've seen in the last year.

Perception do not facts make.

nonsense. the ancient Mayans didn't predict the world ending in 2012.

University of Florida anthropologist Susan Gillespie says the 2012 phenomenon comes "from media and from other people making use of the Maya past to fulfill agendas that are really their own."

Right they are smart but here is where EVERYONE, EVERYONE!!! makes the mistake.

Their calendar goes in cycles. It does not just strait up end and say the end of the world. It says nothing like that. People added that on there and made it up.

The mayan calendre actually just shows that we are ending the 5th cycle. (apparantly the worst cycle) and a new one will begin. Their calendar has ended several times before and it cycles again and again.

The world will not end in 2012- it has nothing to do with the mayans or anything else.

And yes, the 2nd poster is right. 2012 is going to happen. Just like he said, in about another 9.5 months, bam it will be 2012--approx 11:59.59 seconds on December 31st.

The Great Pyramid of Cholula (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_did_the_great_pyramid_get_built), the world's largest monument and largest Pre-Columbian pyramid by volume, is a huge complex located in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico.

Only a fraction of a staircase on one side of the Great Pyramid of Cholula has been restored.

The temple-pyramid complex was built over many dozens of generations, from the 2nd century BC to the early 16th century, and was dedicated to the deity Quetzalcoatl. It has a base of 450 by 450 m (1476x1476 ft) and a height of 66 m (217 ft). According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is in fact the largest pyramid as well as the largest monument ever constructed anywhere in the world, with a total volume estimated at 4.45 million m³, almost one third larger than that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. (The Giza pyramid is taller, however.) The Aztecs believed that Xelhua built the Great Pyramid of Cholula.

Yes, really.

I take it you're not aware that Cholula was built by Teotihuacαn people and then the Olmecs later?

1. The great pyramid of Giza was finished around 2600 BC... this didn't even START until 200 BC and wasn't "finished" until 1500

2. It's practically ****ing flat. The design isn't NEARLY as complex as the Great Pyramid of Giza, nor does it contain the astro-symbolism (aligned PERFECTLY to true north, exact representation of Orion's belt, etc)

I think Yellowstone is going to erupt sometime soon, it has swelled the ground more than 10" this year so far - the most researchers have seen yet. I believe it is just about 60-70k years overdue for it's eruption. Scientists predict the eruption will completely wipe the planet of human civilization.

In January 2010, the USGS stated "that uplift of the Yellowstone Caldera has slowed significantly" and uplift continues but at a slower pace.

The three super eruptions occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago.

At that pattern, we're not overdue... we've got a good 200,000 years left :)

And PS. No one is doubting the Mayans. People are saying the wack-jobs that have this screwed misinterpretation of a goddamn calendar are the ones to be doubted

I think a super volcano is a planet's reset button. Maybe that is what caused the genetic bottleneck humanity had thousands of years ago. Volcano goes off, civilization crumbles, an ice age starts and we start over again.

And in 15,000 years future nations will be wondering how our species built the empire state building or the sydney opera house without their "modern" technology. They will have a version of ancient aliens on history channel where nutjobs debate chariots in the sky and how we all worshipped cellphones.

From a normal volcano, yes. What about a super volcano? If the state of wyoming is a caldera of a volcano, how much crap could it spew into the air? Possibly enough to block the sun long enough to create an iceage.

But as you said, that is 200,000 years from now. So everything is hunkydory.

:Broncos:

A super volcano is what I'm talking about.

It has enough power to blanket 3/4ths of the US in ash. The subsequent environmental impact would be roughly 3 years of temperatures at about 12 degrees fahrenheit.

It would kill a LOT of people, and wipe out many species, but I doubt it'd be the end of humanity this far along in our development and it sure as **** wouldn't start an ice age.

