View Full Version : OT: Get your flu shot this year Maners! It's a rough one

No sooner do I get back to work do I get hit with the worst flu I've had in memory. Joint and muscle ache, swollen sinuses, fever, headache, occasional nausea are all here.

I only mention this because it's the first year in the past three that I declined to get the flu shot (on account of me always getting a minor cold in spite of the shot). This seems like a particularly virulent strain.

I went through a drive-thru flu shot at the hospital, just stick your arm out the widow it was cool.

That's sort of like driving through New Jersey only they give you herpes.

You've never been inoculated by a widow on the Jersey turnpike?

I've never had a flu shot and never had the flu. I work outside for a living in 100 degrees during the summer and subzero temps during the winter. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones.

You can't get the flu from a flu shot.

I never said that. But, I know hundreds of people (including myself about 7 years ago) who have gotten immediately sick after getting a flu shot and that alone is enough reason for me to never get one.

I don't get the flu shot either. But I did finally break down and get the pneumonia shot last year as I'm more prone to that than the actual flu. Been a great year so far.

They only guess what strain will be the one to innoculate against. I heard last yr they got it wrong. I have never gotten a flu shot. Getting the flu part of life when it happens i will deal with it. Flu shot? I don't need no stinkin flu shot.

Now maybe when I am ancient old like in 60's i will do it.

Well you can catch the flu after a shot. Not from the shot but still it can happen. Also many many strains of flu you get innoculated against what the cdc predicts will be the prevalent strain. Its no exact science.

The flu shot that you received was basically pieces of the virus. Like if they put it in a tiny blender and shredded it.

The whole point is to prime your immune system so that its not surprised when it sees it down the road.

Good thread, Chris.

Got mine earlier this season at work.

Just heard from folks back in St. Louis... my family had a Xmas party and something like 13 out of the 20 people came away with the flu, and most are still recovering.

Flu symptoms for a day or so is a possibility with the shot. I always feel a little odd after getting it. But, it definitely doesn't cause it, as I think you're saying you're aware.

That's exactly what the flu shot is. It gives you the flu so you don't catch it later.

There's that whole swine flu thing that kills children and the elderly. And yes, influenza A strains are still out there. The flu is dangerous for many people.

Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter if it works either. They're getting paid and you feel better even if it's a saline placebo.

A saline placebo doesnt introduce your immune cells to the proteins on the virus.

I've never once had a flu shot in my entire life(and have never had the flu), But I was forced to get one this year since I'm in the military. I think its kinda pointless, but I'm paid to just shut up and color now, so bring on the shots.

Keeping blood levels of 25(OH)d3 Vitamin D3 between 60 -80ng/ml is significantly more effective than flu shots at preventing the flu... And without the risk of side effects.

If only there was a vaccine for distracted drivers of automobiles. 50k otherwise healthy people in the US die each year in car accidents. 10 times as many are injured. Almost every single collision is anything but an accident, and the root cause is human inattention or neglect. Just imagine if a super virus came along with those mortality / morbidity numbers with otherwise healthy people. It would be mass hysteria. But hey, get your flu shot while you are driving your friggin car, talking on your cell phone, putting on lipstick, jamming to Fergie, and eating a burrito. Makes perfect sense.

Ha! I got hit just the other day by an illegal immigrant who had a two year old running around in her van unimpeded. With that kind of distraction, its shocking that she "didnt see me". I was extremely lucky...she actually had insurance.

To the OP, it's basically useless to get the flu shot now considering it takes 2-4 weeks to take effect. We're basically at that point where it's too late in the season.

100's of people? Personally?

Sometimes your body will react to the virus (that's what getting sick really is, your body reacting to the virus) like a mild flu, but the virus is done.

Every year I get one, I don't get sick, and the years I skip in usually get hit pretty hard.

As someone that lived through SARS in Hong Kong 8 years ago I can say that "hysteria" does help people become more cautious and consequently reduces the chance of a virus spreading even if you yourself never come into contact with it.

So let's lets get this straight, we should just round up all the old people in nursing homes and at VA hospitals with weak immune systems and shoot them right between the eyes or better yet, hit them in the head with a hammer and save the ammo.
