John Fox was on Denver's Sports Station again today:
• Not ready to name DC, getting closer on that. Will have something to announce soon, everybody will be excited.
• Knows McCoy better than anyone in Bronco Land based on their 7 years together. He’s a good coach familiar with the current offense as well as the west coast offense. That blend is the trend in the league right now. Tried to hire Nunnely to his staff in Carolina, he’s one of the better coaches in the league. Clancy Barone did a good job with the OL last year, moving him back to TE. Was an outstanding coach in Atlanta who Fox coached against.
• Would like to have that franchise QB, there aren’t many and they’re hard to find. As a coach, have to take the talent you have and putting them in the best positions to use their abilities – developing your gameplan around them. If you don’t want to put the game in your QBs hands for ¾ of the plays then you look in other ways. In Carolina averaged, 10 wins without an elite QB – not a slam on Jake Delhomme but those are just the facts.
• Doesn’t think this defense is a lost cause. Talked about jumping Carolina’s defense from 31st to 2nd when he took that job only adding two guys – Julius Peppers and Will Witherspoon. Not starting from scratch, but have work to do.
• Right now, hoping to finish the staff and go to the Senior Bowl to get to know the scouts and personnel department while evaluating the talent. Will come back the 26th and begin evaluating current personnel.
• Took bits and pieces from everywhere he coached –sometimes ownership, personnel, coaches and players. Chuck Knoll had a real impact on him.
• During interview process, didn’t have a lot of tape but some film during the stretch especially the Houston game. Way he brought the team back, showing those intangibles was really something. Obviously he’s young and has a lot of room to grow but he’ll be ready to work.
• Doesn’t want to get into competition between the QBs, has respect for all three. Too early to say other than he feels good about all three.
• Wasn’t hard to be sold on the Broncos, always admired from a far. John Elway will infuse energy to the fanbase. Game is only fun when you win – excited because it’s a football town. One of the best cities in the NFL.
