Sad story. Gaffney must feel like crap:

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley had a gambling problem and was deep in debt when he committed suicide on Sept. 21, friends and family told authorities during a probe into his death.

McKinley committed suicide with a gun he had purchased months before from teammate Jabar Gaffney, who told investigators McKinley wanted the weapon for his own protection, according to an investigative report by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department that was obtained by The Associated Press. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said there was nothing inappropriate about the sale of the gun.

Detectives also determined that McKinley had spoken about suicide with at least three of his friends, including former Broncos backup quarterback Tom Brandstater. Brandstater told investigators he had lent McKinley $65,000 and that McKinley owed $40,000 in casino markers in Las Vegas.

Yes it is sad, but very selfish too. He was worried about how to get money to raise his kid, so he completely bails on him... Cowardly thing to do.

You should keep rolling around in your computer chair and hand out more judgments on people suffering from significant depression. To call what he did "cowardly" shows how ignorant you are. I've got a judgment to throw out. You're a sick person.

Bite me, he had a kid and killed himself because he was in debt, or whatever reason, that is selfish. he could have gotten help if he wanted it, but took the "easy way out".

Oh, I didn't know you knew him personally and knew all the issues surrounding him, or knew what it felt like to be surrounded by crippling debt and probably some form of genetic depressive disorder as well. I guess you do know that yet you're still a dick.

Nice, I'm a dick for expressing my opinion. back at ya dick.

Anyways, enough, he did what he did for his own reasons.

Wow, reading all the coverage on this, Brandstater really was a good friend to him. It's not like he had that kind of money to give. Major props to him for stepping up, I can only imagine he must be devastated.

I'm guessing Kenny was full of despair. That's different from selfish.

Just reading that makes me cringe and can't fathom what he was going through internally in those final days.

I feel bad for his kid, his friends and his family. And I'm sure Gaffney is feeling awful even though he didn't do anything wrong.

We get mad/upset w/ the team's performance and sometimes I lose sight of what's more important.

This part disturbs me. Apparently the team was aware of his problem:

McKinley borrowed $65,000 from former teammate Tom Brandstater, a fact which the Broncos were surprisingly aware of. Harold Chatman, the team’s team’s player development director, was asked by Brandstater’s lawyer to hold on to a contract stating McKinley would repay the loan.

Brandstater, now a free agent, was a close friend that tried to help McKinley quit gambling. Las Vegas casinos sent many letters to McKinley’s parents home, looking for money.

Man.....

The players association set up a fund where people can donate for the future care of his son. http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/09/22/kenny-mckinleys-son-provided-trust-fund-by-nflpa/

Just tragic.

Why do people always say that suicide is an "easy way out"? Anyone whose ever lost someone close to them this way....well if you have then you probably know nothing came easy for them.

Committing suicide is the most selfish thing a person can do..its a permanent solution to a temporary problem. He caused so many more people pain by doing what he did...sad none the less.

I read somewhere that Brandstater basically had to clear out all his accounts to give Kenny the $65k loan.

Is it? I'd say the most selfish thing a person can do is to look at someone so wracked with despair that the only option they see for themselves is to die, and then to tell that person to stick around for your benefit. In the end what control does a man have if he can't say enough's enough?

A human should have this choice, it's personal and we have no right to judge it.

No he was selfish and now we find out he had a gambling addiction to blow his money away that was supposed to be for him and his family. Sad he killed himself yet very selfish too. We give out judgements everyday and even here on the mane. I always thought you were a douche for wanting the Broncos to lose so you can be correct in an argument.

When you bring a child into this world and we know children need their fathers, you need to be there for support, financially and physically/emotionally. He wasnt sticking around for my fandom of the broncos. He needed to stick around for his son.
