Pretty simple. If the webmaster of that site is an American citizen then he is subject to US law. China is not.

I've often wondered why sites like this and something like a napster don't just set up shop in a foreign country that allows it and tell the US to thumb their cracks for a while.

It's silly to attempt to lock down intellectual property.

We have trade laws with China. All we have to do is adjust our trade laws.

We cant do that with the Obama administration becoming further and further in debt to China though.

Laws already are enforced, employers already do get fined. There is no simple solution that you can spout off on an internet message board that will solve this problem.

No, we dont enforce our immigration laws. Thats what the whole "Arizona" thing was all about, remember? Arizona tried to force the federal government to enforce the law and Obama had Holder sue Arizona for it?

No, you are claiming that because there are situations where people are able to break the law that the laws aren't enforced. This is not true. Otherwise we would have no need for courtrooms in this country.

It's good to know that the DHS, ICE, and USAG are dedicating their resources to stop piracy of live sports broadcasts. Maybe they can address those other issues like the Mexican border, the "war on drugs", terrorism, and the violation of constitutional rights by the police state after they get the important stuff knocked out.

It would not be worth it. Honestly, you would probably have less of a chance getting into actual trouble if you offered to smuggle cocaine across the southern border.

When was the last time a conventional force beat an unconventional force in war? That's kinda how I see the fight - an insurgency. You have the bad guys (copyright infringers) fighting against the system (copyright owners) and you have the army (gov't) thinking they can step in and squash the fighters or scare them away. However, the ability to become a rebel for a short period then disappear back into the woodwork gives the rebels extra courage and makes the picture too convuluted for the big guys to really identify who to go after. The rebels, meanwhile, will continue to go untouched (in the larger sense) and just countering the slow-evolving and predictable TTPs of the larger, more constrained and less agile force while burning the resources of the larger force.

I wouldn't be surprised if this stuff drags on for some time and people just start screaming for it to be a personal matter for the individuals and the courts.

Unless you are the British in Malaysia it rarely happens. At the end of the day this move is worthless.

Iraq, arguably
Iraq vs. Kurds - definitely
Colombia
Nicaragua
Guatemala
Grenada
East Timor
Balkans
Chechnya - arguably
Egypt
Algeria

Those are a few post WW2 examples - usually overwhelming force grinds down an insurgency unless it enjoys a large proportion of popular support. It takes time, ruthlessness, and in some cases near genocide to win.

But even in those cases where suppression is most successful, it rarely eliminates the opposition entirely. Even then, as you said, it tajes drastic measures to accomplish such. I just don't see the gov't being so dedicated to the cause to do anything more than cause a minor disruption which, as we've seen in this thread, just causes publicity and often makes the problem worse.

I worked with a Kurd in '05. You should've seen him glow when he told the story about how his brother personally slit the throat of a mayor or governor in Mosul. The sentiment behind such a scenario never fades.
