View Full Version : Best case scenario: 9-7 record

What are the percentages of a 9-7 team making the playoffs?

When was the last time a 3-7 team made the postseason? How many times has it been done?

LOL

Is this in regards to the obvious mathematical elimination of our bad team from the playoffs, or the fact that someone is still holding out hope?

Only way 9-7 gets you in is by winning the AFCW. Can't imagine we'd hold too many tiebreakers over SD.

Maybe the Broncos season will come down to a botched Dwayne Bowe onside recovery.

That happened right after the boob mojo thread was taken down. There hasn't been any glimmer of hope since then.

Actually, I believe the Jacksonville team that went 9-7 and beat Denver in the '97 playoffs started out 3-7.

Damn!
I'm speechless Ha!

The way it looks right now, you just can't rule SD out of the equation.
KC, I wanted to wait at least to mid-season to better have a feel for them.
I think they're as good as they're playing and in my mind the favorites to win the AFCW.
Oakland can be the spoilers of the bunch. They can mess up everybody's tie-breakers by virtue of beating us or them. They may have a shot at finishing 3rd.

Thr Broncos, that's some huge odds against us making a run like that...

if that were true, then buying a single ticket in the super-mega-duper-lotto-jackpot would have 50/50 odds of winning. it's not true.

forgot it was wrong to hold out hope for a team to turn it around. guess that makes you an idiot homer around here.

yes, they were plays away, but they didnt make it, and ultimately finished the season as good as us: chasing the lombardi, but not getting it.

We did not get to play for the SB last year, we did not qualify for the playoffs. You can't play for the SB unless you win enough games to qualify for the playoffs.

No, but if they somehow went 4-2 down the stretch, and then had the same scenario as last year in 2011 (win 6 to start, 2-8 down the stretch)......Not one of the "homers" would be touting McD as being 10-2 over a 12 game stretch. And nor would a single analyst on ESPiN.

Why? Because it's meaningless to look at records across an off-season.

See what I did there?

Nope. Through ten games, they were 4-6. And then they won their last 5 games of the season to end up 9-7.

LOL

If Bowe had held on to that onside kick, Shanahan would still be coaching the Broncos, Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, and Hillis would be setting offensive records, and all would be great in Broncoland.

If you're really a hardcore optimist, there's a playoff scenario generator here:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/playoffscenario

The problem is that it only calculates the final 4 weeks. You are limited in your options for plugging in variable results for the next two weeks. Your options for those two weeks are limited to things like "all home teams win" or "teams with best winning % win" etc.

But, if you are really determined, you can just plug in "home team" for the wins, the play out the four weeks to your heart's content on the generator, then adjust the final rankings according to your own two week projections.

So, for example, start by setting the default on "all home teams win." That results in KC taking the division with a 9-7 record, while Oakland and SD tie at 8-8 and Denver finishes at 6-10.

Assume that all plays out that way, except that Denver wins road games vs. Kansas City, Oakland and Arizona (to get to the 9-7 mark).

That would drop the Raiders to 7-9. It would drop the Chiefs to 8-8 and the Chargers would stay at 8-8. Denver would win the division.

Now change that slightly. Assume the Chargers win their road game at Cincy (where they should be heavily favored). That would get them to 9-7, along with Denver, but under this scenario Denver would still win the division due to a better divisional record. (4-2 vs. 3-3)

So it isn't impossible, except for the one minor problem of Denver going 6-0.

Pick Six

If I actually thought Denver had a chance, I would have to reluctantly cheer for Peyton Manning against the Chargers. Since we don't have a chance, I could forget about doing that. I really don't care who comes out of that game the victor. Either way, I won't like it...:thumbsdow
