View Full Version : OT: Public Service Announcement - Use different screennames

That One Guy

Just figured I'd throw this out for folks out there in internet land. Use generic screennames and change them between sites. I used to use a single one and have since changed and use about a half dozen - again, all generic. You can never guarrantee your privacy on the internet but you'd be amazed at how much information a person can compile based on just a few details dropped in a few different places on the internet.

Scattered details helped us locate Mock when the PB incident happened and if anyone caught the disappearing gym trick from Tsiguy, it can really become an issue. There's also been things I've read over the years of employers taking your screenname (often in the form of your email address) and posting it into a search engine to see what kinds of things you're doing online. Just good practice for everyone's well being to cover your tracks and keep in mind the few details you scatter around can be leaving a trail.

it also goes without saying to use a different password for each site. especially if you use the same screen name. i've seen cases in the past where somebody's account gets compromised on one site, and then mischievous people (members or admins) use that info to cause trouble on other sites by posting under the compromised account. not all forum software is as secure with passwords as vbulletin... on some sites, the admins/mods can see your password with your account info.

Tsiguy was being a prick in some thread about a gym and some people started making fun of him so he deleted the thread, remade it, TheRev delivered a blow, so he deleted again.

Basically.... You're screwed.

Unless you put a lot of work into "hiding" yourself - You will be found.

I fought that war for a little while and realized that I have to have a "public" face, and a private face.

I use the same screen name everywhere and am too lazy to change them. I do have a different one on the espn boards but it is still jhns20 or jhns22, don't remember now.

If you guys want my life story, no need to search, I will just give it to you. If you are looking for information for credit fraud or something, I hate you and you can go f yourself. I don't think I have ever given info that would help with fraud anyways. Then again, I don't know what information you would need so maybe I have.

ive seen this too, the admin would take the users emails and passwords to paypal. as you can imagine, a LOT LOT of issues came of that.

your life story is not that hard to figure out. just reading your posts here, i already know that:

a) you're 14 years old
b) you have a massive crush on Jay Cutler
c) Josh McDaniels ran over your cat

I was shocked to find on White pages they have info on where I live and who lives with me and who lived with me in the past. I know it is connected with the address but some of the people they had living with me in the past hadn't lived at the current address. And I have an unlisted number.

A little off topic but several years ago I had a guy refuse to pay a bill he owed me. I guess he didn't realize I had his name, home address and phone number. I still enjoy going to trade shows and signing him up for every free promotion possible (siding, roofing, vacuum cleaners and water purifiers). I always make a note to only call early in the morning or late in the evening and if you can't get me at home please call my work number.

Excellent website. I use other online tools similar to this. My stuff is on stealth but anybody who has hands on a keyboard can be found.

I use an 800# with call screening and call forwarding for all my calls. Skype is pretty good for this as well. This eliminates a lot of sales calls from nowhere. If people want to reach me they have to use email.

Anything that is given to you can be taken from you. The only things that belong to you are the things you have to fight for including our own freedoms.

The reason I've played with this in the past is sometimes I just get curious about a person and go clicking around to see what I find about a person. You'd be amazed at how many people's personal info comes up if you do something like facebook.com/[Username] or, in the older days, profiles.yahoo.com/[Username] and you instantly have that gap bridged between online persona and real life.

AT THIS VERY MINUTE, Keith Olbermann is reporting that Facebook is offering to sell all our information to these data collection corporations, so it is a good time to post some counter-measures to keep your info private:

Establish a P.O. Box, and try to never use your home address and correct name together, except with friends and family. Never "Register this Product." Those cards are for data collection only, warrantys are valid without them. This one is tough, but important: Do NOT register to vote! Voter rolls are public by law, and they are one of their best sources of info. Another of their best sources is real property records, also public by law. I think the best way to shield your info here is to establish a trust, and have the trust buy and own the property. I don't know all the rules, but I know the contents and terms of a family trust are not public info. Never give out even the last four of your SSN. Pick a random 4 digits and use that. Establish and use a fictitious name - the same fictitious name - for ALL business and online transactions. If you have no intent to defraud, it's legal. Private businesses have no right to know your name ... Amazon.com and The Denver Post can know you as Dick Trickle if you want. Just make sure postal and shipping entities are clear to deliver Dick’s stuff there. *Disclaimer*: False names are NOT okay to use with financial institutions, credit providers or government agencies (especially law enforcement).

These strategies are most effective when you start them at the same time you move. You'll "fall off the grid" as Jason Bourne would say. Think of it as you guarding your information. You’re Ryan Clady and the info is Tim Tebow. Even something simple like filling out a job application can get Tebow sacked.

Using a fictitious name is not as awkward as it sounds, it’s fun sometimes. We used the name ‘Fred Ziffel’ a few years back, and would say to each other ‘what movie did Ziffel get from Netflix today?’ or ‘we should tell old Fred to call up and complain about that.’ :~ohyah!:

Funny story sorta, about The Mane and usernames ...

I have used this username on things since like 1998 and I used to use it to play Links Golf online in like 98-99.

In like 2007 Bronco9798 (a member here) Pm's me here and ask if I used to play Links golf under TDmvp , and he ended up being someone I used to be on a team with for the team ladder rankings. I even remembered his Links username we played so much.

We teamed up all the time so while we played we could talk Broncos.

Also, when you post stuff about vacations, do it after you get back. Telling everyone you and your family are going on a 7 day cruise is just asking for someone to get that info and know that you wont be home or anyone else.
