View Full Version : OT: Prayers/thoughts for Arizona

Miss I.

Today in Tucson, Arizona 6 people were shot and killed and 12 others injured in the Safeway shopping center at Oracle and Ina Road. From a personal perspective that is 2 miles from my parent's home and in the Northwest side of Tucson. Amongst the 6 killed was a 9 year old little girl. Amongst the 12 injured is Gabrielle Gifford, AZ Representative who they believe will recover but is currently in ICU at UMC. The shooter is in custody.

I am from AZ, specifically from that area. When I saw the stories getting posted on Facebook, I immediately called my parents. They shop at that grocery store, they live in that area and I didn't know much at that point. Thankfully they are fine, though they told me that law enforcement plans to keep that whole area shut down for the next several days.

I do not understand the evil that people do. This is senseless tragedy and I am praying for all the families and people impacted.

A link to the President's address about this is provided: http://www.kvoa.com/news/video-president-obama-s-speech-on-giffords-shooting/ and you can find other detailed links there as well.

Really sorry to hear this news.

It is horrific. They are in my prayers.

I have no strong views on the gun control issue (this person was clearly mentally ill), but I'll leave that for another thread.

It really sounds like this guy is mentally ill. It also sounds like there was at least one guy there with a gun who took a shot at the shooter.

Perhaps Sarah Palin will be more careful when using gun sights when making facebook plans for democrats she wants to remove from office. As this woman was on that list. For the record i am not a democrat.

Thoughts and prayers with those who were lost today.

The shooter was identified as: Jared Laughner.

As for turning this into a political debate, please don't. The person acutally responsible for the death of a 9 year old child and 5 others and injuring 12 is in custody. Just have positive thoughts for the people left behind and the community gutted by a senseless tragedy.

On her website, she put a target site over this particular politician. This particular politician was shot at in a grocery store, along with several others.

All I've seen is a map with that district having a bullseye on it (among others). You got a link to one with her photo?

Also, will you be condemning Kos too? She was on his list of Dems who were not sufficiently leftwing for his taste and he said they should put a bullseye on those districts.

Except the shooter was a far left liberal according to one of his good friends/classmate from 2007. Doubt he paid much attention to Palin trying to remove health care voters from office.

People are reading way to ****ing much into the "target" ****. It's no different than some dots marking a location.

I started it because I am from Tucson you jackass. My parents live about 2 miles away from where it happend. I very specifically started the thread just to say hey could you pray for a community that is going through something. People can start whatever threads they want. If you want to start a thread about something you want then do it. This particular time it just happened to be news about a place I am from and that's all it was about. Yes, my guess is ths guy targeted the politician for whatever reason psychos do that, but I just wanted to recognize a community that is grieving right now and ask for some good thoughts. Is that really really too much to ask for?

what rhetoric? this kid was not a Palin supporter or a Tea Party activist or even ex-military.

it's disgusting that the leftwing blogoshpere within MINUTES was trying to tie this act to the political right. it's disgusting that the Palin haters out there are trying desperately to link her to this.

the kid was not fit in the head. he has a myspace page and a youtube channel. his interests have a decidely leftward slant (he lists the communist manifesto and mein kampf as favorite books).

but i'm not blaming the Daily Kos or Huffington Post or Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi or Democratic Underground for what this kid did. this kid bears responsibility. he killed people today for no other reason than that they had the misfortune of being at the same place as him, including a child.

yes my parents are okay, my uncle is okay, the tons of friends I know who still live in the area are shaken, but not hurt. And all they are showing on the news there naturally is this and as my parents told me, they are shutting down the surrounding area for sometime and the FBI is involved too I hear. It's so weird to hear about my hometown in the news being this far away. It's surreal and sad and it makes me realize there are no safe places, not where I am now, not home, not anywhere.

STOP! PLEASE STOP! If I had known this weirdness would happen I never would have posted. I am sad because people are dead and injured. My hometown, which as any big city does, has seen its share of violence (plenty of car theft and normal murders to go around) is just completely aflood with something none of us understand. yes he was crazy, yes these things have happened, but right now it isn't to answer why, but just to pray that people will sort it out and survive, to hope for those left behind things will be okay for them. I am really sad and I didn't expect this to bother me so much, but it does. If I focus on sending prayers or thoughts that way it feels constructive, better. Maybe it's useless I don't know, but its all I can control, these thoughts, being positive, it's all I can do because I can't fix it.

This is America. Our media is always looking for someone to blame, and the sheep hop right in line when they throw crap against the wall.

Its just a shame that the left-wing zealotry is so out of hand that they attempt to use whatever tragedy they can to tie it to the people that they hate on the right. Maybe one day the people who embibe that tripe will finaly stand up and say they'd rather hear them report the truth rather than a bunch of hatred-fuel for their own fellow citizens.

Peace to the families involved.

There had been "difficulties" at Pima Community College where Loughner attended, Dupnik said. One student, who had a poetry class with Loughner, said he would often act "wildly inappropriate."
"One day he started making comments about terrorism and laughing about killing the baby," classmate Don Coorough told ABC News, referring to a discussion about abortions. "The rest of us were looking at him in shock… I thought this young man was troubled."
Another classmate, Lydian Ali, recalled the incident as well.
"A girl had written a poem about an abortion. It was very emotional and she was teary eyed and he said something about strapping a bomb to the fetus and making a baby bomber," Ali told ABC News.

Well the reason is to interview him and find out of he acted alone. Then after that its to try and figure out what made him tick, what made him crazy. Then maybe we learn something and can prevent or try and prevent these things in the future.

Nothing can be learned from just executing people before we go through due process. Not even people like this.

I'm so sorry for you and your people in Tuscon, Miss I. Just got off the phone with my folks in Sun City West and they are really upset about this. I remember when Columbine went down, how gut punched and free falling I felt. I'm a combat vet who lost platoon members during Gulf I, and have lost several others to the engagements of the last 10 years. Honestly, though...nothing has ever hit me like Columbine did. I dated a girl who went there in high school and had been in those halls. My best friend from high school had two kids attending there at the time. I couldn't believe it could happen at that place. So sad to see what we as a species are becoming. Glad I don't have kids. I don't know how you do it right for those of you that do. Again, Miss I. My thoughts and prayers go out to you, your's, and the families of all impacted by this tonight. There are a whole bunch of them being said for you all.

Let's not head down the wrong path here again. I'll just clarify my comment by stating "our society" as in our country and leave it at that. Trust me, I've seen enough laps around the sun and of the rest of the world to understand the nature of man. I've also personally dealt in the violence you speak of: both as one who has been on the receiving end and the dealing end of said violence. The hope would be that someday somehow we will elevate ourselves above it, I don't have much hope that we will. Again, that is a conversation for another place and time.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/us-politics/8248728/Gabrielle-Giffords-shooting-Police-searching-for-second-suspect-in-Arizona-gun-rampage.html

The police are looking for a 2nd shooter, has not been identified. From the witnesses on scene, the congresswoman clearly was the target as the shooter went straight at her and shot her in the head. She's survived the surgery and recognized her husband when he came so they are taking that as a hopeful sign. The more I read, the more I realize she was targeted to some degree because she's a public figure, but I still think these psychos did it for the same attention seeking mental issues that John Hinckley and Mark David Chapman did. It all just makes me so sad.
