Devlin: Pueblo wrestler hopes to be "charter" champion
By Neil H. Devlin
The Denver Post
POSTED: 02/17/2011 01:00:00 AM MST

"It's hard to win, but I'm going to do it this year."

Mario Garcia wasn't sounding like some would-be hip-hop star this week. No chest-thumping or running of the mouth for him. He adheres to the wrestlers' code of quiet humility heading into the 76th state tournament, which begins today at the Pepsi Center.

It's just that the senior at Dolores Huerta in Pueblo has been so close to a weight-class championship that he can taste it. It has been just out of his reach, the proverbial carrot always dangling in front of him.

A champion wrestling medal isn't fool's gold. His Class 3A charter school it opened in 2004 hasn't had one yet, but Super Mario, top- ranked at 189 pounds, is intent on becoming the charter member of what he hopes will be a big club.

"It would be amazing," he said.

Three years ago, the humble, unassuming wrestler who has been going at it since the third grade at Cesar Chavez Academy surprised himself by placing at 171 pounds.

"I was saying it would be nice, wouldn't it, to place. Then I took third and went, 'Dang.' I knew I had the potential," he said.

A year later, he went 38-3 to finish fourth at 171 and push his two-year mark to 73-6.

And in the 2009-10 season, he took it a step further, finishing second at 171 as he was 40-2, yet still came up short of the top stand on the podium.

"It was crushing," Garcia said. "I didn't go out there and wrestle, I didn't have my game plan, I wasn't good on my feet."

That and he realized the competition proved to be better than he was. He used it as motivation to prepare for this season.

"He could very well have been a three-timer, but that's why you wrestle the matches," Scorpions coach Shane Cornella said. "He never makes excuses. I make more excuses than he does."

Garcia decided to up his training. He had been a football player, but the school experienced financial problems before reorganizing.

Multiple sports were dropped, football one of them, so what was a young Scorpion to do as a release?
He had the opportunity to vie for the starting running back position at Pueblo East. Dolores Huerta student-athletes were permitted to compete at other schools within the district, and the school will restart all canceled sports next school year. But Garcia passed to work harder on wrestling.

"I wanted to play football, but I didn't want to risk my chance by getting injured," Garcia said.

Said Cornella: "He just kept remembering . . . he just kept saying, 'I'm not losing.' He became that much more dedicated."

But it can be funny when chasing your Holy Grail. Garcia tweaked a hamstring before Christmas, the major reason his season record is only 14-1. The Scorpions' coaches were as careful as church mice with him down the stretch of the season.

It worked he insists he's 100 percent and there will be no excuses when he begins preliminaries tonight near the early dinner hour.

"It's here," Garcia said.

He longs to hear: "And the champion at Class 3A, 189 pounds . . . Mario Garcia of Dolores Huerta."

Said Garcia, "Words can't describe how good it will feel."

I so wanted a pegboard at my HS to try it based on this movie. We were too small to have a wrestling program...do the coaches actually wear singlets like in this clip?

Personally, if they do it in baseball and wrestling...they should do it in all sports. Karl in a Nugg outfit....McD in pads. Hilariousness would ensue.

I loved wrestling because it gives the light weights a chance to be varsity where sports like football you have no chance. I wouldnt encourage it for my kids. I was ready to go up to 105 pounds for my sophmore year but when I hit the flu over Christmas vacation, I dropped to an AIDS looking 96 pounds (According to my Mom).I was 5 foot 2 inches at the time. I decided to wrestle 98 pounds and did so with a ton of dieting, running and 3 pounds lost every practice (the walls would sweat in that room). By the time we had our banquet about 3 weeks after the season, I went from 103 (which is the allowed weight at the end of the season) to 119. The sport stunts your growth when you are fighting your natural growth. Enjoyed it for two years but I decided that I liked to just be "normal". Also, what chick in high school is going to date a guy that weighs less than her?

Haha he's pretty quick for 189. But usually he wins with pure power. His legs are unbelievably strong so he gets an arm on your leg its a piledrive 9 times out of 10. He wrestles a black dude named Macchione tonight. I saw the kid wrestle Thursday he looks damn good as his 33-1 record would attest. Should be a tough match he looks quicker than Mario but Mario looks stronger. Mario struggles against tall lanky guys which this kid is not. So I think Mario is gonna do great tonight

Looks like Carmelo15's cousin lost a close decision 5-4 in the finals tonight.

That sucks, I was pulling for him to win it all.

Disappointing. He obviously didn't take my advice and watch Vision Quest or at least rock some Journey before the match. Only the young...

That sucks hard. Losing so closely is a really, really tough pill to swallow. At least I got my ass handed to me HARD immediately so I had no future delusions of what might have been.

Either way, he should be proud of his accomplishment. Quite a feat to make it that far!

It was a tough match. Mario wanted to win this so badly and he worked his ass off to get there. One of our cousins passed away unexpected in October. He also took 2nd in state about 15 years ago. Anyways him & Mario were very close so that made this a very emotional loss. I feel bad for Mario but he had a lot of support there with him last night and he wrestled his heart out. Everyone was proud of him.

Thanks for rooting for him fellow Maners
