Obama and Hilliary at odds over Egypt

On Saturday, the Times, quoting numerous White House sources, sought to explain the Obama administration's erratic policy statements during the Egyptian crisis.

The paper reported that Obama was "seething" over State Department officials's statement suggesting that the administration did not want a quick transition of power in Egypt, with President Hosni Mubarak stepping down from his office immediately.

Obama felt that the State Department "made it look as if the administration were protecting a dictator and ignoring the pleas of the youths of Cairo."

As Secretary Clinton and her special envoy Frank Wisner repeatedly called for an orderly transition that would include President Mubarak remaining in office for at least a period of time, Obama and his team studiously sought to undermine the State Department stance.

The Times states that Mr. Obama "was furious" about Clinton's and Wisner's statements, "as Mr. Obama was demanding that change in Egypt begin right away."

Secretary Clinton was not the only figure who opposed Obama's view. Clinton was joined by Vice President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who also were advocating that Obama adhere to a cautious and more traditional foreign policy approach toward the situation in Egypt.



Not saying I know what should be done with Egypt and countries like Bahrian, but its never good when the President doesn't listen to def sec, sec of state, and the VP....is it?

I bet this paves the way for Clinton to bow out, then get ready to plan the rest of her career and possible run for President. Maybe even against Obama.

One would think that the president would prevail in a pissing contest with a walking vagina like Billary -- but apparently not.

Well its not a prediction game. Everyone knew he was going it was more how quickly it happened. Most in the admin favored the slower approach we always do, Obama is inexperienced and wanted to go with the people of Egypt.

Hard to say who was right until we see if the vacume is bad for Egypt.

I think it is safe to say though either way it was happening. Even had Obama wanted to go with Billiary on this Mubarak falls.

I think Obama did ok but him not controlling his admin is further signs of strain between him and Clinton. Its only a matter of time before shes gone.

No, even there he was right. Mubarak announced he was staying when and things immediately got to the tipping point. He needed to be gone pronto, any longer and the slightest hint of U.S. involvement would have been damaging. As for controlling his administration... This sort of thing happens fairly often. Truman and the State Department, Eisenhower and Kennedy with some wings of the military, many people in Reagan's administration publicly chided his economic policies, etc.

Wonder what direction America will take with our new Secretaries of State and Defense. Gates has already said this is his last year. The legacy difference between the outgoing two is Gates did an avergae job (above average at trimming fat and improving communication at the DoD, but below in his war handeling and project management) while Hilldo has been a forign policy disaster and aimless in her intelligence pursuits.

Yeah but if he sets that precedent. The precedent that if enough people protest America will say your leader should step aside, is a dangerous one. Already he is behind the 8 ball in Bahrain. Does he come out now and say the monarchy should go? Can you at least see why most Presidents would have played that differently?

If Hillary leaves she leaves behind an administration poisoned with Clinton Loyalists. She can take a big ripe dump on Obama anytime she wants to.

During the elections I lost faith in our process of government when I watched Obama gut his campaign of the people who got him started and replaced them all with former Democratic blue bloods and Clinton loyalists.

There is a war between the DNC and the RNC where the only victims are the poor mopes called voters who think they care about what they think.
