johnelway John Elway
Champ is truly one of the NFL's elite players, a 10-time Pro Bowler who is playing at the absolute highest level.

johnelway John Elway
The commitment and loyalty that Champ has shown to the Broncos, the city of Denver and this region is exemplary.

johnelway John Elway
We're fortunate to have Champ with the Broncos for a long time. This is a GREAT day for our entire organization and our fans.

i agree but there are no sure fire DL talent at the top of the draft.

one thing i would be interested in is seeing how much it would cost to acquire Haynesworth.

he has worn out his welcome in Washington and might be available for an ok price(Orton and a conditional pick?) and supposedly his mega deal was very front loaded so it wouldn't cost as much as many think.

He hasn't looked great in Washington but that is due to his being used inappropriately as a NT in a 3-4 instead of in a 4-3.

i want Peterson more now that Champ is signed. now that Peterson wouldn't be placed in a situation where he is expected to take over and play at the level of a HOF CB. now he can pair with a learn from Champ. i understand the comparison but it isn't like that at all right now.

look at it this way, this is a team in dire need of some nasty players, guys with nasty attitudes that opponents hate to face. Haynesworth is that, and on a new team he is going to be looking to prove his critics wrong. the guys who claim he has lost a step, isn't worth it, or that he got complacent after his contract was signed.

when he has a reason to play hard there is no more dominant force at DT in the league

i'd like Von Miller a whole lot in Denver, as well as Clay Matthews little brother in the middle rounds.

i keep looking at the top of the draft and Bowers, Fairley, Dareus don't strike me as forces worthy of the number 2 selection. Miller on the other hand has playmaker written all over him, granted it may be early to take him at 2, but i want a difference maker not a body to plug into the line.

This was the first and most major step to getting our defense back on track. Excited to see how our 4-3 looks this fall.

Also, this keeps us from being handicapped in the draft. If champ was not here next year a 1st or 2nd round corner would be the top priority, now we can focus on other things if we so choose or still take Peterson.

Dude, this is my current Mock Draft. 1- Marcell Dareus, 2a- Phil Taylor, 2b- Kyle Rudolph. Can you imagine getting Dareus and Taylor, they could potentially be our version of the "Williams Wall" for a very long time. Getting Johnson to lock down the LDE with Doom at RDE and rotating in Ayers between the two end spots, and shifting him inside to rush on nickle packages. That is a damn fine outcome if we can make it happen. It's my dream scenario. Especially if we can add a stud MLB, like Stephen Tulloch. Wow.

Champ is an aging CB who's gonna move to safety in 2-3 years. Peterson makes even more sense now IMO. Champ can mentor him while they play side by side for a few years and not miss a beat when Champ moves to safety. I'd rather be stuck looking for PP's replacement at CB2 than Champ's at CB1 three years from now.

Peterson @ #2, use the next 3 picks on front 7 and find your stud ILB next year since it's a way better crop.

I doubt this mean Peterson is or isn't the pick. Broncos other cbs all suck so either way Peterson a first day starter barring injury. You need 2 good ones and a 3rd and 4th decent one so plenty of room there.

I'm with you all though if the scouts, and Elway, Xanders feel either Fairly or Dareus, or Bowers is a total stud lets go for it. Until we have someone who dominates the trenches we won't stop the run.

Peterson does look good though on punt returns. That is a good indicator he is super athletic.

I won't panic if Broncos don't go dline with first pick either. I even think Green is on the Broncos radar. Just because no matter what people say at top of the draft you want TD scorers, QB blind side protectors, or guys that hunt the QB. If your Elway and you have people you respect saying these dlineman are decent prospects, but this Green kid going to be unstoppable wouldn't that tempt you? I mean you cant just say Matt Millen did that and pass on the kid if hes that good can you?

Not saying I know i watch very little college ball.

Wow.

I love Rudolph. Would be so sweet to get him somehow. He would be a great help to a QB like Tebow. Big, fast, with good hands. Rudolph is a stud.......probably. :)

There was some nervousness last week when Champ Bailey let it be known he was putting his Denver home on the market.

Bailey said deep down he never wanted to leave Denver.

