Let's hope the numbers 2 and 1 pop up.

Packers. I believe in Karma.
Ben is going to lose today.

It would the the best in life to see the Packers crush the Steelers. To see Roethlisberger driven before the Packer defense, and to hear the lamentation of Ben's women.

I'm just watching for the commercials this year. I have thought long and hard about which team to pull for and it's like trying to pick between turnips and beets. Yuck.

When Denver won the Super Bowl in 1997-98, this song did not exist unfortunately:( All the more reason why the Broncos have to get back there. Super Sunday belongs to this franchise. It's our day.

I thought this week that I'd put money down on the Steelers until I heard Pouncey was out. I think this game is a toss up, should be a good one. I don't really care who wins it, although I don't want Roth to win another one so that the media talks about how he "led" his team to a SB. A future HOF facepalm. I wouldn't mind GB winning so I can imagine Favre at home realizing the Pack didn't need him to get there.

If I could get granted one wish about the game I would wish someone would in the process of tackling rapistburger pull his pants down around his ankles and expose a two inch penis for all one billion viewers to see with the announcer quipping, well now we know why he has to rape for sex.

This is the least excited I've been about a Super Bowl in a long time. It's not about the teams either...with the looming CBA crap and the state of our team, I'm in a general NFL malaise.

Will the fighters fly over the stadium again this year?

reminding us to support the troops. Well, here's a poem I just received about a GI just-returned from Iraq. Probably written by his wife.

She asks: why do they return the body bags in the dead of night?
America: F*ck your yellow ribbons!

"For Eli"

By Andrea Gibson

Eli came back from Iraq
and tattooed a teddy bear onto the inside of his wrist
above that a medic with an IV bag
above that an angel

but Eli says the teddy bear won't live
and I know I don't know but I say, "I know"
cause Eli's only twenty-four and I've never seen eyes
further away from childhood than his
eyes old with a wisdom
he knows I'd rather not have.

Eli's mother traces a teddy bear onto the inside of my arm
and says, "not all casualties come home in body bags"
and I swear
I'd spend the rest of my life writing nothing
but the word light at the end of this tunnel
if I could find the ****ing tunnel.

I'd write nothing but white flags
somebody pray for the soldiers
somebody pray for what's lost
somebody pray for the mailbox
that holds the official letters
to the mothers,
--------------fathers,
--------------------sisters,
and little brothers
of Micheal 19... Steven 21... John 33
how ironic that their deaths sound like bible verses.

the hearse is parked in the halls of the high school
recruiting black, brown and poor.
while anti-war activists
outside walter reed army hospital scream
100, 000 slain
as an amputee on the third floor
breathes forget-me-nots onto the window pain.

but how can we forget what we never knew
our sky is so perfectly blue it's repulsive
somebody tell me where god lives
cause if god is truth god doesn't live here.

our lies have seared the sun too hot to live by
there are ghosts of kids who are still alive
toting M16s with trembling hands
while we dream ourselves stars on Survivor
another missile sets fire to the face in the locket
of a mother who's son needed money for college
and she swears she can feel his photograph burn.

how many wars will it take us to learn
that only the dead return
the rest remain forever caught between worlds of
shrapnel shatters body of three year old girl
to
welcome to McDonalds can I take your order?

the mortar of sanity crumbling
stumbling back home to a home that will never be home again.
Eli doesn't know if he can ever write a poem again.

one third of the homeless men in this country are veterans
and we have the nerve to Support Our Troops
with pretty yellow ribbons
while giving nothing but dirty looks to their outstretched hands
tell me what land of the free
sets free its eighteen-year-old kids into greedy war zones
hones them like missiles
then returns their bones in the middle of the night
so no one can see.

each death swept beneath the carpet and hidden like dirt
each life a promise we never kept
Jeff Lucey came back from Iraq
and hung himself in his parents basement with a garden hose
the night before he died he spent forty five minutes on his fathers lap
rocking like a baby
rocking like daddy, save me
and don't think for a minute he too isn't collateral damage.

in the mansions of Washington they are watching them burn
and hoarding the water
no senators' sons are being sent out to slaughter
no presidents' daughters are licking ashes from their lips
or dreaming up ropes to wrap around their necks
in case they ever make it home alive
our eyes are closed.

america
there are souls in
the boots of the soldiers
america
**** your yellow ribbon
you wanna support our troops
bring them home
and hold them tight when they get here.

Gaff...this is a thread about the Super Bowl. Please do not try to derail threads into political matters. You did this with Sassy's thread a long time ago and you were warned not to continue but you didn't give a ****, so you went on timeout. You are getting another warning. You are free to express your opinions, but you are not free to hijack football threads. Please stop. Keep it up and you'll be on vacation......preferably in Israel.

then the poem is totally relevant.

Who are you to tell this wife of a veteran she does not belong here?

For the eighth time, this is a thread to discuss the Super Bowl game. It's a GDT, not a political free for all. Finding some extraneous, attenuated connection with the military doesn't give you free reign to hijack the thread. This is a GDT, not a political thread. Please do not hijack it. What?

Every year the NFL allows the SB to be a venue to extoll the war machine. This has been going on for years. I did not start it.

I love the NFL but I am not happy with the way it is being used. At least one veteran's wife agrees.

You can ban me -- but you can't ban the truth. Which, as the wife sorrowfully writes "Is not to be found here."

One of the absolutely worst renditions of the National Anthem ever. Pisses me off every year they use some "pop diva" to do it. It isn't a soul/hip hop song, give it the gravity and respect it deserves. Sounded like a strangling cat for cripes sake.

What ever happened to talent?

You mean the talent that relies on doing the whole show lip sync style? At least this is live, not my favorite but doing it live gets points from me. At least it was fun, not canned like most acts.

I thought Michael Jackson had a good SB performance way back when. That might have been 15 years ago. I would have thought Katy Perry would have been the go to girl this year. My vote would have been for Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. That would have been a pretty good combo.

but is it a spectacle? Like it or not, the Superbowl is a spectacle. The performances are designed to be larger than life. Today that usually means pop acts. It's not about the music, or even the specific performance, it's how does the act translate into light shows and fireworks.

I don't know about spectacle, but I far preferred Tom Petty a couple years ago and even Bruce Springsteen's gig to the BEPs. My folks did as well. At least Petty and his boys looked to be enjoying it. Connected with a broader demographic than the craptastic show put on tonight.

No. We took Ayers at 18 when our own scouting department wanted to take Mathews who went to Gb at 26. I have no problem with the Knowshon pick. Watched him at Georgia and felt good about it and still do. I was afraid Ayers was a flash in the pan, but felt Mathews would be a 10 year + warrior for some one. It was in the genes.

If close was due to compelling play on defense, that would bve one thing. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case. This game has been ugly from the get go. If it wasn't the Superbowl and just happened to be a Sunday game on before the Broncos, most here would have said F-it and found something else to do until the Bronco game came on.
