I like the realistic aspects of the movie. You know, like sawing a truck in half... and traumatic ocular evisceration. Just like the real thing.

I think it was called Playmakers.. It was great TV, but the NFL was threatening to pull MNF from ESPN if they continued to air it if I remember correctly. Crackheaded running backs, gay tight ends being kept in the closet by owners.. Probably hit a little too close to home for the NFL,,

Friday Night Lights, AGS, The Program, Remember the Titans - all tops in my list.

Any Given Sunday is definitely more a great movie about Football, not necessarily a great football movie...if that makes sense. Oliver Stone did a good job of sensationalizing every aspect of pro-ball.

Ok, so you're putting "Invincible" above "Any Given Sunday???"

and Pacino had TWO great speeches in that

the one where he tells Beamon that he is sitting the playoff game and that have Spartucus in the background and the final speech ("its a game of inches, and they're all around us")

And "Blindside" sucked

yea, ESPN had to pull it because the NFLPA threatened to do something and then the NFL stepped in and made that threat

it was a great show though

Good point. Of course the story was embellished a bit, but what in Hollywood isn't?

I remember he caught a lot of heat for that role like the guy from "Something About Mary."

Any Given Sunday was an okay movie. Nothing special about it. It was way over the top at times, like anything can happen any given Sunday, but in that movie it happened every single Sunday.

Rudy and Remember the Titans are my two favorites. Any Given Sunday don't really compare to those movies in my book. I like The Program a lot too. It came out when I was in high school and I went to see it with my entire football team, which made the movie even better. We were pretty pumped after watching it.

As for greatest football movie, I haven't been particularly impressed by really any of them. Any Given Sunday was okay. Friday Night Lights on TV is quite good, but its not NFL related (oddly, I've never seen the movie). The Replacements was funny, but I refuse to list anything with Keanu Reeves as greatest of anything.

Necessary Roughness

Yeah, that one. I've always wanted to make the sequel "Legal Use of Hands".

Anyways, I just checked and Mike Shanahan is listed in the credits of "Any Given Sunday" as a 'project consultant'. I've always thought Pacino based a lot of his character on him. When that movie was made, Shanahan was coming off two Super Bowls and considered the best coach in the game.

Any Given Sunday was a damn good movie. In my opinion I think Friday Night Lights was better cause when it came out I was just beginning high school and It fit so perfectly to how my high school football was like and everytime I watch it, it brings chills down my spine, with the dad who is too hard on his kid, the crying after the last game. I think they did a very good job with Friday Night Lights

Probably more Stones fault than Pacinos, but other than the inches speech he really wasn't a football coach. All the guy did was get drunk, fight with the owner, and bang a hooker. During a playoff run no less. I was like "does this guy ever study film??"

Save the dramas for something that I'll tough through with the wife in hopes of getting a hummer as a reward. A little guy on the field? I'd have preferred a "welcome to football, bitch" moment where he gets destroyed nstead of the happy ending.

One of the all time worst movies on the planet ...

Panned by anyone every actually playing in the NFL , with some of the worst performances ever on film. Not that I love Golic but it is also the only movie Mike Golic has ever walked out of.

I've seen so many interviews with NFL players from when that movie came out just destroying 99% of the crap from the film's plot.

From how they portray the way medical stuff is handled to contracts to L.T. overacting and top it all off with the fact it's a Oliver Stone turd , that he even puts himself in his own film as the announcer and tries to act like Howard Cosell it's just a bad movie period.

Glad to see Friday Night Lights (tv) getting some love. Fantastic series. Not sure how many people have DirecTV, but the fifth and final season is airing right now on the DirecTV 101 channel. I believe it gets re-aired on NBC in like 6 months or something.

I won't spoil it, but the season is great. Sad to see it come to an end.

So you'd like to watch a movie about a coach studying game film? I mean, I get your point, but it's still a movie. Nobody wants to see that. And if you don't think stuff like that (the drinking, fighting with ownership, etc) doesn't happen behind the scenes no matter what the time of the season, I think you're crazy.