“I feel like I’m a Denver native. I’m not from here, but it feels good here. I feel like I’m home. That played a big part in my decision to stay, because I want to help make this city proud,” he said. “It’s been a while. I don’t think we’ve done anything good since the (2005 AFC) championship game. The fans deserve it, and I want to be a part of making it happen for them.”

So heading into the draft (assuming the CBA isn't done first and we have Free Agency), the 4-3 is looking something like:

DE: Elvis Dumervil, Jason Hunter
DE: Robert Ayers, David Veikune
DT: Jamal Williams
DT: Justin Bannan
WLB: DJ Williams, Wesley Woodyard
MLB: Joe Mays
SLB: Mario Haggan
CB: Champ Bailey, Syd'Quan Thompson
CB: Andre Goodman, Perrish Cox
S: Brian Dawkins, David Bruton
S: Renaldo Hill, Darcel McBath

It looks so much worst when it's all spelled out.

We need better linebacker. At any spot really. We need 2 new safetys. Dawkins just looks slow now, and Hill isn't playing well anymore. Goodman is not very good either. Maybe Cox turns into a good player but he has some problems also. Bannan and Williams just look tired by the end of games.

Hopefully draft provides at least 2 starters on defense.

DE - Ayers
DT - Bannan

Doesn't look pretty.

Montrose, how do you see Bannan fairing in a 4-3 defense? He doesn't strike me at all as being a penetrating UT type, more of a NT type? I could envisage him splitting snaps with Williams perhaps while we try to find a playmaking DT (Fairley or Dareus if we pick #2) in the draft.

I also wonder if one of Vickerson and Thomas will manage to stick around as depth, both of them showed the odd glimmer last year that gave me hope they'd be useful depth at UT.

Linebacker has to be addressed in FA, I'd expect us to make a very strong bid to sign James Anderson to play SOLB. Him along with DJ at the OLB spots would be a step in the right direction.

As for MLB, hopefully we can find some sort of stop-gap player in FA. None of the prospects in the draft seem to be generating any sort of buzz as a long term solution at MIKE, next year seems like it will be much stronger so if we can add some good young talent on the line this year hopefully we'll be in a spot where we can take a first round MLB in the 2012 draft.

If we are ranked 20th in total defense it will be a freakin miracle to me. Our DT's are trash, Ayers is unproven, Dumervil a liability in the run game, our LB's are pretty much trash aside from an above-average DJ Williams, our depth at CB sucks and our safeties are old and slow.

That said, I think we have to look at DT, and I think the only possibility is Dareus.
I pray Carolina takes Fairley, some team wants Newton and offers their 1st and 2nd, we move down a couple spots and take Dareus. The likelihood of that happening? Slim to none.

A competent front seven more likely. People forget shutting down the run on early downs and forcing second and third and long is just as helpful as a competent pass rush. It makes the offense more predictable and the pass defense more effective as well as helps on third down % and stopping big plays on second and short.

The players know what's up. McDaniels has to get rid of a pro bower or two every season. Since he wasn't replacing them, Champ was going away this season to fill the quota.Clady or Lloyd would have been out next season and the other would have been gone a year after that. Then McDaniels would have quit because he wouldn't have any pro boilers that he could get rid of.

BUT.....You think half of us use twitter? Probably more like 10%

hahaha

well, i would say 95% of news breaks or leaks on twitter before ANYWHERE else, and given that people here like urgency and accuracy, it would make sense for them to be part of twitter...

I am also psyched that BLloyd is amped, too. We need to keep him a Bronco for a long time too. Both those guys are freakish athletes. Their suddenness is just amazing.

This kind of points to a few of the reasons I was ecstatic Coach Fox came here. He seems to be very well respected and knows what to do and how to go about it. John Fox seems to be (exactly) the right guy at (exactly) the right time. At least to me he does.

I agree. Even if he never wins a SB, something I think he can do BTW, he's the kind of respected, wise, veteran coach this team was in dire need of after two year of a bunch of guys learning on the job. He's already handling things with a lot of grace and class.

Yep. I agree with this. I think he's capable of winning a SB, but at this point, my highest expectation is that I want to see this team back on stable ground. I absolutely believe John Fox is the right guy for that job. What happens after we're on stable ground.... I'd like to believe that Fox can take us beyond that point, but I'll wait until we're at least .500 before dreaming too big.

Exactly. There aren't too many things in life that are perfect. But, John Fox, especially with Elway at the helm, seems to be a perfect match for the Broncos right here, right now.