TheReverend
03-11-2011, 02:54 PM
On the subject of ice ages... we survived through the last ****ing one, and the next isn't due for like 80k years. There's also a cool theory that humans are the ones that ENDED the ice age by killing off the mammoths. That removed a large chunk of grazing population and allowed trees to grow taller and letting the tundras get overgrown and making spring warm quicker and ending the ice age.

By the time next one rolls around we'll probably be living on another planet

A super volcano would cool the atmosphere for about 5-10 years, after that the climate would warm even more, due to the volcanic emissions and gases.

To my understanding, 5-10 years SHOULD be the climates complete recovery time. It SHOULD warm after 3ish. I'm certain your professor is more qualified than I am, though, so I'll take his word for it as long as you're not misinterpreting what was said.

According to the show I was watching - the volcanic ash from a super vocano (Yellowstone) would block the sun for approx 2 years which they said was plenty enough time to bring on another Ice Age. They estimated survivor life expectancy at 5-6 years after eruption.

Apparently everything within a 300 mile radius of the eruption would be destroyed near instantly.

Pretty crazy stuff.

Well if you want to take a scientific angle the Earths magnetic field is weakening. This accounts for the unusual weather patterns (e.g. Hurricanes, Hot summers, cold winters). It could also have a dramatic effect on the massive earth quakes we are having, because it means that the earth core is either A. Hardening quicker, or B. is shifting. Most scientist belive that the earths core is shifting, and we could be encountering a phenominon that has happend only about 7 times in earth's history where the poles have switched. If you ask me I think we live on a dying planet, and we are starting to feel the death throws. Dying fast enought that it will effect the our generation...no. Fast enough that if we don't find another suitable environment for sustainable life in the next 10,000 years, yes.

The Conquistadores had nothing to do with me or my ancestors, who had fine relations with Native Americans until progressive morons became obsessed with Manifest Destiny.

The Spanish were particularly disgusting, having personally introduced the Arawaks to what hell was like.

The subject is much more nuanced than "America evil, everyone else good". There were many instances of good relations that the native americans gained from and enjoyed all throughout the history of relations. But the thing that stands out is that our elitist class continually made treaties with the native americans that the renegged on. Over and over again. And then they renegged on them by marching them into reservations in places that they were not pleased with.

Oklahoma capped it all off. A bunch of slimebags from the northeast heard wind that the legislation that gave Oklahoma to individual native americans was able to be worked for their gain. Oil was found and a bunch of butt faced lawyers from NY descended on Oklahoma and stole land from children...even orphans...by having them sign over their land rights. Unable to read or write and obviously incapable of understanding what they were doing, children put X's on those documents and lost their land to people who would sell it for mineral rights.

The Mayans are alive and well.

The Maya peoples constitute a diverse range of the Native American people of southern Mexico and northern Central America. The overarching term "Maya" is a convenient collective designation to include the peoples of the region who share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage; however, the term embraces many distinct populations, societies, and ethnic groups, who each have their own particular traditions, cultures, and historical identity.
There are an estimated 7 million Maya living in this area at the start of the 21st century.[1] Ethnic Maya of Guatemala, southern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, El Salvador, and western Honduras have managed to maintain substantial remnants of their ancient cultural heritage. Some are quite integrated into the modern cultures of the nations in which they reside, while others continue a more traditional culturally distinct life, often speaking one of the Mayan languages as a primary language.
The largest populations of contemporary Maya inhabit Guatemala, Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador, as well as large segments of population within the Mexican states of Yucatαn, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Chiapas.

The Mayans have a complex calendar with everything divided into 13 units (7 days, 6 nights) and it's based on time acceleration starting 16.4 billion years ago. Every level goes by quicker. We recently entered the universal phase. Each "day" and each "night" are now 20 days long. Each of these time units were about 20 years long two levels ago. Technology and the pace of events in the world keep accelerating.

Of course nothing is going to happen. Bigger and more frequent earthquakes? Actually, no. They have just had the bad luck to hit more populated areas. And the larger our worlds population gets, the more often this will happen. Climate change may well be real (and imo, man-made), but even that won't bring about the "end of the world." At worst, eventually, it might bring about the end of man - and the world will recover. It's a robust thing, it will be fine.

