View Full Version : Who do you want as our new GM?

The hot suggestion this week seems to be that we need an experienced GM with more power to compliment Mcdaniels. Let's say that GM isn't Elway... I suspect most of us don't know which former and current GMs would be available. There's also the potential for poaching top scouting directors from other teams (I've heard rumblings from people that want us to get the guy that's been in charge of the Ravens scouting for the past 10 years).

Who would you make the GM of the Denver Broncos starting January 2011?

Eric DeCosta.

Someone from a winning program. Not a friggin' cap specialist.

Exactly. Give me an NFL guy off a perpetual contender like Pittsburgh, Indy or New England...someone who knows the scouting system inside and out and also has a sharp busines mind, and obviously someone who can assume a significant portion of that responsibility from the HC.

But consider...even if McD goes, there's no guarantee that Xanders does also...or Ellis either.

If we're considering ex-Broncos...Karl Mecklenburgh? Smart guy...did he ever become a doctor? He and Rod Smith would both be interesting choices for working in this FO if they were interested.

Bill Parcels wouldnt work with an inplace Head Coach so i'll go ahead and pick Charley Casserly. Obviously he did well with the skins, and time as proven that with the exception of his first draft with Texans, his drafting there was at least decent for a Perennial 1-2-3 pick overall team.

Reese, the former Titans GM. Good at drafting talent...

Puke all over Casserly. I wouldn't mind Reese. I'd throw an interview to Lombardi. I think Heckert from the Eagles is only under contract for the rest of this season. If so, I'd take a look at him too.

How about Mike Mayock just to throw a name out there?

Lombardi is very good on TV and writing...not so much in the front office though.

Mayock will never leave the golden goose of the NFL network unless he was vastly overpaid.

Reese speaks highly of McD, I'd like to see it happen.

Already has a cush job working for the real Patriots. No chance he leaves that behind to come out here and hold someone's hand.

Elway just said on the radio he does not have the experience to be the #1 guy i.e. the GM. He'd be open to being in the quorum of ppl who have input and would be willing to work for the Broncos

He went on for a while about the Art and Science of the personel side.

I think Josh lost a valuable person in the elder Goodman who had that experience

I think we need an older more experienced GM like a Reese or Peterson

Anyone from the Pitts or Ravens organization would be fine with me

He's the GM in Cleveland. Holmgren is "president".

Goodman left because the younger Goodman was told his services were not needed. The younger Goodman and current GM were butting heads....

Sure, but the chances of this rapidly approach zero. Which is why you target DeCosta instead.

I know it was a giant clusterf*** from the get go of Pat telling everyone on Jan 2 Goodman is our GM to Goodman interviewing Josh , to Pat then going with Xanders after the fact, to firing the scouts a month before the draft

Xanders and Jeff Goodmand had been here for at least a year and a half.
Upset the apple cart after the draft not before.

Compare that to KC who hired a GM then a coach and who also fired the scouting dept after the draft. Duh this was done all the time.

This all comes back to Bowlen and Ellis. I don't blame Josh 100 %. He was given the keys to the kingdom and like a young kid crashed his dad's Ferrari

Xanders and Young Goodman couldn't coexist....

My point was they coexisted for a year and a half. They could co exists for another 3 months until after the draft. To have our senior draft person leave 6 weeks before the draft was not smart on mgmts part.

Having grown up in the same neighborhood that Meck lives in, I will say that Karl is too much of a family guy at this point to want the job. I still see him occasionally at some of the southwest-Littleton restaurants when I'm visiting my parents.

That said... bring in a high-profile guy already. Gruden, Parcells, Shottemheimer.

I like Parcells actually because he runs the same offensive system as McD.

Rather than throw out ridiculous names with know knowledge of their abilities outside of circumstantial evidence, I'm going to list attributes I'd like to see.

Someone with experience as a college scout.
Someone who learned under a system that is good at drafting and evaluating talent.
Someone with at least a year of experience in a pro-scouting department as well.
Someone who played football. Former players, even just at the college level, make better personnel men.
No former Broncos. Largely because there aren't any who are qualified. And a shout out to my man John for saying as much so his worshipers can quit pretending he would be a good GM "becuz OMG h3 1$ teh JON 3L\/\/@Y1!1!!!! h3 C@l\l doo aN77hInGGG!1!!1!111one!"

Exactly, perfect, on the nose. Can't really blame Josh ... like the hard-charging kid he is, he brashly assumed whatever authority/responsibility he could. I've been saying this since Day 1 (sorry but I have): It was "the grownups" responsibility to draw boundaries, to delegate responsibility. Bowlen really f'd up, and now Josh might have to pay.

This all comes back to Bowlen and Ellis.

I don't see why everybody freaking says this?! Ellis doesn't make these decisions.

He's probably doing more than he wants to do, based on Pat's "absences."