My all time favorite defensive player, no doubt. Elway, Davis, Sharpe, and Bailey would be my Broncos Mt. Rushmore

Which gives me a great idea for a sig. If we still had them, and I knew how to make them. But still a good idea.

Our last defensive-minded HC we've had was Wade Phillips and he didn't fare too well.

I believe this time around, Fox is better prepared and 10 times the headcoach Wade was back then...and even now...

As long as Fox lets his OC game plan and call the plays, we wouldn't be worrying too much about the offense

Maybe Broncos imploding so bad will end up good for us in the long run. I don't think Broncos will be making too made decisions next yr or so based on money and business. I think they are going to do whatever they can to get a decent team again, or risk losing fans and stature in the NFL. Some already lost, but we can still turn it around.

It's lame cheating. I want stick a finger in your eye in the pile and steal ball from you dirty. I want you hit our QB in the back, we hit yours in the head. You hit us late, we stick a foot in your ass etc etc. I'm sick of watching the Broncos get pushed around. I want some nasty back in the mix.

We need some defenders who can put the fear of your day being over into players. When Atwater, Dennis Smith, roamed around players were afraid for there health. Right now I don't think there is any Bronco defender other NFL players are scared of.

Trust me when teams play the Steelers they are worried. Thats why they win a lot. Because they are mean and nasty.

Thomas has got to be in the mix at DT, no?

He's a UFA, along with Vickerson.

You know I'm really not sure. Fox said the other day he envisions those two guys as the DTs but I agree with you that he doesn't appear to be the penetrating type. I thought Bannan was okay at best but in fairness to the defensive personnel it can tough to fairly evaluate them considering they were playing with a bottom-5 offense in 3rd down conversion percentage and time-of-possession (I'm looking at you Orton).

Yes we all know the defense sucks, no doubt about that. But is it time to consider the possibility that a unit featuring at least 6 regulars over 30-years old (Bannan, Jamal, Haggan, Champ, Dawk, Hill, Goodman) might wear down when their offense is 3-and outing so much and putting them back on the field over and over again? Again, not saying the D was good - it wasn't - but if the offense could've stayed on the field a little longer it may have helped them out a little bit.

Good Post Montrose.

Another thing that I haven't really had an explanation for is from the 09 season to the 10 season we improved defensive players(Our Defensive Line was better in '10 than
'09) . Why then were we SOOOO bad? I think it had more to do with the scheme and coaches than originally thought. The only person we really lost was Doom but he shouldn't have had that much of an impact.

I really believe the main reason was they were not being used correctly by Wink and when we lost a good Defensive Coordinator in Nolan our defense was done for.

Interior OLine had more to do with our O's woes than almost anything else, that and McD decision to go with rookies there- esp @ Center when we didn't really have to.

I really believe the main reason was they were not being used correctly by Wink and when we lost a good Defensive Coordinator in Nolan our defense was done for.

The coaching may very well have been a major reason for the drop off from 2009-to-2010 defensively but we have to keep in mind the 2009 defense was far worse late in the year than it was at the beginning.

Looking at the personnel, Williams and Bannan were upgrades from Fields and Peterson - but (imo) their wasn't enough rotation with those guys and their backups.

You simply can't understate the loss of Doom, while he's a liability against the run the guy's 17 sacks were so sorely missed on passing downs. Keep in mind that the 2009 defense had 39 sacks - you take out Doom's 17 and that's puts the entire rest of the team at 22 which would've been tied for 31st in the league. Those numbers held true in 2010 with the team having 23 sacks - good for last in the league.

The inability to put pressure on the QB was compounded with an extra year of age to the secondary who were also in-and-out of the lineup with Dawkins, Hill and Goodman.

Elsewhere you had Haggan bouncing from ILB to OLB, Ayers missing time with the broken foot and Hunter learning to play OLB for the 1st time in his career when he was only picked up mid-way through the preseason.

And then, again, we have to go back to the fact the Broncos offense was one of the 5-worst in football at staying on the field. Sure Orton could throw bombs and rack up yards when the game was out of reach (Bal, SD, StL) but the offensive drop-off from 2009-to-2010 really hurt.

All those things combined, IMO, helped contribute to why the defense got worse in 2010.
