View Full Version : Ten years of the Orange Mane

Taco John

It's hard for me to believe that we've finally reached 10 full years of existence. This site started as an idea for a college project. I was in a media communications class, and my term project was to develop a business plan and operations strategy for a media organization. It was a no brainer to me: I put together an idea for an online center for Broncos news and discussion. I got an A.

I graduated, moved to Vancouver, WA to marry my then fiance', and pretty much gave up my dream to work in the Broncos marketing department. But the itch never left me, and after a couple of false starts, I created the Orange Mane as an online blog where I could flex my photoshop abilities, and give my takes on things. People dug it, and I launched the forum on draft day 2001. It went viral and was immediately the most busy draft day message board on the internet beating every other discussion outlet for day of draft discussion. Garcia Bronco, and Watermock were instrumental at the time in keeping the conversation going. Then the Denver Broncos fumbled with their message board forum switching to a horrible system that drove it to near extinction (at the time). We benefitted. Then the RMN forum screwed their community with some terrible decisions. We benefitted. And then the Denver Post followed suit and messed up the community that they had. I could not understand how it was that all these sites were so negligent of their communities. They all had very rich cultures. They just didn't seem to understand them and made decisions that damaged them. They've all since tried to re-engage and provide a community platform, and the Broncos eventually launched "Broncos Country," which is a fine effort on their part to be proud of.

In any case, here we are ten years later still going strong. Yeah, we've got our problems. There are issues that need to be worked out. But all in all, I'm very proud of what we've built here and look forward to the next ten years!

Here's the Internet Archive to show you where we've come up from:

Big time Congratz T.J.

I thank you for your effort here and creating the one stop spot for Broncos fans info and general conversation... It's to the point if I just have a question on a subject I can't dig up info on the net about I ask here before anywhere else because I know someone here will know and take the time to help.

I have always respected the hell out of the effort it takes , and your demeanor while dealing with it / us.

Honestly, Burger Bill got better when he went to ESPN, too - although that's not saying much.

I never got the sense that Burger Bill wanted to be here. You'd hear stories about him not even watching training camp. Then, you would read his columns, and you'd say, "Wow, that guy really isn't watching!" He just sucked while he was here. At ESPN, he is slightly better.

I always liked Schefter, even when he was here. I thought the restaurant thing was ridiculous, of course - if nothing else, it's amazingly pretentious to assume that just because people like the subject you write about (the Broncos), they will give a rat's ass about any other opinion you have. But he always had good scoops on the Broncos. And let's face it, he was here during some golden years for Bronco fans.

I remember when I first came here. It seemed like everyone was bashing Mock and the speed of the posts were alot faster. You had to be on your toes if you wanted to reply to someone because someone else would usually post what you wanted to say before you. Which is nice because you can stay out 100+ post arguements.

Wow... As I think about it, I actually could write a book about this place that would be pretty damned interesting (at least to us). The ebbs and flows that this site has seen over time have been remarkable. The common denominator over the years: Broncos fans take Broncos football damn seriously. DAMN. SERIOUSLY.

I'd certainly buy it.

I was on some listserve and various BB's back in early 90's but this is the only place that has kept my interest.

It could have been and not sure how i found it probably Yahoo! before Google. A topic would start and then the responses would be below it with the RE: . It could be one long as thread and seemed it was one of the busier Broncos' forums then all of a sudden the owner sold his golf site and the forum part for the Broncos left with it.

We'll probably have "moved on" to a new "Antichrist" by then.... and if he's not already retired, Cutler will be nearing retirement age. So unless he "pulls a Favre" (with the annual "will-he-or-won't he retire this year") it seems unlikely that he'll still be newsworthy or interesting.

TJ probably doesn't get enough thanks for this...afterall, if it wasn't for him, many of the epic OMW tailgates over the years wouldn't have had people from literally all over the world attending them.

That was the first message board that I was a part of. Broncosweb or something like that. That was back in like '99. If I'm remembering right, I was on it for a year, then it went away, and I ended up on the message board on the Broncos site. Some major issue happened with that board, and the OM and Cyber High were created. I posted on both boards, but Cyber High died out after a good 4 or 5 year run. It never grew like the OM did.