The entire premise of 2012 was based on a guy who wasn't qualified making broad leaps of logic on his translations of clay tablets. He was wrong. Of course, people don't realize the same guy who founded these 2012 ideas, is the same one who feels our planet has been and is still in the throes of an alien war, of which lizard aliens are prominently involved. If you think Sitchen was a stable guy who provided proof, I'd love to see what you are basing this on.

It's laughable to even think the Mayan culture, who thought was a good idea to literally pierce their dongs with a sharp stick, and then burn the blood to the "gods" (i.e. stars, sun and moon), could be in the know about advanced astrological events which WE don't even know about, with our advanced equipment.

Nothing major is going to happen.

I saw him doing a talk about one of his books on CSPAN a couple years ago and he was all over the place running around the stage and at one point he bent down for no real reason and tore his pants, loudly, along the outside seam and rather than tone it down he kept his schtick up for the rest of the talk. Earth Getting Mysteriously Windier

Occluded Mesocyclone TornadoMason Inman writes on National Geographic:

The world has gotten stormier over the past two decades — and the reason is a mystery, a new study says.

In the past 20 years, winds have picked up around 5 percent on average.

Extremely strong winds caused by storms have increased even faster, jumping 10 percent over 20 years, according to the new analysis of global satellite data.

The study, the first to look at wind speeds across such a large swath of the planet, bolsters some earlier findings, according to study leader Ian Young, of the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.

“Some regional studies had found similar results, so we suspected there may be an increasing trend,” Young said.

Lots of things are factors of wind. The most common is un even heating of the earths surface.

Water heats faster than land, so the heat rising over water is rising faster, land slower, but then it cools faster too, were as land cools slower. These air parcels which rise and fall because they are hot or cold are wind. Many other things contribute to this too. Rotation of the earth, poles, etc....But uneven heating does a lot and since there is a **** ton of water on this planet that is broken up by land near the equator (max sunlight, and heating) it can be a big phenomenon.

Possibly. I'm not sure how much maybe solar flares could "stir" up the winds either. Do winds increase during an ice age?

People don't realize just how much in flux the Earth really is.

Wind is generated by the heat from the Equator mixing with the cold air from the poles due to our shifting axis. If our axis was not constantly shifting at tilt we would see wind bands along the longitudes much like the big gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. Instead we have shifting jet streams and High and low pressure areas which cause weather.

The solar flares are deflected by the Magneto sphere and are gases of charged particles. When large solar events impact the Magneto sphere and the charged particles impact the Magneto sphere you get the Aurora borilais(sp?) which can be seen the closer you are to the poles because the Magneto sphere funnels particles through the poles.

Solar flares do not impact winds on Earth because of the Magneto sphere and because the flares are charged particles and wind is made up of the break down of chemical gases which heat and cool the air. They are 2 different types of science.

Personally I think people forget the Earth is in constant flux, the solid ground everyone thinks of as soild and stable is floating on magma and the orbit and wobble of the axis causes all sorts of unpredictablity.

Just because i'm learning:

Is pole flux affected by solar flares?

Would this then change the jet streams?

Just because i'm learning:

Is pole flux affected by solar flares?

Would this then change the jet streams?

Not from what I understand.

Check out the Solar Proton event: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_proton_event

To increase wind you would have to have more hot and cold air colliding, High and low pressure area's impact/define the jet stream. The way I understand it if you heated the poles there would be less cold air and more warm air, less collisions of hot and cold, and therefore less wind.

Next time there is a wicked thunderstorm predicted check out a weather map and notice where the high and low pressure systems are. If you have the luxury of time before, during, and after the storm go outside and make a note of the temp, if it is still, if you can see the line of clouds (front) coming in and watch how it goes from hot and still to cooler and windy and the temp after the storm goes through.

