The GOP’s short honeymoon

Republicans have now been in control of the House for less than two weeks, but the survey suggests an abbreviated honeymoon for the GOP.

Just 25 percent say that the Republicans in Congress will bring "the right kind of change" to the country. That’s compared with 42 percent who said that after Democrats took over the House in 2007, and 37 percent who said that after Republicans gained control in 1995.

In addition, a majority (55 percent) believe congressional Republicans will be too inflexible in dealing with President Obama, while an equal number (55 percent) say Obama will strike the right balance.

On House Republicans’ goal to repeal Obama’s health care law — an effort that cleared the chamber on Wednesday — 45 percent support eliminating the law and 46 percent oppose the GOP effort.

And attitudes about the Republican Party have declined, with 34 percent viewing the GOP positively and 40 percent negatively — down from its 38-37 percent favorable/unfavorable rating last month.

By comparison, the Democratic Party’s fav/unfav in the current poll is 39-35 percent, up from its 37-41 percents score from last month.

"I think this has been a pretty short Republican honeymoon," McInturff says.

Doing the right thing and cutting costs will be widely unpopular otherwise it would have been done already.

There is only one popularity contest that matters and the republicans won it in a land slide.

Could it be that the wheels needed a bit of grease. Just give some cashola to those hypocrit repukes and they'll mold the laws accordingly.

I wish they wouldn't print stories like this. They're going to make Boehner cry.

Funny the polls I read tell the opposite. Never saw that coming.

The days of either party getting high approval is over until the economy picks up. But to suggest repubs in some sort of control is sort of misleading. Dems still control 2/3 of the power in DC. It's still up to Obama and the Democrats to run things. Repubs just have a bigger say now in one area of the govt.

Also the house repubs ran on a platform that had repeal of healthcare on the agenda. They had to follow through even though there in no way to repeal it. They don't control the Senate so it is all moot. Dems in the Senate wont let any legislation the dont like through and Obama can just veto anything else.

Someone please explain to me how repubs have the power to legislate anything without tons of dem support?

Seriously, it's like having a discussion with a child. Simply google Repeal Obamacare polls. They ALL show majority in favor.

"Of those three polls, CNN shows respondents favoring repeal by a tally of 50 to 42 percent, Quinnipiac shows respondents favoring repeal by a tally of 48 to 43 percent (and 54 to 37 percent among independents), and Gallup shows respondents favoring repeal by a tally of 46 to 40 percent. The one poll that does screen for likely voters, Rasmussen, shows respondents favoring repeal by a tally of 55 to 40 percent. That’s 4-for-4 (a good day at the plate), and an average tally of 50 to 41 percent in favor of repeal."

This was just one site. There were pages - take your pick. Or put your head in the sand and believe what you want. Fool.

Back in September, 61% wanted repeal. As more of the individual provisions kick in, I imagine that number will drop some more. Anyway, the GOP leadership already realizes it's a losing proposition. They made their little dog and pony show and have already moved on to other issues. Only idiots like Bachmann are still beating the drum.

Not really because they rammed home the stuff they wanted. Repeal of gays in military, healthcare. Had repubs any real power no way they let healthcare through.

exactly. When re-election comes up they can say i did all i could to repeal healthcare, but the dems had the senate and Obama we couldn't get it done. That will save them with the tea party that voted them in.

They never really seriously thought they could repeal.

The best bet is still for the mandate you buy insurance to be ruled unconstitutional. That happens and the hidden tax is gone and so is the CBO analysis.

Whole new ballgame possible after 2012. Lose the WH and the Senate and this thing can be gone in an instant or take on a complete new form.