Hey that happened to a guy I know in a little village in Mexico, He was very drunk and fell walking a trail, hit his head on a rock and his eye popped out and he was also knocked out. Well a village pig (they roam free there) happened by and spotted the tasty morsel and gobbled the lose eye up without a moments hesitation.

North Dallas Forty
The Program
Friday Night Lights
The Longest Yard (original, not the **** remake)
The Replacements

Rudy sucked, and that guy is about as hated at Notre Dame as you can get. Any Given Sunday was just "meh." Not a fan. Enjoyed The Replacements far more.

Jerry Maguire... I believe there was a famous line that came out of that movie that many quoted but I can't place it. Another movie I've been wanting to watch for years.

Not doubting you at all but can you elaborate or explain that? I recall... for some reason Montana is jumping out at me... but some QB mentioning this season that nobody was rooting for the guy as the movie portrays but I guess I've never heard that anyone hated him.

Not sure... but that's not clicking. I just checked and it's on the Netflix instant watch so I'm gonna watch it later if I can finish this last second cramming session.

A month of material and I have 5 hours to learn it? I can fit in a movie as well, surely.:approve:

How in the hell did I miss Friday Night Lights??? I read the book back when I was in HS (before the TV show or movie). I grew up 4 hours away from there in a **** town similar to Odessa. Wow, I had no idea it was a movie. OK, that just went to the top of my net flix queue. In other news, WE LANDED ON THE MOON!!!!!!!!!!

Montana was on Dan Patrick relatively recently and they discussed this. I believe Montana said that the whole "players dropping off their jerseys to quit the team" scene was completely made up. So over the top I guess, but I don't recall him saying they hated Rudy.

...the only difference is that Rudy actually got a sack and his helmet stayed on

I guess I'm not sure what you're referring to? The chanting...because that might not have happened, but Ruettiger was put into the game by Devine and got a sack against Georgia Tech and then was carried off the field...

Exactly..and supposedly the last to be carried off the field at ND. Amazing story. Either way a 5 foot-nothing dirt poor kid got and education and was a part of the ND football team. It's an amazing accomplishment that most people don't come close to acheiving with the work and dedication.

The chanting and jersey throwing didn't happen. That was confirmed by many sources, Rudy himself. And the shoulder carrying off the field was done as a joke. This was confirmed by several players that were on the team at the time. I won't get into the genuineness of the sack because that is all speculation.

Ok, so they took liberties, as Hollywood does with everything...

Devine sitting in his office staring at a depth chart would have made for a boring scene.

if you also watch the video above, it wasn't like they threw a 65 yard flea flicker to score a TD...they punched it in from 2 yards out

Wow... finally got around to Jerry Maguire. I haven't finished it yet and it feels longer than some miniseries I've seen. It just keeps going on and on but I have an issue in that I can't stop a movie without finishing it. There's 800x more sap than compelling movie...

The Junction Boys

I think this list shows how mediocre most football movies are. Come to think of it, a lot of sports movies are bad in general. The one exception here is boxing (and even then, there are some real turkeys). I'm guessing this is because in a boxing movie, you can focus more on the development of interesting characters, rather than rehash a tired story.

There are some decent baseball movies, though it's not a sport I really enjoy all that much. I really like these:
Bull Durham
Field of Dreams
Bad News Bears (I prefer the original)
Brewster's Millions (he's a minor league player, though not sure if it's really a baseball movie per se)
Eight Men Out
Fever Pitch (is okay, the original about a being an English football fan of Arsenal is actually better, but you have to like soccer).
For Love of the Game (okay but as far costner, I like his other ones better)
Major League (is okay, not great, but fun to watch at least the first one).
A League of Their own (There's no crying in baseball is classic)
The Natural
Pride of the Yankees (much older, but a fantastic film, Gary Cooper is fabulous)
The Sandlot (is a decent kids film)
But of course there are a lot of really bad ones too...

Any Given Sunday is on HBO right now. This is the first time I've seen this movie since... well, the first time I've seen it.

Yeah, not the best football movie ever. Parts of it is kind of corny. Seems like it's for the MTV generation.