Droughts are nothing new. Hell, most of Russia was on fire last year - the fires they had make the Texas fires look like a campfire. Moscow was blanketed in smoke for weeks. Same with tornadoes - there are a couple super-cells each year that cause these sorts of tornado production. It really is normal - our pitiful record of storms in the last couple hundred years is a speck in time in our worlds history.

People say earthquakes we've been having are not normal. They are. Same with hurricanes, tornadoes, fires, etc. What makes them seem not normal is the media attention they garner.

Even if global climate change is not man-made, it is occurring, and can change some weather patterns. Check out the auroras on Saturn, the melting ice caps on Mars, the changes on other planets in our solar system. We are not the only planet going through some climate change.

The 2012 nonsense is based on NOTHING - nothing factual at least. It's whimsy and poor translation from Sitchen, further accelerated by $$$ - books sell - so do movies. The Mayan culture had been through other ages in their history, and a rogue brown dwarf sun (i.e. Nibiru) did not destroy our planet. Super volcanoes, comets, meteors nor earthquakes killed off civilization. The age changed, they built some temples in tribute, and the next age started. Expect more of the same, sans the temple building.

Mind.. one day, a super volcano WILL produce an extinction level event in our planets future. If we are advanced enough once it hits, perhaps we can control it.. maybe even harness the energy, or at least survive. But they do happen - the last around 75,000 years ago, which killed off about 65 to 70% of human life. It will happen eventually. I just sort of think it won't be next year.

Fantastic post.

I find it unreasonable when people look at mild (in relation to Earth's history) natural disasters and proclaim it a sign of the end.

The earth has dealt with countless super volcano eruptions, enormous asteroid impacts, unimaginable earthquakes as things like the Himalayas formed and when Pangaea ripped apart, ice ages, etc.

...and life perseveres. And in some of those cataclysmic occurrences, primitive HUMAN life has persevered.

We're survivors. When the next thing comes (and the odds of it being 2012 are pretty ridiculous), we'll survive. Because that's what we, as a species, do.

Yeah, I agree with this to a certain extent. But I think it might give our species a little too much credit. What we can be sure of is that the earth doesn't need saving. One way or another, in one form or another, it's going to keep on keeping on; life or no; us or no. People shouldn't really even talk about saving the planet. Let's call it what it is, let's talk about what it takes to preserve the human species. And at this point I wonder if increasing it at the rate we do is actually severely working against us.

But yeah, back on topic 2012 is the same bull**** as y2k. It will come and pass and a bunch of people will have new root cellars to store their potatoes and preserves.

Massive volcanoes, huge asteroids and killer earthquakes do occur. But they happen every several million years or so. I wouldn't get too uptight about 2012. No ancient civilization had the know-how to predict such an event, no matter what new-age, conspiracy-babble speak weirdos trying to sell books tell you. He had at least 8 major books he was selling. Sitchin had an agenda.

Take Japan and the recent Earthquake. People assume it's a new earthquake proving the world is changing. Guess what... an identical sort of earthquake hit 100 years ago in Japan, causing a similar tsunami. In fact, one village built a massive wall to protect their town due to that very tsunami. Didn't help though, it was still 90% obliterated. Mother nature can be nasty.

But there is nothing to 2012, other than perhaps record-high gas prices.

http://www.answers.com/topic/maya-calendar

Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a New Age belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b'ak'tun.

Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, notes that "for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". She considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."[14] The 2009 science fiction apocalyptic disaster film 2012 is based on this belief.

But they are predicting Tebow to be our starter.

I've come to a conclusion about the doomsdayer mentality of those on the mane and beyond.

Their ongoing obsession with the apocalypse is really just a form of perverse wishful thinking that maybe some final event will save them from the hard work of being present.

Our only chance as a human species is to populate other worlds.

Do you have a football calender for Orangemane meltdowns? If you track the pattern there is clear pattern to a server meltdown in 2013 when Tebow throws a touchdown in the Superbowl ending the Broncos Superbowl drought. I think it was on the new Mayan calender or something.

You should publish a book. "Life after the apocalypse" and make millions from our misery. :giggle:

Sometime in the next 5 billion years the sun will enter it's red giant phase and the surface of the sun will extend out past the orbit of the earth. There will be no keeping on for the earth after that.

From my perspective, 2012 has already started...for a while. But it's not anything like the marketing and hype of the event.

I have to admit at first I called it total BS but I have to admit after looking at the earth lately they be on to something.

Bigger and more Earthquakes
Bigger and more Hurricanes
Bigger winters
hotter summers
Bigger Solar flairs
Volcanoes are becoming more active
flooding is becoming out of control.

Just sayin'

Unprecedented Solar Eruption

Posted by majestic on June 8, 2011

According to C. Alex Young, a solar astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, yesterday’s massive Coronal Mass Ejection on the Sun is “nothing we really have to worry about.” Try telling that to Lawrence E. Joseph, who in the disinformation documentary 2012: Science or Superstition, claims that there is a correlation between heightened solar storms and alarming meteorological and atmospheric changes on Earth.

Hmmm. Whatever the case it’s awe inspiring (see Young’s video below). He says that “the sun produced a quite spectacular prominence eruption that had a solar flare and high-energy particles associated with it, but I’ve just never seen material released like this before. It looks like somebody just kicked a giant clod of dirt into the air and then it fell back down.”

See when I first heard about 2012 I was no, no, no but I have to say they may be on to something.

Oh by the way my Birthday is on Dec 20, so next year I am going to throw the most epic B-day bash ever and see what happens at midnight. I have already made plans to rent a sports bar, and am going to play Denver broncos and Portland trail blazers games on all the tv's.

Anyone in the Portland area is welcome. It will be at Park City Pub.

I don't think it's going to live up to the marketing promises.

The changes have already started though....it's not going to be a "poof" sort of thing.

that's the least of my concerns. The NFL jumped the shark and it's product is getting worse every year.

the changing sun, socio-economic problems, etc etc - are a much bigger thing to me.

BUUUUT - you say nothing is happening and to just watch football....sooo...yeah.

*I don't believe in some big mythological event like...superman coming back to save us with mininukes and antigrav...just an observation of cycles in nature and in an anthropological sense.

lol

Please explain to me the anthropological shift underway.

And the sun is changing? Or are we better equipped to monitor it and have no sample size to compare it against?

And socio-economic problems are new, eh?

Fooled the **** out of me, bro.

Here we are, half way through the year and it is looking more and more likely that 2012 is indeed going to happen, very likely right when 2011 ends. There is still time, but how much? I suppose we could always just keep adding days to the calendar...

Not to drag this backwards a few pages or anything, BUT let's drag this back a few pages and let me say that the best thing you can carry for a zombie attack is a .22. Hollow points of course. They will get the job done and you can carry a LOT of ammunition compared to anything else.

'Controlled' power cuts likely as Sun storm threatens national grid

That's just a preventative measure, something they should have already taken into account. It doesn't mean we are going to have X-class killer flare that is going to fry all the power grids. The sun goes through 9-12 year cycles (usually called the 11 year cycle), and it just started a new one.. in which they say there will be very little activity, and almost no sunspots.

So I guess we don't need to worry about that for 11 years or so.

We'll see. I can find any source to discredit any source. I just find the vulnerability to an aging power system fascinating. You'd almost think people would want something else, more robust and reliable.

Perhaps in 50 years, we'll have an exceptionally cold winter. That doesn't cooincide with the theory that in 2012, which is what this thread is about. Mini ice age just means some colder winters, with perhaps some more serious ramifications if it persists. Even duing the last "mini ice age," there was only one extremely cold winter. But it happens.. the earth will continue to heat and cool, not much we can do about that.

The sun certainly won't be blowing up any power grids any time soon however.
